Type 2 diabetes is tightly associated with overweight and obesity. Inflammatory processes are crucial triggers for insulin resistance that paves the way to type 2 diabetes. In a previous study the investigators have shown that n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids diminish adipose tissue inflammation in morbidly obese non-diabetic subjects. in this observational study the investigators will apply n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids as addition to a protein-enriched diet with low glycemic index to overweight and obese patients with insulin resistance, prediabetes and manifest type 2 diabetes over up to 6 months. Primary efficacy parameters are changes from baseline in HbA1c and body weight for for type 2 diabetes and all other patients, respectively.

Evaluation of a Family Intervention Program for the Management of Overweight or Obese Children

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of the Nereu program compared to standard care (advice on increased physical activity and nutrition) such as a health intervention tool for the childhood obesity management Methods/Design: The study design is a randomized controlled multicenter clinical trial using two types of treatment. Population and sample: Children 6 to 12 years with overweight or obesity, according to the z score of body mass index (BMI z) >= 1 for age and gender defined by International Obesity Task Force (IOTF). It is considered necessary to recruit 100 children: 50 control group (CG) and 50 Intervention (IG). Study Intervention: Nereu Group: 8 month intervention with 3 weekly training sessions doing physical exercise for children and a weekly session for parents of physical activity and healthy eating habits and behaviour strategies, that involves both parental and child participation. The control group will receive a monthly session of healthy physical and eating habits. Main Outcome Measures: Improvement of BMI z, physical activity and nutrition habits, behaviour components and quality life related to health at the end, 6 and 12 months after intervention.

Multicenter Worksite Nutrition Study

The purpose of this study is to study the potential benefits of low fat vegan diet in a randomized, controlled and multi-centered workplace setting, the investigators will enroll participants from 10 worksites of Government Employee Insurance Company (GEICO). After randomization, 5 will be the vegan sites and 5 will be the control sites for 10 month study. The vegan sites will receive low fat vegan diet instructions and weekly group sessions starting from year 1. no intervention is done to the control sites until the week 18 when the identical program will be given. At various time points, health measurements will be give to all participants.

The aim of this study focuses on obtaining accurate information on the effectiveness of interventions involving physical activity and/or nutrition education developed in the school environment. This study is intended to assist in future assembly and development of effective school practices related to preventing and reducing levels of overweight in children and adolescents. This study will examine hormonal differences in ghrelin and growth hormone in obese and normal weight adolescents and their relationship to body composition and insulin resistance. The study will also investigate the effect of the macronutrient composition of a meal on postprandial ghrelin levels and whether ghrelin responses will predict the degree of hunger and caloric intake at a subsequent meal.
