It may also help doctors predict a patient's response to treatment and help plan the best treatment. PURPOSE: This phase I trial is studying FLT PET imaging in patients with cancer.

Multiple Myeloma and Plasma Cell NeoplasmRATIONALE: Interferon alfa may interfere with the growth of cancer cells. Interleukin-6 may stimulate the white blood cells to kill cancer cells. Giving interferon alfa together with interleukin-6 may kill more cancer cells. PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying the side effects and how well giving interferon alfa together with interleukin-6 works in treating patients with recurrent multiple myeloma.

Multiple Myeloma and Plasma Cell NeoplasmRATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Peripheral stem cell transplantation may allow the doctor to give higher doses of chemotherapy drugs and kill more cancer cells. Colony-stimulating factors such as filgrastim and sargramostim may increase the number of immune cells found in bone marrow or peripheral blood and may help a person's immune system recover from the side effects of chemotherapy. Interferon alfa may interfere with the growth of cancer cells. It is not yet known which treatment regimen is more effective for multiple myeloma. PURPOSE: Randomized phase II trial to compare the effectiveness of filgrastim with that of sargramostim plus chemotherapy, peripheral stem cell transplantation, and interferon alfa in treating patients who have multiple myeloma.

PlasmacytomaThis project aims to propose a new approach in the treatment of solitary plasmacytoma: hypofractionated irradiation alone with stereotactic technique that may contribute to the successful treatment of this disease. This work aims to apply this new technique with the primary objective of reducing the progression-free survival for multiple myeloma of patients treated for solitary plasmacytoma, as well as quantify overall survival, local control, toxicities and quality of life in a phase I trial / II.
