Peri-implant Disease and Prosthetic Cement: Cross-sectional Study

Peri-implant MucositisPeri-Implantitis

The main objective of the present clinical study project, of a cross-sectional observational nature, is to evaluate the presence of submucosal cement residues through endoscopic visualization in clinical situations with peri-implant disease. The secondary objective is to investigate the potential correlation between the severity of the pathological condition and the spatial position of cement residues in relation to the implant-prosthetic unit. For each subject, the following data were collected: gender, age, periodontal history, smoking habits, reasons for implant rehabilitation (trauma, caries, periodontitis, agenesis, other), the position of the implant in the oral cavity, elapsed time between prosthetic rehabilitation and pathological condition. If the deposit was recognized as cement residue, its presence was recorded, and the anatomical position of the cement residue (mesial, distal, lingual/palatal, vestibular) and the spatial position of cement residues in relation to the implant-prosthetic unit were collected.

Effect of Fermented Products and Probiotics on the Condition of the Implant

Peri-ImplantitisPeri-implant Mucositis

126 individuals with peri-implant disease and health, aged between 18-70 years, who applied to Bolu University Faculty of Dentistry Periodontology Clinic, participated in the study. The inclusion criteria for patient participation in the study were: age of patients between 18 and 70 years; the presence of at least 20 natural teeth in the oral cavity; systemic health. Peri-implant status was determined by the clinician (T.Ş.) by evaluating dental implants' plaque, gingival index, bleeding on probing, pocket depth measurements, and clinical attachment level. In addition, them systemic illness, pregnancy, breastfeeding status, medication, antibiotic use, and whether they smoked were questioned. Systemically unhealthy patients who did not use antibiotics within a month, were breastfeeding or pregnant, had uncontrolled diabetes, rheumatic fever, a history of lung and kidney disorders, and used drugs that could affect periodontal tissues were not included in the study. After examination, the patients were divided into three groups according to their disease: Peri-implantitis (42 patients), peri-implantitis (42 patients), and peri-implant health (42 patients). Demographic characteristics (age, weight, gender, height, education, and employment status) of the participants were collected with a questionnaire. With this survey, fermented foods and probiotic products such as bacon, soy sauce, pickles, sourdough bread, whole grain, rye, wholemeal bread, ayran, kefir, turnip, vinegar (homemade), pomegranate syrup (homemade), probiotic beverage, the frequency and amount of consumption of cheese, dark chocolate, tablets, capsules, chassis, butter and other (Kimchi, sauerkrauth, miso soup, fermented herring, kombucha, etc.) were determined. It was requested to determine the relationship between the health and disease of the implant and the frequency of consumption of fermented and probiotic products and foods in individuals with implants.

ZeroTolerance Mucositis: Managing Oral and Alimentary Mucositis With High Potency Sucralfate - ProThelial...

Oral MucositisNausea2 more

RATIONALE: Polymerized (cross-linked) sucralfate malate paste (ProThelial) may be an effective single therapy approach for the management of chemoradiation mucositis, treating and preventing its occurrence in the oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine. PURPOSE: This observational multi-phase trial is studying how well polymerized (cross-linked) sucralfate malate paste (ProThelial) works to prevent and treat mucositis in adult patients who are to receive or have received chemo/radiation therapy that have caused or is anticipated to cause mucositis in the oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, small or large intestine. The Phase IV study addresses prevention and treatment in the oral cavity. The Phase I study addresses prevention and treatment in the esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine.

Can Cytokines Predict the Severity of Acute Mucositis and the Need for Gastrostomy Tubes (PEG)?...

Oral MucositisXerostomia2 more

Mucositis and xerostomia are the most common complications of head and neck (H&N) irradiation, and the combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy is associated with a significantly higher rate of complications. Mucositis usually develops during the second or third week of a course of standard radiotherapy, and the pain it causes peaks between the third and last week of treatment. The pain then persists for at least one month following the completion of therapy, and may be so overwhelming that it prevents patients from swallowing food and fluids. The patient is therefore at a risk to develop malnutrition, and must be treated vigorously. In this respect, the use of gastrostomy tubes (PEG) has been shown to be beneficial. Completion of the full course of irradiation, without interruption, is important for achieving best possible results in cancer of the H&N. It is therefore essential to identify and refer patients at risk to receive effective and timely nutritional intervention. Since mucositis represents a clinical continuum which differs between patients, it is difficult to assess before-hand which patients will be at risk. There is no simple laboratory tool available, which could predict which patients are susceptible to develop severe mucositis and dysphagia, and eventually will require a feeding gastrostomy. The first phase of mucositis, inflammation, results in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). In general, the inflammatory cytokines IL-1, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and TNF-α are elevated in inflammatory conditions and are found in increased levels in blood and tissue fluid during inflammation, while anti-inflammatory cytokines are produced in a decreased manner. The main purpose of this study is to find the best indicators and prognosticators of mucositis occurring in the healthy oral tissues of H&N cancer patients receiving treatment, and to understand the cytokines balance mechanism of action. Assuming there is a correlation between high cytokines levels during inflammation and the severity of radiation induced mucositis, finding these prognostic factors may help us predict during the first part of the treatment the need for PEG, placing it prior to the complications associated with severe mucositis on one hand, and avoiding unnecessary procedures on the other hand.
