Is Invasive ICU-treatment Associated With Mental Illness?

Postintensive Care SyndromeAnxiety Disorder4 more

Understanding long-term complications after intensive care is important to be able to offer prophylactic and therapeutic measures to post-intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Since patients in the ICU experience life threatening conditions, severe psychological and physical stress, we hypothesized that patients after ICU have an increased risk of mental illnesses specifically anxiety disorders, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Moreover, we hypothesized that the prevalence and severity of mental illnesses are related to the extent of intensive care. Our endpoints are the prevalence of anxiety disorders, depression one year after ICU-care and if the extent of intensive care an independent predictor of psychiatric illness one year after ICU admission. We will assess Swedish Intensive Care registry data for all adult ICU patients admitted between 2010-2015 and assess ICD-10 codes for anxiety disorders, depression and PTSD one year after ICU admission.

The Impact of the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2 Disease) on Psychopathology

Psychosis;SchizophrenicPersonality Disorders3 more

The outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic may be considered a traumatic phenomenon. In a sample of subjects suffering from different psychiatric disorders, psychopathological status and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms over time are assessed using specific psychometric scales. In a sample of healthy controls PTSD symptoms are evaluated by Impact of Event Scale Revised (IES-R) and compared to patients' scores. We hypothesize that a significant number of psychiatric outpatients have experienced a clinical psychopathological worsening and a greater prevalence of PTSD symptoms compared to the general population. The study of the potential psychopathological changes could represent a useful contribution to deepen the understanding of psychological consequences of the pandemic.

Anxiety and Symptom Burden in Hemodialysis Patients

AnxietyESRD

Anxiety has been identified as a prevalent and significant co-morbid condition in patients with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) being treated with hemodialysis. In particular, anxious sensitivity to symptoms commonly experienced by dialysis patients may lead patients to prematurely terminate their dialysis sessions and may have consequences on their dialysis adequacy and overall quality of life. The proposed study will examine the relationships between anxiety, depression, quality of life, symptom burden and dialysis prescription adherence. The primary regression analyses will be used to predict the influence of anxiety and depression (independently and together) on measures of adherence behaviors.

Assessing the Feasibility of Screening and Treating Anxiety and Depression in the Bone Marrow Transplant...

AnxietyDepression

The primary purpose of this study is twofold: (1) to assess the feasibility of screening adult hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) candidates for psychiatric comorbidity (depression and anxiety), and (2) to assess the feasibility of treating depression and anxiety in adult HSCT candidates through a collaborative care algorithm. The ultimate goal of this project is improving HSCT outcomes for allogeneic HSCT candidates by improving identification and treatment of depression and anxiety disorders.

The Measurement of Mood Variability and Sustained Attention in Women With Alcohol Dependence.

Alcohol AbuseAnxiety Disorders1 more

The purpose of this study is to measure daily mood changes and to find out whether these mood changes are related to the ability to maintain attention on a task. Problems with mood are more common among women however, the association between symptoms of alcohol abuse and mood syndromes is inconsistent. First we hypothesize that women with lifetime diagnoses of alcohol abuse will not demonstrate higher symptoms of anxiety, depression, neuroticism and mood variability than control groups. Second, that the severity of these symptoms will not correlate with performance on measures of sustained attention.

Does Spiritual/Religious Commitment Mediate the Relationship Between Mood Variability and Suicidal...

Anxiety DisorderMood Disorder

The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not spiritual and/or religious commitment affects mood variability and thoughts of suicide. First we hypothesize that among patients with depressive symptoms, those who have higher religious/spiritual (R/S) commitment will have less suicidal ideation and less mood variability. Second, we hypothesize that higher mood variability will be associated with more suicidal ideation. Finally, dependent on the first two hypotheses, we propose that R/S commitment will mediate the relationship between mood variability and suicidal ideation.
