Results From Objective Brushing Data Saved From a Powered Toothbrush Related to Values for Oral...

GingivitisPeriodontal Diseases

For this study, 213 individuals were recruited. During the Baseline examination, each participant received a powered toothbrush and was carefully instructed on how to use the toothbrush and recommended using it for at least 2 minutes every morning and evening. No restrictions were imposed on the use of other oral health products. The study lasted from June 2018 to October 2020 and included a screening, a baseline examination, and additional reexaminations at 6 and 12 months. The Oral-B application was installed on the participant's mobile phones or computer tablets. Participants were instructed verbally and in writing on transferring data from the powered toothbrush to the application. The present study aimed to investigate how the true use of the powered toothbrush, in terms of frequency and duration, affects plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), and periodontal pocket depth (PPD) ≥4 mm in a group of elderly individuals with MCI. A second aim was to compare the registered time and brush frequencies to the individual's self-estimated usage of the powered toothbrushes.

Association of Asprosin in Periodontitis and Acute Coronary Syndrome

Cardiovascular DiseasesPeriodontal Diseases

Asprosin, a recently discovered glucogenic adipokine, is mainly synthesized by white adipose tissue and released during fasting. Appetite, glucose metabolism, insulin resistance, cell apoptosis, etc. asprosin is associated with diseases such as diabetes, obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases. Periodontal tissue may act as a source of endocrine-like inflammatory mediators (such as TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1) that are important in periodontal inflammation and can affect glucose and lipid metabolism. Production of TNF-α and IL-6 in adipose tissues strengthens the relationship between cardiovascular diseases and periodontitis. Investigators postulated that asprosin may be a candidate for explaining the triangular relationship between cardiovascular and periodontal disease.

miRNAs in Periodontal Disease

Periodontal DiseasesPeriodontitis1 more

It has been stated that microRNA (miRNA) play an important role in development, homeostasis and immune functions, and abnormal miRNA expression may cause faster disease progression. The aim of this study was to determine miR-203, miR-142-3p, miR-146a, miR-146b, miR-155, miR-29b gene expressions in saliva of the patients with periodontal disease before and after non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) and to evaluate the effect of smoking on these miRNAs. A total of 90 individuals, 30 with periodontitis, 30 with gingivitis, and 30 periodontally healthy (control group), were included. These three groups were divided into subgroups as smoking and non-smoking individuals, with 15 people in each group. NSPT was applied to patients with periodontitis and gingivitis. Saliva samples and clinical parameters were taken from at baseline and repeated 6 weeks after NSPT.

Preventive Maintenance Therapy on Peri-implant Diseases

PeriimplantitisPeriodontal Disease

In the field of periodontics, periodontal support therapy has proven to be essential in preventing the incidence or recurrence of periodontal diseases. The protocol is designed according to the risk profile of a patient. For example, in the presence of the history of periodontal therapy, subgingival microbiota containing large numbers of spirochetes and mobile rods can recolonize pockets 4-8 weeks after scaling. Similarly, routine maintenance of dental implants has been recommended to prudently avoid peri-implant inflammation, Indeed, the understanding of the nature of the tissue around the implant and its pattern of disease would be important to consider, even surpassing importance. Recently, a systematic review by our group has identified the importance of maintenance therapy around implants because it can help prevent about 3 times patient-level frequency peri-implantitis. Henceforth, our primary goal was to study the influence in a cross-sectional study of the frequency of peri-implantitis patients according to their post-implant placement and corresponding prosthesis visits supportive peri-implant maintenance. As such, it will be shown: What are the local and systemic factors affecting the appearance of peri-implantitis The ideal frequency of supportive peri-implant maintenance in patients who do not develop peri-implant disease What is the population of patients who come to supportive peri-implant maintenance after placement of dental implants

Metabolic Syndrome and Periodontitis

Metabolic SyndromePeriodontal Disease1 more

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of periodontal treatment on systemic inflammation and quality of life of individuals with metabolic syndrome. There will be a randomized clinical trial with patients from the clinic of Endocrinology - Prediabetes (Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre) and outpatient dental clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), who have a diagnosis of metabolic syndrome and diagnosis of periodontitis. The clinical trial will consist of an arm where it will be immediately periodontal treatment (test group) and another arm which will be held later periodontal treatment (control group). The study will last six months , and after this period, the control group will receive the same treatment to the test group . A socio-demographic questionnaire will be applied by a trained interviewer , so that data on income, education , behavioral habits , medical and dental history . Complete periodontal examination will be conducted at 6 sites per tooth for all teeth present at baseline and 3 and 6 months after periodontal treatment . In addition to the tests required for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome , will be asked the same blood tests at 3 and 6 months after periodontal treatment (total cholesterol , LDL and HDL , fasting glucose , triglycerides , C-reactive protein). Aliquots of plasma from blood collected in each experimental point are stored at -80 ° C for analysis of interleukin- 6, Tumor Necrosis Factor- α (TNF-α) , Glucagon Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1) and adiponectin. At each clinical examination will be collected gingival crevicular fluid , supra and subgingival biofilm . Versions of the questionnaires validated in Brazil (OHIP-14)and WHOQoL Bref will be applied to assess quality of life at baseline and after 6 months of the study . The primary outcome will be change in glycated hemoglobin and secondary outcomes will be changes in serum fibrinogen and C-reactive protein. The hypothesis of this study considers that periodontal treatment can alter the serum levels of C-reactive protein, fibrinogen and glycosylated hemoglobin in patients with metabolic syndrome and thereby contribute to improved quality of life. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of periodontal treatment on systemic inflammation and quality of life of individuals with metabolic syndrome.

Menopause and Oral Health

MenopausePeriodontal Diseases

Menopause is characterized by major physiological and concomitant psychological changes. The study aimed to evaluate the association between oral health parameters, bone mineral density (BMD) and physiological or psychological symptoms in post-menopausal women (PMW), compared with regularly menstruating women (RMW). Inflammatory biomarker levels in gingival crevicular fluid, saliva, serum and determination of microbial niches in subgingival plaque samples were further aimed. The participants were asked to complete the Women's Health Questionnaire to measure emotional and physical well-being. A total of 148 women (PMW, n=76,RMW, n=72) received a comprehensive medical assessment and a full-mouth oral examination. The corresponding bone mineral density (BMD) and body mass indices (BMI) were obtained from their medical records.
