RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining chemotherapy with peripheral stem cell transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase I/II trial to study the effectiveness of amifostine, carboplatin and cyclophosphamide, followed by peripheral stem cell transplantation, in treating patients with epithelial ovarian cancer or primary peritoneal cancer.

PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of carboplatin plus paclitaxel with that of carboplatin plus docetaxel in treating patients who have ovarian epithelial cancer.

It is not yet known whether receiving combined carboplatin and paclitaxel plus continued low-dose paclitaxel is more effective than carboplatin and paclitaxel alone for early-stage ovarian cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying carboplatin and paclitaxel alone too see how well they work compared to carboplatin and paclitaxel together with continued low-dose paclitaxel in treating patients with early-stage ovarian cancer.

PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of chemotherapy with or without surgery in treating patients with stage II or stage III ovarian cancer.

A supra-additive cytotoxic effect was seen when CAI and paclitaxel were given to human ovarian cancer cells sequentially in tissue culture. We have demonstrated that CAI given for 8 days followed by paclitaxel is reasonably well tolerated and that paclitaxel administration causes a dose-dependent increase in CAI plasma concentration. CAI is a cytostatic drug and continuous exposure is needed. This study will evaluate the combination of continuously administered CAI with three-weekly paclitaxel.
