Evaluating the Feasibility and Usability of Exergames in Stroke Patients With Visuo-spatial Neglect...

Hemispatial Neglect

The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and usability of newly developed exergames on exploring the hemineglected space of left neglected stroke patients. Furthermore to understand the experience of living with visuospatial neglect and to explore the users' experiences (patients and clinic staff) with those new exergames.

Interactions Between Attentional Networks and Their Influence on Perception

Hemispatial Neglect

Attention can be defined as the preparedness to rapidly and accurately respond to stimuli coming from the investigators environment and to effectively select between relevant and irrelevant information. According to a current model, visual attentional control is based on two separate groups of brain regions, so called brain networks. These networks control different attentional aspects (e.g., spatial/non-spatial attention) and they interact with each other. A disruption of these interactions can lead to attentional disorders such as hemispatial neglect. Patients with hemispatial neglect have difficulties directing their attention to the left visual field and they act as though the latter does not exist. To date, the interactions between the two attentional networks are poorly understood. The aim of this study consists in further clarifying different aspects of these interactions and their influence on visual perception in healthy participants and in patients with hemispatial neglect. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) will be the principal method applied in this study. TMS is a painless and non-invasive method, with which the activity of brain areas can be influenced temporarily. This allows us to draw conclusions regarding the functions and interactions of these brain areas. This study is designed to have a significant impact on the basic understanding of attentional control in the human brain and it can benefit the comprehension and treatment of attentional disorders, such as hemispatial neglect.

Exploratory Study About the Implementation of Technology in the Rehabilitation

StrokeParkinson Disease3 more

This qualitative study aims to identify the needs and recommendations of both patients and healthcare professionals in terms of rehabilitation technology, more specific three pre-defined user scenarios. These scenario were developed based on brainstorm sessions with healthcare professionals from the rehabilitation ward of UZ Brussel and AZ Sint-Maria Halle. The purpose of this study is to create an overview of recommendations that will be used to develop the smart devices in a later stage of the SAIRE project.

Vestibular Stimulation to Treat Hemispatial Neglect

Hemispatial NeglectStroke

The purpose of the current proposal is to pilot a new and potentially improved treatment for neglect. The procedure involves the delivery of transcutaneous small-amplitude current to the vestibular nerves that lie directly below the mastoid bones.

The Listening Project at Reiss-Davis/Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services

Auditory Perceptual DisordersStress Disorder

A research project funded by the Reiss-Davis Child Study Center of Vista Del Mar (RDCSC/VDM) will be conducted on the Vista Del Mar campus of the RDCSC/VDM to evaluate the effectiveness of the Listening Project Protocol (LPP) in children who have difficulties with autonomic and behavior regulation in the classroom. The LPP is designed as a "neural exercise" to reduce auditory hypersensitivities, to improve auditory processing of speech, and to improve behavioral state regulation. The LPP uses acoustic stimulation to exercise the neural regulation of the middle ear structures to rehabilitate and to normalize the acoustic transfer function of the middle ear structures. The current study is being conducted to evaluate efficacy and feasibility of the LPP with emotionally disturbed and learning challenged young people and will use objective measures to evaluate changes in acoustic transfer function of the middle ears structures, auditory processing skills, physiological state regulation, sensory symptoms, and academic pre and post testing.

Sleep as a Model to Understand and Manipulate Cortical Activity in Order to Promote Functional Recovery...

Hemispatial Neglect

Brain functions are supported by multiple cell types, including neuronal and non-neuronal cells that are connected into complex networks. When the connectivity between those cells is altered or disrupted, the functioning of the brain is impaired. In stroke, the interruption of blood supply to the neural circuits results in connectivity damage and permanent disabilities. Experimental evidence suggests that some types of brain state, including sleep, can protect brain tissue from stroke and "repair" the damaged circuits. This project will investigate the neuronal mechanism underlying the protective effect of sleep on brain connectivity and network activity. To this end, the investigators will use a collection of state-of-the-art technologies including high-density electroencephalography (hd-EEG), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). Perspectives include a better understanding of the causes and consequences of the perturbed electrical activity of the brain during sleep in stroke patients.

Auditory Temporal Processes in Aging

Auditory Perceptual DisordersAging Problems

Older people experience great difficulty understanding speech, especially accented English, and this problem is expected to increase with the influx of immigrants who provide services to the elderly population. The research examines the underlying factors that contribute to older listeners' difficulty understanding accented speech, including those associated with age-related hearing loss, changes in processing in auditory pathways in the brain, and general cognitive decline. The investigation also evaluates the efficacy of training strategies to improve understanding of accented English by older people. Outcomes of this research are expected to improve communication between senior citizens and those with whom they interact daily, and thereby improve quality of life for the older segment of the Nation's population.

Ketamine Challenge Study With JNJ-40411813

Perceptual DisordersConfusion1 more

The objective of this study is to investigate whether JNJ-40411813 versus placebo reduces psychosis-like symptoms, induced by infusion of a low dose of ketamine. Effects of JNJ-40411813 on ketamine-induced symptoms will be evaluated about 3 hours after a single oral dose when the concentration of JNJ-40411813 in the blood is at its maximum and up to 24 hours after dose administration to assess the duration of a potential JNJ-40411813 effect.

The Listening Project: Tuning Into Change

Auditory Perceptual DisordersStress Disorder

A research project funded by the Australian Childhood Foundation (ACF) will be conducted in Australian facilities of the ACF to evaluate the effectiveness of the Listening Project Protocol (LPP) in children with a trauma history. The current study is being conducted to evaluate efficacy and feasibility of the LPP and will use objective measures to evaluate changes in acoustic transfer function of the middle ears structures, auditory processing skills, physiological state regulation, and sensory symptoms.

Transcranial Stimulation (tDCS) and Prism Adaptation in Spatial Neglect Rehabilitation

Spatial NeglectStroke3 more

The present study aims to compare the relative therapeutic efficacy of prism adaptation therapy combined with real versus sham tDCS. The investigators will test the hypothesis that the magnitude and duration of neglect improvement will be increased when prism therapy is combined with real tDCS compared to sham tDCS. A second objective is to test whether individual differences in baseline clinical or brain imaging measures can predict: 1) neglect severity or 2) inter-individual differences in patients' therapeutic response. A third goal is to use brain imaging to characterize the patterns of neural change induced by the intervention to identify brain structures that mediate therapeutic response.
