The aim of this 2- arm randomized-control study is to determine the effect of an oral hygiene self care intervention on the oral health status and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of HIV-positive children (age: 8-16 years, n=170) presenting to five pediatric HIV clinics in Kano, Nigeria. The intervention will comprise oral health education and instructions on oral self-care. Data on oral health status and OHRQoL will be obtained at baseline and at 1, 3 and 6 months. Study findings will help inform policies to improve the oral health and OHRQoL of HIV-positive Nigerian children and guide the integration of oral health care services into HIV programs.

This randomized controlled trial included experimental group: AR group (EG) and control group(CG), respectively. The EG will receive augmented reality (AR) simulation training intervention with traditional classroom oral health education. The CG only receive traditional classroom oral health education.

RCT on Effectiveness of Oral Health Preventive Programmes in School Children in Uganda

Dental caries represents a challenge for Oral Health Services in several African Countries, like Uganda. Few studies have been reported the burden of oral health, its prevention and non-operative treatment among school children in African countries. Aim: To assess the prevalence and risk factors of dental caries and the effectiveness of strategies to prevent and treat dental caries using a non-operative approach among children in Gulu Municipality, Uganda. Methods: The proposal RCT is structured in three phases: 1. A descriptive cross-sectional survey to collect oral data among 610 school children selected using a multistage cluster sampling; 2. A randomized unblinded two-arm trial to assess the difference in the treatment/prevention of dental caries using non-operative means among school children in the Ugandian Gulu municipality; and 3. A comparison of oral health conditions between a group of children who will be given dental cleaning tools and followed up over time versus a control group. The oral health status of the participants will be assessed according to WHO and ICDAS guidelines. Stata 14.0. will be used for analysis; descriptive statistics will be carried out to analyze continuous and categorical variables and chi-square test as well as independent tests for bivariate analysis and modified poisson regression. In addition, the factors associated with dental caries will be determined by linear regression models using a statistical significance level of 5% (α = 0.05). Discussion: This trial will be the first trial conducted in Uganda assessing a school-based caries prevention programme using the WHO and ICDAS standardized international guidelines. The findings obtained will increase knowledge on oral health in Uganda school children and the effectiveness of community-based caries prevention programme in this population.

The prevention of oral illnesses in children and adolescents undergoing oncological treatment is critical, because oral lesions caused by this therapy significantly exacerbate the clinical condition and increase the risk of infection, as well as making it harder to perform required dental procedures when needed . "The key to success in maintaining a healthy oral cavity during therapy is patient compliance. The child and the parents should be educated regarding the possible acute side effects." Pediatric cancer patients may have a lower quality of life if they have poor dental health. Preventing and treating pre-existing oral illnesses is critical to reduce problems in these people. It is critical to raise awareness of the benefits of proper oral health so that this understanding becomes a positive attitude, reducing the discomfort of these children. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends pediatric oncology/hematology that Pediatric dentists must be involved in the treatment process from the moment cancer is diagnosed. This should be carried out by having a preventive and dental care plan developed based on the patient's needs before any cancer treatment is initiated. The aim of the study is primarily to report oral complications and manifestations during chemotherapy treatment in pediatric cancer patients and raise the awareness of their parents on these manifestations thus proper interventions can be carried out to prevent more serious problems.

Oral Manifestations of Systemic Sclerosis

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a rare multisystem connective-tissue disorder characterized by three major pathological hallmarks: widespread fibrosis, vasculopathy and immunological abnormalities. As all connective tissues can be affected, this condition has multiple effects on the orofacial region. Indeed, the latter is involved in approximately 80% of SSc patients. Oral manifestations have a major impact on quality of life and require specific treatments that should be performed as early as possible. Widening of the periodontal ligament space, that seems to be linked to an increased collagen synthesis, is one of the most common dental radiographic finding. However, this radiologic sign has been mostly studied on two-dimensional radiographs. The investigators have recently described in a patient suffering from SSc the existence of calcifications within the periodontal ligament space using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) approach (Jung et al., Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol 2013). Such calcifications, that have never been observed before, could be part of the phenotypic spectrum of the disease, in particular when dystrophic calcinosis is associated. They could furthermore constitute a specific feature of SSc. However, this radiographic sign requires to be investigated in a largest number of patients. Several cytokines have been implicated in SSc pathogenesis. A recent study has revealed that elevated CXCL4 serum levels correlate with disease complications, suggesting that this molecule could be used as a prognostic biomarker. Increased IL-6 serum levels also correlate with SSc severity. Gingival crevicular fluid can be easily collected from the gingival crevice surrounding the teeth and constitute an indicator of local but also systemic inflammation. Analysis of gingival crevicular fluid cytokine profile could contribute to the identification of specific SSc biomarkers and allow a better comprehension of oral manifestations pathogenesis. The aim of this case-control study is to characterize precisely the oral manifestations associated with SSc within the National Referral Center for Rare Autoimmune Diseases (Strasbourg, France) patient cohort in order to identify specific radiological, clinical and/or biological signs. Some of them could be correlated to the severity or to the prognosis of the disease. To the investigators knowledge it is the first study using tridimensional CBCT approach.

Oral Manifestations in Children With Cancer

Mucositis

Before the start of the selected chemotherapy patients will be treated preventively for oral mucositis. A group will carry out the mouthwash with chlorhexidine 0.12% twice a day for five days and another will be held to damage preventive therapy (wavelength of 660nm, power 100mW and lluencia of 4 J / cm² per point, with distance of 2cm between points located on the right buccal mucosa, left buccal mucosa, hard palate, upper lip and lower lip). Patients who develop oral mucositis even after the prevention, will be divided into three groups for laser sessions with the purpose of treatment of oral mucositis. The group assignment obeyed severity of oral mucositis. Group 1 will include patients with oral mucositis grade 1. Sera used wavelength of 660nm, power 100mW and lluencia of 4 J / cm². Group 2 included patients with oral mucositis grade 2. Sera used with a wavelength of 660nm, power 100mW and lluencia of 8 J / cm². Group 3 included patients with oral mucositis grade 3 Sera used laser diode AsGaAl operating in continuous mode, with a wavelength of 790 nm, power of 100mW and fluency of 8 J / cm².

Oral Irritation Study of Two Experimental Mouthrinses

Oral Manifestations

This study is 25 days long. People participating in this study will be asked to brush their teeth two times a day. People will be assigned to a mouthwash and will rinse four times a day at the site for five days. A dentist or dental hygienist will look at the mouth, teeth, tongue and gums to make sure the mouthwash does not irritate the mouth. After Day 5 of the study, people will continue to brush two times a day and will return on Day 24 to have their mouth looked at again. People without irritation in their mouth will rinse 4 times a day at the clinical site. People will return to the clinical site the next day and have a final oral exam in which the dentist or dental hygienist will look at the mouth for irritation.

The Oral Biomechanical Functions of Hong Kong Healthy Adults

Oral Manifestations

Hong Kong and Japan are similar in terms of facing the super-ageing society. Maintaining oral function in elderly is particularly important because it affects social, physical and mental health to the people and to the society. By using technology seems to be one of the solutions in dealing with this. Thus, this project aims at using state-of-the-art Age-tech that have been used in Japan to implement "Oral Frailty" concept in Hong Kong. Through identifying oral biomechanical in elderly population, the investigators expect the situation can be improved, and the data analysed and collected can be useful and impactful that can influence the dental communities around Southeast Asia and the globe.
