Validation of the Freund Clock Drawing Test to Screen for Cognitive Dysfunction in Cancer Patients...
Elderly Cancer PatientsCognitive ImpairmentA Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) has become a fundamental aid in the evaluation and treatment planning of older cancer patients. Systematic reviews of trials of geriatric assessments have shown effectiveness when interventions are implemented. Although CGA is a fundamental tool in the care of the geriatric patient, the integration and application of this tool in oncologic practice are still in evolution. Cognition is one of the domains examined within a CGA. Studies have noted that up to 25% to 50% of older patients had cognitive abnormalities that warranted further evaluation. Cognitive dysfunctions can influence the ability to weigh the risks and benefits of cancer therapy, to comply with the suggested treatment plan, and to recognize the symptoms of toxicity that need medical attention. Recently, the Freund Clock Drawing Test (CDT) has been proposed as a quick and simple screening tool to assess cognitive dysfunction. A retrospective analysis on 105 cancer patients at the General Hospital Groeninge showed that a cut-off score of ≤ 4 for the CDT has a good AUC, sensitivity and specificity. Aims To validate the Clock Drawing Test as a screening tool to identify elderly cancer patients in need of a more in-depth cognitive evaluation within a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) Further registration of data in a database coupled to the Cancer Registry in the General Hospital Groeninge as set up by the PROGERCAN study
Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) MRI for Cognitive Decline
Mild Cognitive ImpairmentAlzheimer's DiseaseThe purpose of this study is to determine the value of Arterial Spin Labeling (ASL) MRI, a measure of blood flow to the brain, in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and compare it to existing measures. In particular, the investigators will compare ASL MRI to Positron Emission Tomography (PET/CT), which measures brain metabolism reflecting how well cells in a patient's brain are functioning. In addition, the investigators will assess the relationship of these measures to specific protein levels associated with Alzheimer's Disease in the patient's cerebrospinal fluid (the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord) obtained by lumbar puncture. By comparing the information that is available from these procedures to the patient's performance on cognitive tests, the investigators hope to learn which procedures most accurately reflect and assist in determination of the potential causes of cognitive difficulties that arise with MCI, and thus, which are most useful in the clinical setting. In particular, PET scans have been found to be very useful in diagnosis of MCI and Alzheimer's Disease, but the investigators want to find out if they can get the same, or better, information from an ASL MRI scan, which is less expensive and easier to acquire.
A Study of Characterizing Cognitive Decline and Functional Cardiac Senescence in Healthy Korean...
AgingMild Cognitive Impairment1 moreAlthough aging process appears to be generally characterized, investigators have been paid much attention to the specific target molecules, which leads to discover the clinical markers of the senescence. The present study is to investigate the clinical and biological profile of cognitive decline and functional cardiac senescence in healthy middle aged and elderly Korean volunteers. This study was conducted as a cross-sectional, single-center, comparative clinical study. Each volunteer was given informed consent for checking cognition and cardiac function. Blood and urine samples were collected to analyze genome, proteome, and metabolome to assess cognition and cardiac function of its muscle enzymes.
Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative 2
Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)Alzheimer's Disease (AD)3 moreThe purpose of this study is to build upon the information obtained in the original Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI1) and ADNI-GO (Grand Opportunity; a study funded through an NIH grant under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act), to examine how brain imaging technology can be used with other tests to measure the progression of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early Alzheimer's disease (AD). ADNI2 seeks to inform the neuroscience of AD. This information will aid in the early detection of AD, and in measuring the effectiveness of treatments in future clinical trials.
Preoperative Cognitive Screening in Older Spinal Surgical Patients
Cognitive ImpairmentFrail Elderly SyndromeThe objectives of this study are to determine whether identifying patients with baseline cognitive deficits or frailty predict postoperative delirium.
Assessment and Rehabilitation of Cognitive Impairments in Pediatric Survivors of Cancer
NeoplasmsThis research involves assessment of cognitive outcome in childhood cancer as well as evaluation of a cognitive rehabilitation program for improving learning and problem solving difficulties in children with cancer.
System-IGF-1 Pathway and Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's DiseaseMild Cognitive Impairment3 moreThe aim is to assess the relationship between levels of IGF-I system components and cognitive status in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD), in elderly subjects with normal cognitive function, and in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
Neuropsychological Assessment of Cognitive Decline in Patients With a Definite Parkinson's Disease...
Parkinson Disease DementiaCognitive disorders in Parkinson's disease (PD) are not as obvious as cognitive disorders in Alzheimer disease and their diagnosis tends to be delayed. If neuropsychological assessment of cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease is well established, the thresholds of cognitive testing corresponding to a dementia are unknown. Recently, new diagnosis criteria of dementia associated with PD have been proposed by the movement disorder society. In this study two groups of patients with idiopathic PD will be separated and compared according to their Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) score (upper or lower than 26). Included patients will have clinically idiopathic PD, will be over 65 years old and will present cognitive complain. Cognitive and mood disorders as well as motor symptoms will be assessed using validated scales and a neuropsychological assessment dispatched in two visits will be performed . Differences in the distribution of data from the two groups of patients will be assessed in statistically analysis with non parametric tests. The purpose of this study is to determine the most effective tests and their threshold value corresponding to a pathological cognitive decline.
An Observational Study for Analysis of Mortality in Participants Who Participated in Previous 3...
Mild Cognitive ImpairmentThe purpose of the study is to collect data of patients who were randomized (assignment of study medication by chance) and treated in 3 previous studies of galantamine (CR003145, CR002014 and CR005947) for the treatment of mild cognitive impairment (isolated memory impairment). This data were not recorded during the course of these 3 previous studies.
The Impact of Renin-angiotensin System on Brain Activation During Hypoglycaemia in Healthy Men,...
HypoglycemiaCognitive ImpairmentThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the cerebral blood flow in subjects with high and low activity in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS).The renin-angiotensin system is a hormone system which is involved in the regulation of the blood pressure. Earlier studies have shown that high RAS activity is associated with a more pronounced cognitive impairment during hypoglycaemia compared to low RAS activity in both type 1 diabetic patients and healthy volunteers. We intend to examine brain activity by oxygen-15 labelled water-PET scanning during hypoglycaemia in response to cognitive function testing in 20 healthy male volunteers with high and low RAS activity, respectively
