RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known which combination chemotherapy regimen is most effective in treating patients with multiple myeloma. PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of various combination chemotherapy regimens in treating patients with multiple myeloma.

RATIONALE: Monoclonal antibodies can locate tumor cells and either kill them or deliver tumor-killing substances to them. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of the monoclonal antibody rituximab in treating patients with multiple myeloma that is newly diagnosed.

PURPOSE: This phase II trial is studying how well chemotherapy and peripheral stem cell transplant work in treating patients with multiple myeloma or primary systemic amyloidosis.

RATIONALE: Thalidomide may stop the growth of multiple myeloma by stopping blood flow to the cancer cells. Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop cancer cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining thalidomide with chemotherapy may kill more cancer cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of thalidomide, doxorubicin, and dexamethasone in treating patients who have untreated stage II or stage III multiple myeloma.

Multiple Myeloma and Plasma Cell Neoplasm

RATIONALE: Giving chemotherapy followed by treated T cells before a stem cell transplant stops the growth of cancer cells by stopping them from dividing or by killing them. After treatment, stem cells are collected from the patient's blood and stored. High-dose chemotherapy is given to prepare the bone marrow for the stem cell transplant. The stem cells are then returned to the patient to replace the blood-forming cells that were destroyed by the chemotherapy. PURPOSE: This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best way to give treated T cells followed by stem cell transplant in treating patients with multiple myeloma.

RATIONALE: Panobinostat and everolimus may stop the growth of cancer cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth and by blocking blood flow to the cancer. Giving panobinostat together with everolimus may kill more cancer cells. PURPOSE: This phase I trial is studying the side effects and best dose of panobinostat when given together with everolimus in treating patients with relapsed or refractory lymphoma or multiple myeloma.
