Efficacy of Prophylactic Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) Performed by Nurses for Decreasing Severity...

Hematologic Malignancy

The LLLT has an anti-inflammatory, analgesic effect and accelerates the healing of ulcerated lesions. There are little data in the literature showing its efficacy in prevention of mucositis in cohorts of patients with hematopoietic stem cells transplantation. The main objective of this study is to assess the efficacy of a prophylactic low level laser therapy performed by nurses on the severity of oral mucositis during HSCT.

Morphine Mouthwash for Management of Oral Mucositis in Patients With Head and Neck Cancer

Stomatitis

Oral mucositis is a debilitating side effects of cancer treatment for which there is not much successful treatments at yet. The investigators are going to evaluate the effectiveness of topical morphine compared with a routine mouthwash in managing cancer treatment-induced mucositis. The investigators hypothesize that topical morphine is more effective and more satisfied by patients than the magic mouthwash in reducing severity of cancer treatment-induced oral mucositis.

Treatment of Severe Mucositis Pain With Oral Ketamine Mouthwash

Mucositis

Oral mucositis (inflammation of the lining of the mouth) is a very common adverse effect when chemotherapy and radiation therapy are used to treat cancer. Mucositis occurs in about 40% of patients receiving standard dose chemotherapy, 80% of patients receiving radiation therapy of the head and neck, and up to 100% of patients undergoing a bone marrow transplant. Because the pain from mucositis can be so bad it can cause the inability to eat or drink, inability to talk, gagging and drooling. Many times mucositis can affect cancer treatment because patients may have to be given a lower dose of a drug or stop treatment completely. There are not many treatments today that can help relieve the severe pain caused from mucositis. This research study will help researchers determine if using an oral mouthwash called Ketamine will help lessen mucositis pain. Ketamine is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use with general anesthesia, sedation and for severe pain. WVU Hospital is now using Ketamine mouthwash as a standard treatment option for mucositis pain. During this study patients will be assessed to determine the level of pain caused by their mucositis. This will occur before the first dose, one hour after the first dose, and then daily until they are no longer on the study. Patients will use the mouthwash by swishing and spitting (20mg/5ml) four times each day, and also every four hours as needed. Patients will use the mouthwash on this study until their mucositis gets better or until the mucositis gets worse (or if the pain does not get better after three days of treatment).

Evaluation of Soft Tissue Response to Titanium Healing Abutments Treated by Erbium: YAG Laser or...

Peri-implant Mucositis

The attachment of peri implant soft tissue to the implant serves as a biological seal that can prevent the development of inflammatory peri-implant diseases. Presence of contaminants has been suggested to be associated with tissue damaging inflammation and titanium wear microparticles were demonstrated to activate osteoclastic action. Er: YAG laser has been extensively investigated clinically for applications for treating periimplantitis either independently or in combination with other techniques, showing favorable outcomes. Plasma spray treatment can decontaminate surfaces without modifying their topography. It is also able to increase the surface energy by obtaining more hydrophilic surfaces, which may increase the capacity of the titanium oxide layer to interact with cells and proteins of surrounding tissue improving cell adhesion to the treated surface.

Non-surgical Treatment of Peri-implant Mucositis

Peri-implant Mucositis

This a Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial comparing two techniques for the nonsurgical treatment of peri-implant mucositis. The main objective of the present randomized controlled clinical trial is to determine whether the application of a novel treatment strategy for peri-implant mucositis could lead to significantly improved clinical parameters as compared to standard treatment. Half of the patients receives treatment with manual instruments and chlorhexidine gel 1%, half receives treatment with submucosal biofilm removal by erythritol powder.

Randomized Study of Beet Root in Locally Advanced Squamous Cell Cancer of the Head and Neck

Mucositis

The objective of the current proposal is to determine if concentrated beet root could improve medical treatment compliance as defined by completion of radiotherapy and 3 cycles of chemoradiation without dose reduction, preserve fat-free mass, and strength while reducing mucositis. The investigators central hypothesis is that dietary nitrate supplementation in head and neck cancer patients receiving aggressive medical care will improve compliance with medical treatment by attenuating the loss of muscle mass and strength and reducing symptoms (mucositis) associated with treatment compared to patients receiving standard care with placebo.
