Study of Myopia Acquisition and Prevention

Myopia

Purpose: To determine whether the use of reading glasses blocks the near work mediated increased incidence of myopia in healthy school children. Methods: SMART enrolled 115 emmetropic children (ages 7-9 years). The children were recruited in the Principality of Liechtenstein. They were randomly assigned to either the control group (n=52) or to receive reading glasses with a lens power of +2.0 dioptres (n=63). The primary outcome measure was progression towards myopia as determined by autorefraction after cycloplegia. The secondary outcome measure was change in biometry measurements of corneal curvature, axial length, anterior chamber depth, crystalline lens thickness, and vitreous chamber depth using partial coherence interferometry.

TGFB1 And LAMA1 Gene Polymorphisms in High Myopia

High MyopiaGene Mutations

The investigators aimed to investigate TGFB1 and LAMA1 gene polymorphisms in children with high myopia in order to determine the genetic basis of large myopic shifts causing severe visual impairment and complications. Seventy-four children with high myopia (≥6 diopters [D]; study group) and 77 emmetropic children (±0.5D; control group) were included. Genetic and polymorphism analyses were performed in the Medical Genetics Laboratory using DNA purified from the patients' blood samples.

Trial of a Novel Family-Based Intervention to Increase Outdoor Time and Fitness

MyopiaObesity

This study aims to implement a new family-based health behavior community program to increase time spent outdoors and physical activity among Singapore children aged 6 to 12 years in a 1-year randomized clinical trial. 300 children from 250 families will be randomly assigned to either a family-based intervention or no intervention. The family-based intervention comprises structured weekend outdoor activities organized by National Parks and incentives for children to wear a pedometer and increase their daily steps. Families who meet their monthly step and outdoor activity goals will receive a range of prizes and incentives. Both groups will receive brochures on the National Myopia Prevention Program and physical activity. The success of the intervention will be evaluated through light meters, 7-day outdoor diaries, questionnaires documenting outdoor time and myopia; as well as pedometer steps, walking tests, and body mass index. A community-based intervention will be developed to improve the health of Singapore children by increasing outdoor time and physical activity to prevent myopia and obesity.
