Appetite and General Nutritional DisordersINTRODUCTION: Global protein consumption has been increasing for decades due to changes in socio-economic demographics and consumer trends towards higher protein intake, which may be related to their health benefits in performance nutrition and appetite regulation. The additional intake of protein often occurs in the form of supplements. One of the main ingredients used in sports and weight loss supplements are animal-derived proteins such as whey, which are of high quality, containing all the essential amino acids required in human nutrition with a high absorption rate. However, whey protein has a high environmental footprint, and it may contribute to insulin resistance in susceptible groups (e.g. obese, T2DM, insulin resistant, or those with sarcopenic obesity). Rice and potato protein isolates are high-quality plant proteins containing all essential amino acids comparably to whey protein. These plant-derived proteins may provide a more sustainable and accessible alternative to animal-derived proteins for appetite regulation and weight management.

Previous studies have shown that non-obese people have different amounts of these hormones in their blood compared to obese people. The investigators hypothesize that exercise will promote improved insulin sensitivity and corresponding beneficial changes in obese individuals. The investigators predict exercise induced changes in 24-hour plasma hormone levels will be associated with improved appetite during overfeeding in obese individuals.
Metabolic and Functional Impact of Various Breakfast Models
Metabolism and Nutrition DisorderIn the present study the investigators compared the hormonal and metabolic effects of three meal loads very popular among Italian eating habits, both in the resting- and exercising state. Given the lack of time is considered a common barrier to exercise adherence, we wanted to identify a low dose of exercise capable to produce health benefits in the post-absorptive status elicited by three commonly consumed meal-models in Mediterranean countries. To this end, healthy young volunteers firstly underwent an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and three meal tolerance tests. Secondly, in an extra set of experiments, subjects cycled at low intensity for the last 20 minutes of the same glucose/meal tolerance test. Glycemia, insulinemia, ghrelinemia, lipidemia, and satiety were measured throughout OGTT and each test-meal load.

Using novel "imiomics" (imaging technique using PET/MR bioinformatics) analyses to examine possible metabolic differences between energy restricted diet and gastric by-pass surgery on whole-body and tissue specific insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance, metabolite and protein profiles, fatty acid metabolism, ectopic fat content, and gene expression in adipose tissue. This study aims to identify novel biomarkers and drug targets for type 2 diabetes as well as validate promising and established biomarkers in an interventional model for improved glucose metabolism.
