A Study of Physical and Metabolic Abnormalities in HIV Infected and Uninfected Children and Youth...

HIV InfectionsHIV-Associated Lipodystrophy Syndrome5 more

The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence of metabolic and physical abnormalities in HIV infected (via mother-to-child transmission) and uninfected children and youth. Metabolism, body composition, bone density, and other factors will be assessed in relationship to participants' exposure to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART).

Sarcopenia And Balance In Postmenopausal Osteoporosis

OsteoporosisPostmenopausal2 more

The study was performed on 53 postmenopausal osteoporosis patients who presented to our osteoporosis outpatient clinic. Following written informed consent, patients were evaluated for sarcopenia according to the sarcopenia algorithm proposed by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP). Algorithm parameters were walking speed, muscle strength and muscle mass measurements. We used Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) for evaluation of walking speed, Jamar Hand Dynamometer for muscle strength assessment, and calf circumference for muscle mass measurement. Balances of the patients were evaluated with Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and functional skills were evaluated with the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG). Other clinical parameters (age, body mass index (BMI), 25OHvitD level, menopause age, fall within the last year, fracture history, history of fracture in mother) were questioned.

Study on the Correlation of Free Vitamin d With BMD and Fracture

Osteoporosis

According to the free hormone hypothesis, the biological activity of a hormone is carried by the portion that is not bound to protein or its carrier in circulation. Based on this, we believe that the free vitamin d, which is the proportion of Vitamin D unbound to vitamin D binding protein and albumin, performs the calcium-regulating functions of the vitamin. Hence, our objective is to study whether free vitamin correlated better with BMD and fracture than the total vitamin D.

Bisphosphonate Users Radiographic Characteristics of the Hip (BURCH) Study

OsteoporosisBone Diseases2 more

Background: - Osteoporosis is a condition where the bone becomes more brittle and more likely to break as a person ages. The drugs that people take to treat this condition have prevented many common hip fractures. But these drugs may be associated with problems in the shape and structure of the hip bone after many years of use. These changes in the hip bone may lead to an unusual kind of hip fracture. These fractures are very rare, so it is hard to study them. Researchers want to learn more about these fractures. Objectives: - To compare hip x-rays of three groups: people who have been taking osteoporosis drugs for several years, those who have just started taking them, and those who have never taken these drugs. Eligibility: People at least 50 years of age who have been taking osteoporosis drugs for at least 5 years. People at least 50 years of age who have been taking these drugs for less than 1 year. People at least 50 years of age who have never taken these drugs. Design: All participants will have three total visits over 3 years. At the first visit, those taking part will have a medical history and physical exam. They will complete a questionnaire about medication use and bone health. They will also have an x-ray of the hips and pelvis, and have a bone density scan (the kind used to test for osteoporosis) of the hips. Those in the study will repeat these exams and medical history questions at followup visits. These visits will take place 18 months and 36 months after the first study visit. At any of these visits, participants who may have a hip fracture that does not show up on the x-rays will have an imaging study to examine the bone more closely. Participants who receive a hip replacement or suffer from a broken bone at any time should inform the study researchers as soon as possible.

The Study of LTBP1 of Postmenopausal Women Osteoporosis Molecular Mechanism of Kidney Yang Deficiency...

Kidney Yang Deficiency Syndrome

Postmenopausal Osteoporosis is characterized by a decrease in bone mass as well as a deterioration of the bone architecture resulting in an increased risk of fracture, which is directly related to the lack of estrogen and also associated with a variety of genetic and acquired factors. Previous studies have found that POP molecular regulation mechanism of kidney Yang deficiency syndrome may be associated with LTBP1 gene expression. This topic using RT-PCR and Western Blot detection POP of kidney Yang deficiency group and healthy group LTBP1 mRNA and proteion's expression level, validate LTBP1 relevance to POP the kidney Yang deficiency syndrome. To provide a scientific basis for clinical treatment.

Improved Screening for Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by skeletal fragility due to decreased bone mass and deterioration of bone microarchitecture , leading to increased fracture risk for low trauma, such as spinal fractures or femoral neck . It is estimated that 3 million people are living in France , particularly women , with an incidence that increases with age . This disease is a major public health issue in terms of morbidity and mortality , costs and risk of recurrence (after a first fracture episode) , including risk factors are identified. However, although bone densitometry is a reliable diagnostic tool and preventive treatments are at our disposal, screening for osteoporosis is still insufficient . The objective of our study is to improve the detection of osteoporosis in Hospital Departmental Vendee , using a simple questionnaire seeking risk factors followed by bone densitometry or if risk factors are found. Based on the results , the patient will be sent in rheumatology consultation for implementation of treatment if necessary . Therefore included women hospitalized in medical services , gynecology, surgery and orthopedics Hospital Departmental Vendee , aged 50 to 80 years. Will not be included women who could answer a simple questionnaire and those previously treated for osteoporosis or have already received a bone density there is less than 3 years old .
