Colorectal CancerMetastatic CancerRATIONALE: Monoclonal antibodies, such as cetuximab, can block tumor growth in different ways. Some block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Others find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as irinotecan, leucovorin, and fluorouracil, work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Giving cetuximab together with combination chemotherapy may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well giving cetuximab together with combination chemotherapy works as first-line therapy in treating patients with colorectal cancer that has spread to the liver and/or lung.

Metastatic Colorectal CancerLiver MetastasesThis is an open label single arm prospective multicenter Phase II study in around 20 patients. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate whether the addition of sunitinib to FOLFIRI results in a significant reduction of tumor vessel permeability (TVP) and blood flow (BF) measured by DCE-MRI and DCE-USI, measured on liver metastases. Secondary objectives are antitumor response, time to progression (TTP), effect on pharmacokinetics of sunitinib and biomarkers (VEGF und soluble VEGF-receptor) and drug/treatment safety.

Monoclonal antibodies, such as bevacizumab, can block tumor growth in different ways. Some block the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Others find tumor cells and help kill them or carry tumor-killing substances to them. Giving combination chemotherapy together with bevacizumab may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is comparing two combination chemotherapy regimens given together with bevacizumab to see how well they work as first-line therapy in treating patients with metastatic colorectal cancer that cannot be removed by surgery.
