Life 2: Improving Fitness and Function in Elders

AgingMobility Limitations

The purpose of this study is to determine whether a 12-month physical activity counseling program, compared to usual care, improves physical performance in a sample of older veterans. The primary physical performance outcome is change in gait speed.

Mobility Impairment in the Northern Region of Malawi

Mobility Limitation

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether Lofstrand or axillary crutches are better suited to treat mobility impairments and improve physical activity levels in rural, resource-limited, settings like the Northern Region of Malawi. To do this, we are proposing the implementation of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to measure and compare the physical activity and satisfaction of mobility aid recipients sorted into two groups - one receiving a set of Lofstrand crutches (Group 1) and the other a set of axillary crutches (Group 2). Changes in physical activity, disability, and life satisfaction levels will measured with a follow-up data collection period conducted one year after the distribution of the devices.

Physical Literacy and Rehabilitation

Chronic ConditionsMultiple2 more

With the aging population, the prevalence of chronic conditions continues to rise, affecting 1/3 of Canadians. The promotion of physical literacy, defined as "the motivation, confidence, physical competence and knowledge, to take responsibility for engagement in physical activity for life", has emerged as a promising strategy to increase movement for children. However, little is known about how physical literacy can impact aging adults. A working definition of physical literacy for adults focusing on mobility, function and self-monitoring provides opportunity to guide public health programs in addressing the rehabilitation needs of persons living with multiple chronic conditions.

Exercise for Adults With Limited Mobility

Mobility LimitationFall

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured and progressive task-oriented, community based exercise program for older adults who have limitations in mobility and examine whether improvements in mobility and quality of life would be seen following completion at 6 months.

The Pitt Retiree Study: A Diabetes Prevention Program for Medicare Eligible Older Adults

ObesityCardiovascular Risk Factor5 more

The Pitt Retiree Study (PRS) disseminates a novel, yet practical, diabetes prevention program among Medicare eligible adults in Western Pennsylvania. This study will provide 4, and 12 month outcome data (with a no treatment follow-up assessment at 24 months) to help determine whether a continued contact group telephone intervention is feasible and effective in enhancing health outcomes and physical functional ability in high risk adults (aged 65-80) with obesity and cardiometabolic risk factors .

Are Serious Games Promoting Mobility an Attractive Alternative to Conventional Self-training for...

Mobility LimitationsGeriatric Disorder

The main objective of this study is to determine whether elderly people in rehabilitation setting show higher adherence to self-training when using computer-based-learning games (i.e. the so called serious games) than when performing conventional exercises. Secondly the study explores to which extend balance and mobility performances vary according to the mode of self-training. The primary study hypothesis is that elderly people practice longer and more frequently with serious games than with a conventional exercise booklet. The secondary hypothesis is that patients experience a significant higher improvement in their balance capacity by using serious games compared to patients performing conventional exercises.

Emergence Agitation Between Sevoflurane and Desflurane in Pediatric

ChildrenUrologic Diseases1 more

Sevoflurane is the volatile anesthetic agent of choice in pediatric surgery. Nevertheless, sevoflurane anesthesia had the high incidence of emergence delirium compared to halothane and isoflurane.Bortone L et al.reported isoflurane for maintenance decreased incidence of emergence agitation compared to sevoflurane in unpremedicated preschool children under elective subumbilical surgery (32% versus 52% respectively). Desflurane is the new volatile anesthetic agent which provides faster recovery compared to sevoflurane.Valley et al.reported no significant differences between sevoflurane or desflurane anesthesia in children in term of the serious airway complication such as laryngospasm or desaturation excepted the number of coughing episodes were more frequent in the desflurane compared to sevoflurane (36 versus 18).Mayer J et al. reported sevoflurane had severity of Pediatric Anesthesia Emergence Delirium (PAED) scale higher than desflurane in ear, nose, throat inpatient surgery in children (12(2-20) versus 6(0-15) respectively) with no reported of incidence of emergence agitation between those two. Therefore, the investigators would like to compare the incidence of emergence agitation, recovery profile and respiratory events between desflurane and sevoflurane anesthesia in pediatric ambulatory urologic surgery under general anesthesia and combined with regional anesthesia.

Goal-directed Mobilization of Medical Inpatients

Immobility SyndromeFall4 more

Immobilization in general internal medicine inpatients is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality. Goal-directed mobilization (GDM) may improve mobility. The aim of this study is to assess, if GDM increases physical activity (DEMMI score) during hospitalization and improves quality of care until 3 months after hospitalization.
