INtranasal OXyTocin for the Treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autism Spectrum Disorder

There is substantial evidence from animal model and healthy control data, that oxytocin is involved in the modulation of social cognition. In addition, recent genetics and plasma level studies suggest a possible role for oxytocin in the pathophysiology of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). As a large number of children with ASD are transitioning into adulthood and will likely require treatment, the lack of data to make meaningful treatment recommendations to facilitate adult living is an urgent issue. This study will examine the effect of intranasal oxytocin (IN-OXT) on social function in adults with ASD. It is hypothesized that IN-OXT will be superior to placebo in improving social function by the end of study treatment.

Intranasal Oxytocin for the Treatment of Children and Adolescents With ASD (OXY)

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Extensive data has been accumulated to suggest that central release of oxytocin is important for social cognition and function, as well as likely involved in anxiety modulation and repetitive behaviors. The principal investigators of this study have previously documented: 1) an association between Autism Spectrum Disorder and a single nuclear polymorphism of the oxytocin receptor gene, 2) ability to measure oxytocin levels in the blood by enzyme immunoassay and 3) preliminary data to support safety and efficacy of intranasal oxytocin in the treatment of social deficits and repetitive behaviors in adults with autism. A medication treatment targeting the core deficits of Autism Spectrum Disorder in childhood is highly valuable because it could influence the developmental trajectory and make further psychosocial interventions possible. In this context, we propose a small dose finding study to confirm that the dose used in the adult study is not more than the maximum tolerated dose in youth. '

ScanBrit Dietary Intervention in Autism

AutismAutism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

A growing body of research indicates that dietary intervention excluding foods containing the proteins, gluten and casein, from the diet of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may have a positive effect on behaviour and developmental outcome. In this single-blind, randomised-controlled, matched-pair adaptive trial, we introduced a gluten- and casein-free (GFCF) diet to a group of pre-pubescent children diagnosed with ASD concurrently with an abnormal urinary profile. Following random allocation to a diet or non- diet group, stage 1 of the study saw an intervention group follow the GFCF diet for eight months initially - progressing to 12 months if required. A non-diet control group continued with a normal diet. Assuming significant changes for the dietary group on the various outcome measures of behaviour and development, stage 2 of the study saw both groups assigned to GFCF dietary intervention for a further 12 months when outcome measures were again assessed at study end.

Intervention for Toddlers at Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder

This research is being done to test the effectiveness of an early intervention model for very young children at high risk for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their families. If children show improvement in this intervention, the investigators hope that the availability of public services of this type will be increased. Children between 11 months and 21 months old with Autism Spectrum Disorders, or with social and communication delays that indicate high risk for Autism Spectrum Disorders, and their parents may join the study. Treatment must start prior to the second birthday.

A Pilot Trial of a Developmental, Individual-Difference, Relationship-Bases (DIR)/Floortime for...

Autistic Spectrum Disorders

Thirty two children age 2-6 years are recruited into the study and the randomization will be stratified for chronological age and symptom severity into 2 main groups, intervention and control. The intervention group will receive an additional target treatment of DIR/Floortime parent training intervention, while the control group will continue on their routine care for 3 months. Hypothesis: Children in the intervention group show much improvement in climbing the developmental "ladder" and declining in the autistic behaviors.

Internet-based Treatment for Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder

The group of patients diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasing and so is the need for new and effective treatment methods. ASD is characterized, among other things, by difficulties in social interaction and communication. These difficulties often affects their quality of life and causes a risk of developing social anxiety or other forms of mental illness, which often leads to isolation and may cause difficulties in participating in regular face- to- face psychological treatment. Although research shows that group therapy is favorable for this group of patients, many with ASD refrain from group-treatment due to social anxiety or difficulties with public transport. In order to increase the availability of evidence based psychological treatment for these patients, it seems important to be able to offer a web-based treatment option, with the ability to participate in online group sessions. The aim of the study is to investigate whether Internet-based CBT is an effective method of improving the quality of life and sense of coherence and decreasing symtoms of anxiety and depression among adults with ASD. A randomized controlled study design will be used. Assessment will be conducted through video interviews, recruiting 84 patients with ASD and normal intellectual abilities. Symptoms of depression and other forms of psychopathology will be assessed through MINI-7 interviews. Primary outcome measures are quality of life. Participants in the intervention group receives a 18 week blended treatment combining individual ICBT delivered through a treatment platform called Stöd och Behandling (SOB) with the opportunity to participate in regular group discussions delivered through a discussion forum online. Participants in the control groups are offered self-studies through psycho educative books about ASD. Data will be collected at baseline, mid-treatment, post-treatment and after six and 12 months.
