Clonidine for Neurocognitive Sequelae

Treatment-Related Cancer

The goals of the study are to determine the efficacy of clonidine in the treatment of children with neurocognitive sequelae following the therapy of long term malignancies. In addition, the study hopes to determine the long-term effect of clonidine on children's academic and psychosocial function.

MetastasesCancer

Patients in good general condition with resectable brain metastases, looks better with more intense treatment of metastases. This local treatment has been accomplished with surgery or radiosurgery. However, there are no randomized studies comparing these two types of treatment. The purpose of this study is to make this.

The folate receptor is over-expressed on many types of cancer cells and new folate receptor targeted therapies are being developed to target cancer cells that over-express the folate receptor. As with other targeted therapies, it is important to develop diagnostic tests that will provide accurate information on folate receptor status and aid in selecting patients that may benefit from folate-targeted therapy.

A Trial Evaluating the Pharmacokinetics and Mode of Action of EndoTAG®-1 in Tumor Patients With...

Liver CancerNeoplasm Metastasis

The primary objective of study CT 4003 is to assess the behavior of EndoTAG®-1 in the body (making a so-called pharmacokinetic profile). Therefore, the course of the drug in the body is examined, i.e. the amount and speed of the drug uptake as well as the distribution and the elimination of the drug is being investigated. Further objectives of the study are to assess the effect of EndoTAG®-1 on liver metastases concerning size and blood supply measured by imaging techniques (contrast-enhanced ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging as well as duplex sonography) and to assess the effect on blood markers which are indicators for the destruction and neoplasm of blood vessels (so-called markers of angiogenesis).

Micronutrient Supplemented Probiotic Yogurt for HIV/AIDS and Other Immunodeficiencies

HIV InfectionsCancer1 more

We hypothesize that micronutrient fortified probiotic yogurt can improve nutritional status and enhance immunity parameters in subjects HIV/AIDS and other immunodeficiencies. We have developed a micronutrient-fortified probiotic yogurt that has safe and beneficial levels of micronutrients for human consumption. This has been undertaken with the guidance of Edward Farnworth, a senior research scientist at Agri-Food Canada-Food Research and Development Centre, St. Hyacinthe, Quebec We will now measure nutritional parameters (height, weight, serum albumin, serum nutrient levels, blood urea, liver function tests (AST, ALT)) to determine if there is a statistically significant difference between the various levels of fortified probiotic yogurt and the placebo on the nutritional parameters of the subjects consuming the yogurt. We will measure immunological parameters (CD4 lymphocyte count, CBC, levels of TNFα, IL-12, IL-10, and G-CSF [Kim, et.al. 2006]) in order to determine if there is a statistically significant difference using fortified probiotic yogurt compared to a placebo. In addition, we will determine if the micronutrient-fortified probiotic yogurt has a significant impact on the overall quality of life for the subjects using the "linear analogue self assessment" tool [Kaiser, et.al 2006].

Outpatient Yoga Study for Adolescents Receiving Chemotherapy

Pediatric CancerQuality of Life5 more

LAY SUMMARY: The diagnosis and treatment of pediatric cancer is a significant stressor for adolescents and their families . Although most adolescents cope well with their cancer diagnosis, many experience emotional distress. A small proportion of those diagnosed with cancer will experience more intense mental distress, such as depression, anxiety, or anger. The practice of yoga may be a possible way of treating the negative emotional symptoms experienced by these adolescents. Previous studies suggest that yoga may improve anxiety, mood and psychological distress in adults with cancer. The results of two recent pediatric pilot studies show that yoga programs improved quality of life for adolescents receiving cancer treatment. Given this, we wish to examine the feasibility of offering a 10-week yoga program for adolescents who are receiving outpatient chemotherapy. This program includes both one-on-one in-person sessions and home-based sessions offered using SkypeTM. To assess this program, we will monitor patients' attendance, ask their opinions of the program and evaluate whether yoga improved their mental well-being. This study represents an important step toward identifying possible treatments to improve patients' quality of life and emotional health.

Development of ImmunOncoTool

CancerCancer1 more

The purpose of this study is to facilitate the recognition and early management of Immune Related Adverse Events (irAEs) experienced by cancer patients taking immunotherapy. This is done through the development of a web-based platform in which patients receive valuable education about irAEs, patients' irAEs are routinely monitored, patient reported irAEs are embedded into patient clinical care, and patient-provider communication and prompt management of irAEs is facilitated. The intervention component includes access to the web-based platform, routine monitoring of irAEs every week for twelve weeks and then bi-weekly for an additional eight weeks, and messages to healthcare providers and patients if a reported irAE is deemed severe enough that it warrants provider attention. Participants are randomized into either an intervention group (described above) or a control group, in which their irAEs are monitored once after a twelve week interval and again after an additional eight weeks. Additionally, both intervention and control participants complete three assessments: baseline (at the beginning of the research study), 12-week follow-up, and 20-week follow-up.

Study of the Intra-patient Variability of the Quantitative Parameters of Tumor Perfusion Evaluated...

GIST Metastatic CancerBreast Metastatic Cancer3 more

RECIST criteria for evaluating tumor response are often inadequate for the evaluation of anti-angiogenic drugs. An evaluation model of tumor perfusion with contrast-enhanced ultrasonography was developed at Gustave Roussy. It assesses the tumor vascular response through the analysis of 7 different parameters. Several studies (four at IGR, involving 117 patients, and a multicenter study involving 400 patients) showed that CEUS allows early evaluation of the effect of anti-angiogenic drugs. Two of these parameters are particularly interesting for the early identification of patients responding (or not) to treatment. Those are area under curve , and area under the wash-out. To further validate the use of these parameters, it is essential to measure and describe the level of their intra-patient variability.
