Evaluation of Stability of Two Uncemented Hip Implants Used for Total Hip Arthroplasty

OsteoarthritisHip

The purpose of this study is to measure quantitatively the implant stability and implant related remodeling of the periprosthetic femoral bone of the new uncemented Echo® Bi-Metric® Full proximal Profile total hip arthroplasty (THA) stem, and compare it to the classical uncemented Bi-Metric® Porous Primary THA stem by measuring migration of the stem assessed by model-based radiosteriometric analysis (MB-RSA) and measuring the periprosthetic adaptive bone remodeling assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

Suprainguinal Fascia Iliaca (SIFI) Block Improves Analgesia Following Total Hip Arthroplasty

Hip OsteoarthritisPrimary Total Hip Arthroplasty1 more

The purpose of this study is to learn if using a suprainguinal fascia iliaca (SIFI) injection technique (also called a "nerve block") that numbs the nerves going to the side and front of the upper leg will improve pain control after surgery. The SIFI technique uses a numbing solution (local anesthetics) that is injected next to nerves in the hip to reduce pain. This block may affect movement in the leg and make the legs weak. The amount of leg weakness is not known and assessment of this will be included in the study. Many institutions use the SIFI block for patients having total hip replacements, with the hope of providing good pain relief combined with improved mobility after surgery.

Use of Autologous Adipose-Derived Stromal Vascular Fraction To Treat Osteoarthritis of Hip, Knee,...

Osteoarthritis

This study will examine the safety and efficacy of autologous adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) cells for treatment of hip, knee and thumb osteoarthritis (OA); monitoring adverse events and measuring pain, function and stiffness in the joints of osteoarthritic subjects.

Exercises in the Post-operative Rehabilitation of THA

Hip Osteoarthritis

Subjects submitted to unilateral THA will be randomized into two rehabilitation groups. One group will receive a booklet with guidelines for postoperative care, while the other group will participate in face-to-face sessions with exercises with emphasis on muscle strengthening.

Exercise Therapy and Patient Education for Individuals With Hip Osteoarthritis. Long-term Follow-up....

Hip Osteoarthritis

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the long term effect of exercise therapy and patient education compared to patient education only in individuals with hip OA, and to evaluate predictive factors for changes in hip osteoarthritis both clinically and on x-ray. Main hypothesis H01: There are no significant long term ( 2 years) differences in hip function, quality of life, physical function and radiological changes between those individuals who went through a patient education program and a 12 week exercise therapy program compared to patient education program only. Material and Methods: 109 patients with radiographically verified hip OA are included in the randomized controlled trial; randomized to 12 week exercise therapy program and patient education (n=55) and patient education program only (n=54). Data will be collected 2 years after completed intervention period in the original RCT, and 6 months and 2 years postoperatively for those patients who have undergone total hip arthroplasty. The main outcome is: The Disease Specific WOMAC-Index. Secondary outcome measures are: Hip X-ray, SF-36v2 (quality of life),PASE (activity score), Self-efficacy for pain, isokinetic muscle strength tests, 6 minute walk test, Åstrand's bike test, range of motion. Status: This study is a prolongation of an on-going RCT (3a-2005-NAR). The inclusion, intervention and follow-ups including 1 year follow-up is completed. 2 year post-intervention follow-up will be completed in 2010, 2 year follow-up postoperative for patients undergoing total hip artroplasty will continue throughout 2011. The study will be carried out: NAR-Orthopedic Centre, Ullevaal University Hospital.

Tai Chi or Hydrotherapy for People With Osteoarthritis of the Hip(s) or Knee(s)

OsteoarthritisHip2 more

The aim of this study is to determine, in the framework of a randomized controlled clinical trial, whether Tai Chi can affect measurable improvements in self-reported outcomes such as pain, physical function and psychological well-being in people with osteoarthritis (OA) mainly affecting the hips or knees. The effectiveness of Tai Chi will be compared with both a non-intervention control group as well as with a formal exercise program, hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy has long been considered an effective intervention for people with chronic OA although scientific evidence is weak at present. The main study hypotheses are that Tai Chi or hydrotherapy can significantly decrease pain and physical limitations; improve health-related quality of life; and promote psychological well being in patients with OA of the hip(s) or knee(s); and that Tai Chi and hydrotherapy are of equal efficacy.

Effect of Capsular Repair on the Outcomes of Direct Anterior Total Hip Arthroplasty.

Coxarthrosis

Total hip arthroplasty is a successful surgical procedure performed as a last-line treatment in primary and secondary coxarthrosis. Recently, the direct anterior approach (DAA) has gained popularity by maintaining abduction force and reducing dislocation rates. Soft tissue stability in the anterior is increased by adding capsule repair with the preservation of the posterior structures in the DAA. The degradation of the biological structure of the capsule due to degenerative changes in the end stage coxarthrosis questions the effectiveness of the capsule repair. therefore, the effect of capsule repair on stability is still controversial.

Evaluation of Proprioception in Patients With Total Hip Replacement

Coxarthrosis; Primary

Disturbances of balance and postural stability are frequent in patients with coxarthrosis due to the damage to the mechanoreceptors, characteristic of arthritic degeneration, and muscular hypotrophy of the affected limb. The aim of the study is to evaluate with adequate instrumentation the alterations of proprioception and postural control in patients with hip osteoarthrosis and the effectiveness of joint reconstruction in improving any deficit.
