Vestibular Implantation to Treat Adult-Onset Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction
Other Disorders of Vestibular FunctionBilateral8 moreAlthough cochlear implants can restore hearing to individuals who have lost cochlear hair cell function, there is no widely available, adequately effective treatment for individuals suffering chronic imbalance, postural instability and unsteady vision due to bilateral vestibular hypofunction. Prior research focused on ototoxic cases has demonstrated that electrical stimulation of the vestibular nerve via a chronically implanted multichannel vestibular implant can partially restore vestibular reflexes that normally maintain steady posture and vision; improve performance on objective measures of postural stability and gait; and improve patient-reported disability and health-related quality of life. This single-arm open-label study extends that research to evaluate outcomes for up to 8 individuals with non-ototoxic bilateral vestibular hypofunction, yielding a total of fifteen adults (age 22-90 years at time of enrollment) divided as equally as possible between ototoxic and non-ototoxic cases.
Vestibular Implantation in Older Adults
Other Disorders of Vestibular FunctionBilateral9 moreAlthough cochlear implants can restore hearing to individuals who have lost cochlear hair cell function, there is no widely available, adequately effective treatment for individuals suffering chronic imbalance, postural instability and unsteady vision due to bilateral vestibular hypofunction. Prior research has demonstrated that electrical stimulation of the vestibular nerve via a chronically implanted multichannel vestibular implant can partially restore vestibular reflexes that normally maintain steady posture and vision; improve performance on objective measures of postural stability and gait; and improve patient-reported disability and health-related quality of life. This single-arm open-label study extends that research to evaluate outcomes for up to fifteen older adults (age 65-90 years at time of enrollment) with ototoxic or non-ototoxic bilateral vestibular hypofunction.
Treatment of Radiation and Cisplatin Induced Toxicities With Tempol
MucositisNephrotoxicity1 moreA 10 week trial to assess the ability of Tempol to prevent and/or reduce toxicities associated with cisplatin and radiation treatment in head and neck cancer patients. Over the course of the 10 week trial, mucositis, nephrotoxicity, and ototoxicity will be monitored and assessed.
Video Game Hearing Tests for Remote Monitoring of Ototoxicity
Aminoglycoside ToxicityAminoglycoside-Induced Hearing Loss2 moreThe reason for this clinical trial is to test different ways of carrying out hearing tests to be able to detect for hearing loss within the hospital and at home. Pathway 1: The goal of this clinical trial is to learn whether video game hearing tests work well to detect hearing loss caused by antibiotics at home in patients with long-term lung infections. Pathway 2: The goal of this clinical trial is to compare tablet-based (iPad) hearing tests with formal sound booth hearing tests in patients attending hospital outpatient clinics. Pathway 3: The goal of this clinical trial is to learn whether audio-training improves listening to speech in the presence of background noise. Researchers will compare participants receiving audio-training with those who did not receive audio-training. This will test if audio-training can improve participant's everyday listening experiences.
Efficacy of Sodium Thiosulfate and Mannitol in Reducing Ototoxicity in Adult Patients Receiving...
Ototoxic Hearing LossOne common side effect of cisplatin chemotherapy is ototoxicity. The drugs sodium thiosulfate and mannitol may protect against cisplatin-induced hearing loss. Specifically, sodium thiosulfate has been found to protect the cells in the inner ear, and may therefore prevent hearing loss. Mannitol can help sodium thiosulfate enter the inner ear, and ponteially increase the effectiveness of sodium thiosulfate. This study aims to assess the efficacy of sodium thiosulfate and mannitol to reduce the hearing impairment caused by cisplatin chemotherapy.
SENS-401 to Prevent the Ototoxicity Induced by Cisplatin in Adult Subjects With a Neoplastic Disease...
Hearing Loss OtotoxicThis study is intended to evaluate the ability of SENS-401 to prevent the ototoxicity induced by cisplatin in subjects with a neoplastic disease. It is a multicenter, randomized, controlled, two-arm, open-label efficacy and safety study in adults with neoplastic disease requiring treatment with cisplatin as part of the chemotherapy protocol plan.
SPI-1005 for Prevention and Treatment of Tobramycin Induced Ototoxicity
OtotoxicityThe primary objective of this study is to determine the safety and efficacy of SPI-1005 treatment in CF patients with active pulmonary exacerbation that are receiving an IV course of tobramycin, determined by comparing hearing assessments, spirometry, Pharmacokinetic (PK), Physical Exam, Adverse Events (AEs) and Labs baseline to post-treatment. The secondary objectives of this study are to determine Pharmacogenomics and Pharmacodynamics of SPI-1005.
Intratympanic N-Acetylcysteine for Prevention of Cisplatin-induced Ototoxicity.
Ototoxic Hearing LossAlthough many intratympanic agents have been attempted, N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) appears to be the most promising and is a powerful, commonly used anti-oxidant. The goal of this prospective phase 2 randomized controlled trial is to determine the optimal dosage and effectiveness of intratympanic NAC injection in reducing hearing loss in head & neck cancer patients receiving cisplatin chemotherapy with curative intent.
Multichannel Vestibular Implant Early Feasibility Study
Other Disorders of Vestibular FunctionBilateral5 moreAlthough cochlear implants can restore hearing to individuals who have lost cochlear hair cell function, there is no adequately effective treatment for individuals suffering chronic imbalance, postural instability and unsteady vision due to loss of vestibular hair cell function. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that electrical stimulation of the vestibular nerve via a chronically implanted multichannel vestibular prosthesis can partially restore vestibular reflexes that maintain steady posture and vision. This pilot clinical feasibility study of a multichannel vestibular implant system will evaluate this approach in up to ten human subjects with bilateral vestibular deficiency due to gentamicin ototoxicity or other causes of inner ear dysfunction.
Head and Neck Cancer Survivorship Ototoxicity Screening (SOS)
Head and Neck Cancer SurvivorsCancer of the Head and Neck SurviorsTo evaluate the effectiveness, feasibility, acceptability, and appropriateness of an ototoxicity screening protocol among head and neck (H&N) cancer patients followed in survivorship clinic that received cisplatin-based chemoradiation therapy (CRT).
