Progression of Striatal and Extrastriatal Degeneration in PD and PSP Patients

Parkinson Disease (PD)Paralysis; Supranuclear

This longitudinal study aims to research cognitive and gait phenotypes of Parkinson's disease and Supranuclear Palsy as well as to provide markers to track diseases progression using a multi-modality approach based on 3D-gait analysis and MR Imaging. Specifically, this study want to identify cognitive pattern and gait-related cerebral diffusion/functional connectivity in PD and PSP patients and to verify their progression over a period of 18 months. In summary, the current protocol proposed to investigate the following issues: to perform a multifactorial quantitative analysis of outcomes for PD and PSP compared to a control group in order to categorize cognitive and gait pattern in the group of patients and verify if the gait can be useful as discriminator for diagnosis. to analyze whether diffusion and resting-state functional connectivity indices are correlated with clinical disease severity scores and motor scores and how they change over time (18 months later).

Kick Out Parkinson's Disease 2

Parkinson Disease

The benefits of exercise for general health and well-being in older adults are well-established. Balance exercises such as tai chi and yoga, along with resistance training, can improve or maintain physical function in older adults and enhance muscle strength. Furthermore, aerobic activity is critical for maintaining and improving cardiovascular and functional health. Non-contact boxing has recently seen a surge in popularity among individuals with Parkinson's Disease (PD), with components of both aerobic and balance exercise. While participants anecdotally note improvements in stress and physical function, this has only been minimally studied. Therefore, we conducted a 10-week long pilot study of a structured karate exercise program. Among 15 participants, our pilot data highlights improvements in quality of life and high enthusiasm for the karate classes. Based on these promising results from the pilot, we are recruiting a larger, randomized group for the second phase of the karate intervention. The aim of this study is to test whether and to what degree a community-based karate class tailored for individuals with early- to middle-stage Parkinson's Disease (PD) 1) is feasible; 2) improves objective outcomes such as mobility and balance; 3) improves patient-reported outcomes compared with individuals given a standard exercise prescription for PD.

Comparing the Effectiveness of Shotokan-Karate vs. Tai Chi on Balance and Quality of Life in Parkinson's...

Parkinson Disease

The following study will be a comparison of balance and quality of life in Tai Chi training programs and Shotokan-Karate training programs in individuals with Parkinson's Disease. The following study will be a 12-week program which will assess whether or not Shotokan-Karate betters balance and quality of life even more than Tai Chi. Both Tai Chi and Karate will be taught by a professional instruction at the Sun Life Financial Movement Disorders and Rehabilitation Centre located in Waterloo, Ontario.

Validation of the Neuropsychiatric Fluctuations Scale (EFN-VALID))

Parkinson DiseaseFluctuating Mood Symptoms

Neuropsychiatric fluctuations (NF) are among the most disabling non motor fluctuations in Parkinson disease (PD). The investigators developed the NF-scale for acute assessment of non-motor neuropsychiatric fluctuations between the off- and on-medication conditions in PD. The main goal of this project is to validate the NF-scale in french language in a multicenter approach.
