The Effect of the Low Fodmap Diet in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autism Spectrum Disorder

This study assesses the effect of the low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAP) diet on gastrointestinal (GI) and behavioral problems in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The objectives of this study are: -To determine whether the low FODMAP diet causes a decrease in gastrointestinal problems related to ASD -To determine whether the low FODMAP diet causes a decrease in behavioral problems -To assess the effect of decreased gastrointestinal problems on reduction of behavioral problems

Weight Management Intervention for Youth and Young Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Psychotropic medications are the first-line treatment across several diagnostic categories encompassing severe mood disturbances and behavioral problems. The use of Second Generation Antipsychotics (SGAs) has increased in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the last decade. However, SGAs are associated with serious metabolic side effects in youth that include cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. This makes the public health impact of treating medication-induced metabolic disturbances almost as important as treating the mental illness itself. Improving health and reducing premature mortality in people with severe mental illness, the investigators propose to provide early weight management prevention, delivered by clinicians, for youth starting SGAs in order to target common modifiable health risk factors in the developmental process. This study will provide an urgently needed practical model for integrating weight management into academic- and community-based autism care.

Internet-based Treatment for Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder

The group of patients diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasing and so is the need for new and effective treatment methods. ASD is characterized, among other things, by difficulties in social interaction and communication. These difficulties often affects their quality of life and causes a risk of developing social anxiety or other forms of mental illness, which often leads to isolation and may cause difficulties in participating in regular face- to- face psychological treatment. Although research shows that group therapy is favorable for this group of patients, many with ASD refrain from group-treatment due to social anxiety or difficulties with public transport. In order to increase the availability of evidence based psychological treatment for these patients, it seems important to be able to offer a web-based treatment option, with the ability to participate in online group sessions. The aim of the study is to investigate whether Internet-based CBT is an effective method of improving the quality of life and sense of coherence and decreasing symtoms of anxiety and depression among adults with ASD. A randomized controlled study design will be used. Assessment will be conducted through video interviews, recruiting 84 patients with ASD and normal intellectual abilities. Symptoms of depression and other forms of psychopathology will be assessed through MINI-7 interviews. Primary outcome measures are quality of life. Participants in the intervention group receives a 18 week blended treatment combining individual ICBT delivered through a treatment platform called Stöd och Behandling (SOB) with the opportunity to participate in regular group discussions delivered through a discussion forum online. Participants in the control groups are offered self-studies through psycho educative books about ASD. Data will be collected at baseline, mid-treatment, post-treatment and after six and 12 months.

Parent Training Program for Preschool Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Previous research has showed that parent-training programs derived from the developmental individual-difference relationship-based model (DIR) could improve the communicative development of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the empirical evidence is weak. This study therefore examines whether a DIR-based parent-training program can improve children's adaptive functioning and parents' parenting skills using a rigorous randomized controlled trial design with a dose-matched control group. Forty preschool children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their parents were randomly assigned to the parent-training program group or the traditional program group at the pre-test phase. Both groups received 14-week intervention programs and were assessed using pre- and post-tests. Children's development levels and adaptive functioning were assessed by the Functional Emotional Assessment Scale (FEAS), the Chinese version of Psychoeducational Profile-third edition (CPEP-3), and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS). In addition, parents' parenting skills were assessed by the FEAS and parenting stress was evaluated by the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form.

Efficacy of Vivomixx on Behaviour and Gut Function in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder

The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of 3 months supplementation with the multi strain probiotic Vivomixx on the overall function, aberrant behaviours and frequency of gastrointestinal symptoms in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and co-morbid gastrointestinal symptoms. The investigators will also assess the effect of the intervention on parenting stress. A further issue will be to identify any predictors of response to the probiotic. Finally, the investigators will assess whether there is an association between altered behaviour and altered gut function in users of Vivomixx.

Sulforaphane for the Treatment of Young Men With Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum DisorderAutistic Disorder3 more

The aim of this randomized controlled trial is to determine if a nutritional supplement containing broccoli sprout and seed extracts, a rich source of sulforaphane, is effective in reducing core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study will also explore the safety and tolerability of a sulforaphane supplement in young men with ASD, as well as its effects on challenging neuropsychiatric symptoms that are commonly associated with ASD, such as hyperactivity, irritability, and repetitive movements.
