To compare the audiological profiles in postmenopausal women with and without osteoporosis and to examine the pattern of hearing loss in osteoporotic patients. postmenopausal women will be separated as normal, osteopenic and osteoporotic according to bone mineral densitometry results. The evaluation of hearing test will be done in these groups and the results will be compared between the groups.

Sarcopenia and Osteoporosis in the Patients With Hemophilia

Hemophilia is a bleeding disorder and repeated joint bleeding leads to hemophilic arthropathy. Among patients with hemophilia, vitamin D deficiency and hemophilic arthropathy have been associated with osteoporosis in several clinical studies.There is no data on the prevalence of osteoporosis in hemophilia patients in Taiwan or Asia. To the best of our knowledge, no previous studies have reported the prevalence of sarcopenia and correlation with osteoporosis in hemophilia adult patients. This study will investigate the prevalence and corelation of sarcopenia and low BMD in patients with hemophilia. patients in Taiwan. The study will estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia and body composition in the hemophilia population and compared baseline demographic and clinical characteristics between the non-sarcopenia and sarcopenia individuals, with particular emphasis on the overlap with osteoporosis and hemophilic arthropathy.

Prevalence of Osteoporosis in Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease is the most common single-gene disease in the world. Its prevalence is increasing in France, with patients' life expectancy increasing into developed countries. It mainly affects populations originating from sub-Saharan Africa. Among the chronic bone complications associated with sickle cell disease, osteoporosis has previously been highlighted but remains a poorly known complication in this very particular context. A dedicated evaluation of osteoporosis and associated risk factors in sickle cell disease patients living in France may enable better bone management of these patients in the future, as this problem, specific to their disease, is likely to become more frequent as their life expectancy increases. This is a prospective interventional and monocentric study whose objective is to describe the prevalence of osteoporosis in black patients with sickle cell disease in France

Research on Aging Project in Iceland: Second Stage

Background: - Researchers are interested in studying the environmental and genetic factors that play a role in health and living conditions as people age. Since 2002, the U.S. National Institute on Aging and the Icelandic Heart Association Research Institute have been conducting a long-term study known as the Research in Aging project to collect personal data and samples from Icelandic men and women in order to study risk factors related to disease and disability in old age. Researchers plan to initiate a second stage of the study. Objectives: - To collect additional personal information, medical records, and blood samples from individuals who have previously provided materials for the Research in Aging Project in Iceland. Eligibility: - Individuals who have previously participated in the Research in Aging project in association with the U.S. National Institute on Aging and the Icelandic Heart Association Research Institute. Design: Participants will have a physical examination with imaging analysis procedures and hearing and eye tests, provide information on health and diet, and provide a 100-ml blood sample for testing. Participants will also provide consent for researchers to consult data and samples collected during the first stage of the Research on Aging project.

Bone Microarchitecture in Women With and Without Fracture

Osteoporosis is a common disorder of compromised bone strength causing 40-50% of women and ~25% of men to sustain fragility fractures during their lifetime. The reduction of bone strength in osteoporotic people results from loss of bone density and deterioration of bone quality. Bone quality is a complex amalgamation including macro- and micro-architecture, mineralization, turnover and damage accumulation. Currently, medications to reduce fracture risk are prescribed primarily on the basis of bone mineral density (BMD) measurement. Unfortunately, currently available BMD measurement technologies do not detect the aforementioned properties of bone quality; as such, less than half of individuals who sustain osteoporotic fractures are classified as "osteoporotic" by currently available diagnostic tools. Clearly, measures to enhance identification of those at high fracture risk are needed. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) technology, such as that provided by MicroMRI, Inc., has outstanding potential to be such a tool. Therefore, our long-term goal is to evaluate and optimize the use of HR-MRI in fracture risk prediction; this pilot work is an essential step in attaining this goal. This research will investigate 72 postmenopausal women with normal or osteopenic BMD by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), 36 with prior low-trauma fractures will be compared with 36 age-, race- and BMD matched women without fracture. We hypothesize that 1.) Women with fractures will have evidence of microarchitectural deterioration on HR-MRI and 2.) Newly developed, more rapid MRI sequences designed at the UW will provide similar trabecular microstructure information more rapidly than the currently used, albeit investigational, technology produced by MicroMRI, Inc. Our specific aims are to a) Evaluate differences in MicroMRI parameters of trabecular microstructure (bone volume fraction, trabecular thickness, surface/curve ratio and erosion index) between age-, race- and BMD-matched postmenopausal women with and without fracture; b.) Correlate T2* relaxation time (a rapid indirect MRI measure of trabecular density and microstructure) with BMD measured by DXA, and microstructural parameters measured by MicroMRI. As an exploratory aim we will investigate HR-MRI parameters of trabecular microstructure obtained using a newly developed, rapid MRI sequence referred to as IDEAL-FSE with parameters obtained using the currently available MicroMRI, Inc. sequence.
