Functional and Value-Added Dairy Products and Blood Glucose Control

Blood GlucoseHigh2 more

Milk proteins possess multiple biological activities including their effect on blood glucose control, satiety and energy intake. The design of functional food products with added milk protein fractions has many challenges related to their inferior sensory properties. Chocolate milk presents the universal vehicle for added milk protein fractions that might partially mask their sensory characteristics. However, commercially produced chocolate milk has a significant amount of added sugar. This project will investigate the properties of a value-added dairy product (chocolate milk with reduced sugar content) enriched with individual milk protein fractions on characteristics of blood glucose control, satiety and energy intake in young healthy adults.

Benefit of IQP-VV-102 in Reducing Postprandial Glucose Level in Overweight Caucasian Subjects

PrediabetesHyperglycemia

In this trial, the investigational product , the active ingredients which has been proven to reduce postprandial glucose in healthy and diabetic patients, will be tested. The primary aim of this clinical study is to evaluate the possibility of the investigational product to reduce the rise of postprandial glucose AUC level in overweight Caucasian subjects with normal to prediabetic biomarkers (IFG/HbA1C), without prompting a disproportionate rise in insulin levels.

Nutritive Efficacy and Safety of a Modified Infant Formula With a Reduced Protein Content and Improved...

Overweight

Formula contains significantly higher total protein concentrations than breast milk. Therefore formula-fed infants have a significantly higher total protein intake in the first few months compared to exclusively breast-fed infants. The aim is to examine the nutritive efficacy and safety of a modified infant formula with a reduced protein content and improved protein quality in a prospective, double-blind, controled, randomized study. Primary outcome measures are weight gain and growth of young infants under 12 weeks of dietary intake of the new infant formula. Metabolic effects of the qualitative and quantitative changes in the protein content of the new formula will be recorded. Two groups of healthy bottle-fed infants will be compared. The treatment group will be fed for 3 months with an infant formula with decreased protein content. At the same time the protein body of the new formula is modified by enrichment with bovine alpha-lactalbumin. A control group receives a isocaloric conventional infant formula and a protein body consisting of whey protein and casein in a ratio of 60:40, without specific accumulation of alpha-lactalbumin over the same time-period. A group of breastmilk fed infants will serve as a reference group. In regular anthropometric controls growth and thriving of the study participants is documented and compared between the different groups.

Mi Band Step Challenge to Improve Body Composition in Overweight University Students

Intervention StudyPhysical Activity

This is an eight-month research project using one group pretest-midst-posttest design. This study is based on self-efficacy and self-regulation of Social Cognitive Theory. The investigators will recruit 50 university students with a body mass index of 24 kg/m2 or above at one university campus. Participation is completely voluntary. After pretesting, a 12-week "Mi Band Step Challenge" will be launched immediately. Participants will be assessed with the validated instruments of International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ)-Taiwan short-form, Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire (SBQ), self-efficacy and self-regulation questionnaires. Mi Band activity trackers will be used to monitor step counts. An ioi 353 body composition analyzer will be used to assess body composition. Data will be analyzed using generalized estimating equation (GEE). The expected outcomes of this study include: (1) "Mi Band Step Challenge" will be developed based on the theory, which is expected to be effective. If this is true, the intervention can be packaged and applied at different types of colleges and universities with overweight students. (2) "Mi Band Step Challenge" has the potential to be used for the reference of the healthy weight - physical activity, which is embedded in the School Health Promotion Program executed by the Ministry of Education. (3) The result of this study can serve as an example for the promotion of evidence-based health care.

Effect of an Anti-ageing Supplement on Oxidative Stress

Healthy VolunteersAge Group: 60-701 more

This pilot study serves to investigate whether ProManna intake leads to any changes in baseline levels for oxidative stress markers. In addition, biomarker responses following oxidative stress challenge tests will be assessed in subjects taking ProManna versus placebo supplements.

Diabetes Prevention for Mexican Americans

Prediabetic StateOverweight and Obesity

This study tests a culturally tailored lifestyle intervention designed to prevent, or delay onset of, T2DM in Mexican Americans with prediabetes. Half the participants take part in a lifestyle program that emphasizes preparing and eating healthy Mexican American foods and increasing physical activity; the other half take part in an "enhanced" usual care control group.

Dietary HabitsGestational Diabetes2 more

The aim of this pilot study is to conduct a dietary intervention for overweight (body maas index BMI≥25) and obese (BMI≥30) pregnant women in two maternity care clinics and explore the effect of the intervention on gestational weight gain and the prevalence of gestational diabetes between the intervention and control groups.

The Healthy Elementary School of the Future

OverweightPhysical Activity4 more

Unhealthy lifestyles in early childhood are a major global health challenge. These lifestyles often persist from generation to generation and contribute to a vicious cycle of health-related and social problems. We present a study protocol that examines the effectiveness of two novel, integrated healthy school interventions. One is a full intervention called 'The Healthy Primary School of the Future', the other is a partial intervention called 'The Physical Activity School'. These intervention approaches will be compared with the regular school approach that is currently common practice in the Netherlands. The main outcome measure will be changes in children's body mass index (BMI). In addition, lifestyle behaviours, academic achievement, child well-being, socio-economic differences, and societal costs will be examined.
