Factors Predicting the Duration of Effectiveness of Viscosupplementation in Knee Arthosis

Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis is a frequent condition whose prevalence is estimated at 7.6% of the French population aged 40 to 75, or approximately 2 million individuals . Viscosupplementation (VS) is a symptomatic treatment of knee osteoarthritis recommended by a large number of learned societies. It consists of the intra-articular injection (IA) of hyaluronic acid (HA), to reduce knee pain by restoring normal joint homeostasis impaired by endogenous HA deficiency. The IA administration of HA can be performed using 2 protocols: repeated weekly injections (3, sometimes 5 injections) and single injections. To date and there is no argument to favor either protocol. Regardless of the formula used, the safety of HA is excellent (RR of adverse reaction versus saline = 1.01, 95% CI 0.96-1.07, P = 0.6). The indication for viscosupplementation is the symptomatic treatment of mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis after failure and / or intolerance of analgesics or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In this indication, after HA injection the responder rate is in the order of 70% to 75% at 6 months and approximately 50% at 12 months. However, the predictors of the duration of effectiveness of SV are still unknown. The objective of the study is to research the factors influencing the duration of the effectiveness of SV, under real life conditions.

Are Perception of Pain and Psychological Distress Before Knee Arthroplasty Associated With Reason...

Osteo Arthritis KneePsychological Distress

The aim of our study is to identify the influence of preoperative pain (NRS pain score and EQ5D pain score) and higher levels of anxiety and depression (EQ5D anxiety/depression score) and their interaction before primary total knee arthroplasty on revision surgery for unexplained symptoms after primary surgery.

A Study on the Use of Tourniquet Use In Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty

Osteo Arthritis KneeRheumatoid Arthritis of Knee

A tourniquet is often used in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) to achieve better visualization, reduce intra-operative bleeding and facilitate cement interdigitation. On the other hand, the associated risks include skin burns, soft tissue and muscle damage, injury of calcified vessels, increased swelling and stiffness of the joints, nerve injury, paralysis, and thromboembolic events. The automatic lower limb pneumatic tourniquet system (Zimmer) was applied to reduce blood loss during surgery. A prospective randomized controlled trial (RCT) was performed to investigate the best tourniquet strategy in TKA. The participants were randomly allocated to groups with different tourniquet strategies: Group 1) tourniquet inflation from skin to cement hardening (skin to cement); Group 2) tourniquet inflation only from cementation (cement only) and Group 3) tourniquet inflation from skin incision to skin closure (skin to skin). In addition to the blood loss and early postoperative outcomes, pain, soft tissue injury, and rehabilitation were also strictly monitored with a longer follow-up duration up to 6 months.

On-line Neuromuscular Exercise and Education for Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee Osteoarthritis

Due to enforced social distancing as a direct consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, many on-site health care services are unavailable. This study seeks to investigate the relative effectiveness of an alternative on-line delivery model of exercise and education compared to on-site delivery in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Effectiveness of Osteopathy in the Preoperative Treatment of Postoperative Pain in Patients Undergoing...

Total Knee ReplacementOsteoarthritis of the Knee1 more

Osteopathy is an alternative healthcare that seems effective in relieving the pain of patients. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of preoperative osteopathic care in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for osteoarthritis. The secondary objectives are to assess pain during the first postoperative month on a VAS and knee function and quality of life at 6 months and 1 year. Our hypothesis is that osteopathy will decrease postoperative pain and increase knee function.

Effects of Bracing on Knee Osteoarthritis (OA)

Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by complaints of knee pain, aching and stiffness that commonly alter the way one will climb stairs and walk reducing an individual's function and the activities they may perform on a day-to-day basis. Providing a person with a knee brace designed for OA can help unload the arthritic part of the knee, thereby reducing pain and lead to improved function. The purpose of this study is to determine if use of the Rebel Reliever knee brace manufactured by Townsend Design can reduce pain and stiffness, improve strength and balance, and enhance functional activities such as stair and level gait, and ultimately lead to increased participation in the community.
