Ten healthy control subjects presented with clinically healthy periodontium. Ten patients who had plaque induced gingivitis. Ten patients who had generalized chronic periodontitis. Ten patients who had generalised aggressive periodontitis. Pentraxin-3 levels were evaluated in GCF and saliva of all subjects included in this study with ELISA technique.

Secondary, halitosis recordings were compared among subjects with chronic periodontitis, chronic generalized gingivitis and periodontal health.
Periodontitis and Coronary Heart Disease
PeriodontitisCoronary Heart Disease"Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease". The hypothesis of an infectious burden as trigger or initiator of the inflammatory process in atherosclerosis has been extensively discussed in the past years. One part of this discussion is focused on the infectious agents responsible for periodontitis. Several studies have found an association of periodontitis and/or bacteria related to this disease and atherosclerosis. However, a study focussing on the prognostic relevance of these factors is missing. The hypothesis of this study is that periodontitis is a prognostic relevant risk factor for patients with angiographically proven coronary heart disease. Furthermore, the infectious pathogen burden by PCR-detection of periodontal pathogens will be evaluated as a prognostic factor. 960 consecutive patients with angiographically proven coronary heart disease will be included in this study. After inclusion of patients an extensive periodontal examination including PCR-sampling for 11 bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivitis, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, and others) will be performed. After 12 months patient will be follow up for any major adverse events (cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke). If this study will find a relation of periodontitis or its microbiological agents to cardiovascular outcome of patients with coronary heart disease, further studies are necessary to investigate potential therapeutic consequences for patients with CHD and periodontitis.

Clinical periodontal status was determined through plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing, pocket probing depth, clinical attacment level and radiographs. Oxidative stress is known to contribute to various diseases by affecting cellular functions through the oxidation of proteins, lipids and DNA. Oxidative stress can be assessed by measuring the products of oxidative damage found in proteins, lipids and DNA or reductions in total antioxidant capacity Malondialdehyde, protein carbonyl and total antioxidant capacity levels are biomarkers of oxidative stress in gingival crevicular fluid.

Periodontal Disease Prevention Study
PeriodontitisThis study is one component of a program to improve the maintenance of good dental health and the prevention of disease by use of risk stratification methods to efficiently guide increased preventive services to adult dental patients who are at increased risk for the major dental diseases, caries and adult periodontitis. The investigators will use a retrospective cohort model to analyze a large dental claims database to determine if the frequency of preventive services influenced the periodontal disease outcomes and to determine if periodontal risk assessment information can be used to stratify dental patients into "high risk" and "low risk" categories that influence the effect of preventive services on periodontitis outcomes. Primary Objective To evaluate whether dental patients who are classified as "low risk" for periodontal disease progression, based on history of periodontitis (claims history), smoking, diabetes, and IL-1 genetic variations, have different primary and secondary endpoints if they had two dental cleanings per year compared to one cleaning per year. Secondary Objectives To evaluate whether dental patients who are classified as "high risk" for periodontal disease progression, based on a history of periodontitis, smoking, diabetes, and IL-1 genetic variations, have different primary and secondary endpoints if they had two dental cleanings per year compared to one cleaning per year. To evaluate whether dental patients who have had one dental cleaning per year have different primary and secondary endpoints if they are classified as "low risk" for periodontal disease compared to patients who are classified as "high risk." To evaluate whether dental patients who have had two dental cleaning per year have different primary and secondary endpoints if they are classified as "low risk" for periodontal disease compared to patients who are classified as "high risk."
