Active clinical trials for "Neurotoxicity Syndromes"

RATIONALE: Chemoprotective drugs, such as calcium gluconate and magnesium sulfate, may prevent neurotoxicity caused by oxaliplatin. It is not yet known which administration schedule of calcium gluconate and magnesium sulfate is more effective in preventing neurotoxicity. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying different administration schedules of calcium gluconate and magnesium sulfate and comparing how well they work in neurotoxicity in patients with colon cancer or rectal cancer receiving oxaliplatin-based combination chemotherapy.

RATIONALE: Acetyl-L-carnitine may prevent or lessen neuropathy caused by chemotherapy. It is not yet known whether acetyl-L-carnitine is more effective than a placebo in preventing neuropathy caused by chemotherapy. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying acetyl-L-carnitine to see how well it works compared with a placebo in preventing neuropathy in women with stage I, stage II, or stage III breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy.

RATIONALE: Electronic stimulation using a MC5-A Scrambler may help relieve pain in patients who develop peripheral neuropathy while undergoing chemotherapy treatments for cancer. PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well MC5-A Scrambler therapy works in reducing peripheral neuropathy caused by chemotherapy.

RATIONALE: Memantine may be able to decrease side effects caused by whole-brain radiation therapy. It is not yet known if memantine is effective in preventing side effects caused by whole-brain radiation therapy. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying memantine to see how well it works compared to a placebo in preventing side effects caused by whole-brain radiation therapy in patients with brain metastases from solid tumors.

RATIONALE: Donepezil may decrease the side effects caused by radiation therapy to the brain. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying how well donepezil works in treating young patients with primary brain tumors previously treated with radiation therapy to the brain.

RATIONALE: Topical cream containing amitriptyline and ketamine may help relieve pain, numbness, tingling, and other symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. It is not yet known whether topical amitriptyline and ketamine cream is more effective than a placebo in treating peripheral neuropathy caused by chemotherapy. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying the side effects and how well topical amitriptyline and ketamine cream work compared with a placebo in treating peripheral neuropathy caused by chemotherapy in patients with cancer.

RATIONALE: Learning about the side effects of chemotherapy may help plan treatment and may help patients live more comfortably. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying nerve function in older diabetic patients who are undergoing chemotherapy for metastatic solid tumors.

RATIONALE: Chemotherapy may cause memory loss, attention loss, and other problems that make it difficult for patients to think clearly. EGb761 may help maintain mental clarity in patients undergoing chemotherapy. PURPOSE: Randomized clinical trial to study the effectiveness of EGb761 in preventing loss of mental clarity in women who are receiving chemotherapy for newly diagnosed breast cancer.

RATIONALE: Lamotrigine may be effective in reducing pain, numbness, tingling, and other symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. It is not yet known whether lamotrigine is effective in treating peripheral neuropathy caused by chemotherapy. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying how well lamotrigine works in reducing pain, numbness, tingling, and other symptoms of peripheral neuropathy caused by chemotherapy in patients with cancer.

RATIONALE: Learning about the relationship between platinum levels in the blood and neurotoxicity in patients receiving oxaliplatin may help plan treatment and may help patients live more comfortably. PURPOSE: This phase IV trial is studying the relationship between platinum levels in the blood and neurotoxicity in patients who are receiving oxaliplatin for gastrointestinal cancer.
