Evaluation of Potential Causes of Nap Modulated Tinnitus

TinnitusHearing Disorders2 more

The proposed research is a non-interventional study made to evaluate different measurements on 1 group of participants, before and after taking a nap, aiming to potentially guide future investigations on nap-modulated tinnitus to better understand this phenomenon. The main hypothesis is that sleep apneas could be correlated with an increase of tinnitus intensity.

Ultrasound Evaluation of Tongue Movements in Speech and Swallowing

Otorhinolaryngologic DiseaseOtorhinolaryngologic Neoplasm3 more

This study will assess the use of ultrasound-a test that uses sound waves to produce images-as a diagnostic tool for evaluating speech and swallowing. The following categories of individuals may be eligible for this study: 1) healthy volunteers between 20 and 85 years old with normal speech and hearing, 2) patients 6 to 85 years old with developmental neurological deficits in speech or swallowing, and 3) patients with tumors of the oral cavity, pharynx or larynx being treated at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Participants will undergo a 30-minute speech and oral motion evaluation, in which they imitate sounds, words and oral movements while a speech pathologist evaluates their lip, tongue and palate movements. They may also be asked to drink a small amount of water for examination of swallowing function. For the ultrasound examination, a 3/4-inch transducer (device for transmitting and receiving sound waves) is placed under the participant's chin. While the transducer is in place, the subject 1) repeats sounds and a series of syllables in several sequences, 2) swallows three times with and without a small amount of water, and 3) swallows 3 teaspoons of non-fat pudding. The ultrasound images are recorded on tape for later analysis.

Psychiatric Comorbidity

Otorhinolaryngologic Diseases

The goals of this project are aimed at the following: Identifying psychiatric comorbidity in patients presenting to the HNSCS clinic 1F and Duke Otolaryngology of Raleigh clinic using the validated assessment tool Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18) and the patient control scale. The BSI-18 is an 18 question and patient control an 8 item tool that takes about four minutes to complete. Gathering data regarding patient satisfaction in new patients to the HNSCS clinics via the CG-CAHPS visit survey. Examining relationships between psychiatric comorbidity and patient satisfaction. Examining relationships between psychiatric comorbidity and healthcare system use.

Theory Based SMS Reminders - Text's Impact on Patient Attendance

Otorhinolaryngologic DiseasesSleep Disorders1 more

The project will be done at the ear, nose and throat outpatient department at Lovisenberg Diakonale Hospital (LDS) in 2015-2016. About 12% of patients with appointments at the surgical outpatient clinic at LDS do not attend their appointment even after receiving both letters and shot message service (SMS) reminders. Persuasion theory suggests that the SMS reminders may be more effective if the text appeals more to the patient's feelings. The project is designed as a randomized controlled trial in which the control group receives the standard text that has neutral content and the intervention group receives a more emotion-based SMS reminder. The aim is to determine whether the more emotional text reduces the proportion of patients who do not show up for their scheduled appointment at the surgical outpatient clinic.

Type and Frequency of Nasal Irrigation in Rhinosinusitis Patients

Otorhinolaryngologic DiseasesRhinosinusitis

Rhinosinusitis is a common clinical problem with significant morbidity which alters patients' quality of life that has its effect on 1 out of 7 adults. It has been found that rhinosinusitis accounts for almost 26 million clinics and emergency visits per year in United states .Nasal irrigation is standard management used to treat a variety of sinonasal diseases. Furthermore, nasal irrigation decreases the need of usage other medications in rhinosinusitis .Hence, it is considered safe, inexpensive, and easy to use with no evidence of major adverse effects .Up to our knowledge, there is no clear guideline in which type (isotonic saline vs hypertonic saline) and frequency (times per day) of nasal irrigation are superior and better.

Tinnitus in Patients With and Without Sensorineural Hearing Loss

TinnitusSubjective2 more

The aim of this study is to evaluate hearing characteristics in patients with and without tinnitus using DPOAE and specific tinnitus severity index (TSI) and tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) questionnaires in both groups. Purpose of the research: Demonstrate that the characteristics of tinnitus depend on the presence and magnitude of hearing loss. Research participants: 150 patients coming for further audiological treatment due to tinnitus. Data will be collected from an electronic database that is filled in during diagnostic processing. During the diagnostic processing, TSI and THI questionnaires will be filled in, a tone audiogram (TA) and DPOAE will be performed.

Impact of Spa Treatments on the Consumption of Care in Children

Respiratory DiseaseOtorhinolaryngologic Diseases1 more

Children represent 1.2% of the spa population in France. Spa treatments, including climatic stays, are mainly prescribed for children in the context of respiratory, otorhinolaryngology and dermatological conditions. The benefits after spa treatments are the improvement of the symptoms of the pathology, the quality of life and in particular the reduction of drug exposures. Few authors have recently investigated the impact of spa treatments on the health of children and society, while care has changed significantly in recent years. Moreover, no real-life study of a large sample of children seems to have been conducted in this area. The present study plan to conduct a pharmacoepidemiology study on medico-administrative databases of the "observational study" type, in real life.
