In patients with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), a high proportion will suffer from inflammation of the large bowel (colitis) during their intensive treatment. As there is no standard treatment available for this potentially lifethreatening condition, the investigators focus on the role of parenteral nutrition which these patients inevitably require. Preclinical and clinical data have shown strong anti-inflammatory properties of fish oil preparations containing poly-unsaturated omega3 fatty acids (PUFA) as opposed to other lipid fractions. There may be a therapeutic benefit of adding omega3 PUFA to standard nutrition in patients with chemotherapy-induced colitis. In this small phase II study, the investigators address the effectiveness of this approach to reduce the incidence and severity of colitis in AML patients.

Benefits of Immunonutrition in Patients With Head and Neck Cancer Receiving Chemoradiation

This study evaluated the benefits of immunonutrition regarding the prevention of severe mucositis. Patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) undergoing definitive concurrent chemoradiation including 3-week cycles of cisplatin were enrolled in this double-blind phase II study. Patients were randomly assigned to receive an immunonutrition containing omega-3-fatty acids, arginine, dietary nucleotides, and soluble fiber or an isocaloric isonitrogenous control. All patients received the assigned product 5 days before each chemotherapy session. The proportion of patients with severe mucositis was compared between the immunonutrition and control groups.

The objective of the study is to assess primarily the effect of topical oral Omega-3 hydrogel in prevention of radiation-induced oral mucositis and secondarily, to test the effect of topical oral Omega-3 hydrogel on oral microbiome.

Efficacy of Propolis in the Prevention of Oral Mucositis

The study was carried out to determine the efficacy of propolis in the prevention of oral mucositis and gastrointestinal symptoms associated with oral mucositis in patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and myelodysplastic syndrome receiving high-dose chemotherapy and/or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. 64 patients, 32 in the propolis and 32 in the control group, were involved in the prospective randomized controlled experimental study. While the standard oral care treatment protocol of the clinic was administered to the control group, aqueous propolis extract was applied to the propolis group in addition to the standard oral care treatment protocol.

Oral Self Care Protocol and Oral Mucositis

Objective: This study was conducted in order to examine the effect of oral self-care protocol based on Orem's Self-Care Deficiency Theory on oral mucositis and self-care agency. Method: This study was conducted as a randomized controlled trial between August 2021 and July 2022, patients with hematological malignancies receiving high-dose chemotherapy at the Izmir Ege University Faculty of Medicine Hospital and Izmir Training and Research Hospital. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 60 patients, including 30 application groups and 30 control groups, who met the inclusion criteria using the computer-based stratified randomization method. The study data were collected using "Patient Information Questionnaire," "WHO-Oral Mucositis Toxicity Scale," "Oral Assessment Guide," "Self-Care Agency Scale," "Data Collection Form Prepared According to Orem's Self-Care Deficiency Nursing Theory," "Oral Care Chart," and "Oral Cavity Photography." The oral self-care protocol, which includes training and oral care practices, was applied to the application group for 21 days from the beginning of chemotherapy treatment. The control group was not subjected to any oral care attempts by the researcher and received standard nursing care in the clinic. The data were evaluated by descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test, the Mann-Whitney U test, the Mc Ne-mar test, the Kappa compliance test, and the t test in dependent and independent groups. Oral MucositisCarcinoma in Situ of Upper Respiratory Tract

MUCIPLIQ is a nanopolymer engineered to mimic glycosaminoglycans such as heparan sulfates. Glycosaminoglycans are involved 1) in the stabilization of cells micro-environment, known as extracellular matrix, by binding to structural proteins, and 2) in cells communication process by protecting growth factors. At the site of a lesion, glycosaminoglycans are degraded, thereby the extracellular matrix is disorganized and the tissue is destroyed. By replacing damaged glycosaminoglycans, MUCIPLIQ provides a protection, and restores the matrix scaffold and cells communication, a process known as Matrix Therapy. The purpose of this new controlled study is to determine whether MUCIPLIQ can decrease the incidence and the severity of radio-chemotherapy-induced mucositis in patients suffering of upper aerodigestive tract cancers, when used as a preventive agent. The study's main hypothesis is that MUCIPLIQ mouthwash applications before radiotherapy would protect the healthy oral tissue against cytotoxic effect of chemotherapy and radiations.

The main purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of melatonin oral gel compared to placebo in the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing concurrent chemoradiation. Other objectives are to assess the Quality of Life (QoL), to evaluate the safety and tolerability and to assess the pharmacokinetic profile of melatonin oral gel administration, in all cases compared to placebo in patients with head and neck cancer and oral mucositis secondary to concurrent chemoradiation.

Prospective double-blinded randomized clinical study. Aim of the study is to compare the effectiveness of Caphosol mouth rinses in prevention of oral mucositis as compared to 0.9% NaCl rinses. Patients will be randomized to receive either Caphosol or 0.9% NaCl rinses four times a day for seven days from the beginning of chemotherapeutic regimen. The same patient will be given the opposite rinse during the next chemotherapeutic regimen, so everyone will get both mouth rinses once during the trial.
