The Use of the VOMS Tool With Military Personnel to Track mTBI Recovery and RTD Status

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

The purpose of the proposed project is to determine if the VOMS is an effective screening tool to identify and track recovery of vestibular and ocular motor impairment and symptoms following mTBI, that corpsman-level medical personnel can successfully implement in combat and non-combat environments. A second purpose of the project is to determine if impairment and symptoms on the VOMS is more pronounced following blast compared to blunt mTBI.

Screening Brain MRI in High School Football: Does the Guardian Cap Reduce the Risk of Traumatic...

Brain ConcussionBrain Injuries5 more

Screening Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with Fluid-attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) and Susceptibility Weighted Imaging (SWI) sequences will be performed pre and post season on high school football players. One set of players will wear the Guardian Cap on their five star rated helmets and the other will wear five star rated helmets only. The investigators will compare outcomes of ImPACT scores and MRI findings between the two groups to see if there is a statistical difference in reduction of injury and to establish what the baseline level of MRI findings related to injury from high school football is as well as what the baseline level of injury is prior to the start of the season.

Brain Development in Young Children Following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury - Pilot Study

TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury)

Concussions (also known as mild traumatic brain injury) are common in young children. In some children, they can lead to short- and long-term difficulties. However, our knowledge of the exact consequences of injuries on young children's brains and behavior is limited. These consequences may be different in children under 6, as their brains are fragile and undergoing significant developmental changes. The aim of this study is to determine the extent to which a concussion sustained before the age of 6 years is associated with changes in young children's brain structure, function and behaviours, using a brain imaging. In this study, the results of a group of 30 children with a concussion will be compared to those of 30 children of the same age with an orthopaedic injury to the upper or lower limbs.

Clinical Characteristics and Pathophysiology of Post-Traumatic Headache

Post-Traumatic HeadacheConcussion1 more

To better understand the clinical characteristics and complex pathophysiological events that constitute persistent post-traumatic headache (PPTH) and to identify possible calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) hypersensitivity in PPTH patients.

The Effect of Hypnotic Suggestion After Acquired Brain Injury or Concussion

Acquired Brain InjuryConcussion1 more

A recent randomized clinical trial (RCT) demonstrated large effects of hypnotic suggestion on working memory following acquired brain injury. However, no studies have investigated long-term effects (> 2 months) effects on return to work (RTW). Therefore the aim is in a RCT to study the effect of hypnotic suggestion on RTW in employed individuals with acquired brain injury or concussion, that were referred to an out-patient municipal vocational rehabilitation center in Denmark. Participants were randomized to a passive (treatment as usual), active comparison (a weekly treatment session of mindfullness-based stress reduction for four weeks) or intervention group (a weekly treatment session of targeted suggestion for four weeks). Intention-to-treat analysis of the hypnosis effect on return to work within six months follow-up will be performed. Results Participants (N=77) have accepted and participated in the study. Effect measures are to be analysed.

Enhanced Screening for Early Treatment Targets After MTBI

Brain Concussion

The study will examine whether enhancing screening-informed follow-up letters will improve (i) family physician compliance with best practice guidelines for managing persistent symptoms following concussion, and (ii) clinical outcomes from concussion.

One-Day Life Skills Workshop for Veterans With TBI, Pain and Psychopathology

Mild Traumatic Brain InjuryDistress-based Psychopathology1 more

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the signature wound of Veterans returning from the recent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan (i.e OIF/OEF/OND), with up to 20 percent experiencing persistent post-concussive symptoms. Among Veterans with mild TBI, the majority also experience significant distress, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as persistent pain. Importantly, significant stigma is associated with seeking mental health care among Veterans; and poor management of multiple conditions results in increased morbidity and mortality, increased risk for suicide, and significantly decreased quality of life. Thus the challenge for treatment providers is to provide a unified and acceptable intervention for Veterans with these interdependent systemic comorbid concerns. The aim of this proposal is to develop, refine, and evaluate a 1-day trans-diagnostic (i.e., applies to more than one diagnosis) "life skills workshop" to help Veterans develop skills needed to pursue valued goals in the face of life's challenges.

Sex and Age Ultrasound Response to Differential Jugular Vein Pressure

ConcussionMild

Clinical trials have suggested that this device is effective in mitigating changes in brain structure and function in athlete populations. The purpose of the current study is to measure the response of the jugular vein to various pressures applied by a generic compression device across various ages and gender. The relative jugular vein response will be measured using ultrasound.

Developing an Implementation Strategy for Post-concussion Communication With Low Health Literacy...

ConcussionBrain

Investigators will conduct a hybrid implementation-effectiveness evaluation of an implementation toolkit that supports communication with families post-concussion in the emergency department. Primary outcomes will be parent self-report of specific concussion management behaviors two weeks post-visit. Investigators will also explore whether successful implementation is associated with (1) improved parent knowledge and self-efficacy related to helping their child adhere to CDC guidelines for returning to daily activities, school and sports, and (2) decreased disparity in knowledge and self-efficacy between high and low health literacy parents.
