Participation in daily activities provides many opportunities for children to improve cognitive, physical and communication abilities. Children's participation in recreational and community activities and performance of self-care activities are considered key processes and outcomes for pediatric rehabilitation. Cerebral palsy (CP), which is one of the most common causes of disability in childhood, is more common in our country than in developed countries. Standardized functional assessment scales should be used to objectively measure participation in daily life activities in children with disability such as cerebral palsy. The aim of this study is to cross-culturally adapt the the Child Engagement in Daily Life Measure V2 (CEDL) to Turkish language and culture and to examine the structural validity and reliability of the Child Engagement in Daily Life Measure V2 (CEDL) in Turkish children with cerebral palsy.

Cohort of Children With Severe Cerebral Palsy

Orthopedic Complications in Cerebral Palsy

" Cohort CP " is a multicentre cohort study, initiated by the Hospices Civils de Lyon in September 2009. Population targeted are children with bilateral cerebral palsy, level GMFCS IV or V, aged from 2 to 10 years at inclusion. They are followed-up during 10 years, at the rhythm of 1 visit per year. At each visit are collected clinical, orthopaedic, radiological and environmental data. The primary objective is to establish the incidence of orthopaedic complications (scoliosis and hip joint) depending on patients' age. Secondary objectives are to describe the sequences over time of these complications and the related pain, to explore the impact of nutrition, surgery, asymmetric postures and environmental factors, and to describe the medical and rehabilitative follow-up of these patients. 385 patients are expected by the end of 2020. We expect of this long-term follow-up to gain tools that permit to improve patient's care and patient's quality of life, by putting in place preventing actions and adapted treatments related to their own pathologies.

Turkish Validity and Reliability of the Sitting Assessment Scale in Cerebral Palsy

The Sitting Assessment Scale is a valid and reliable scale that evaluates sitting balance in Cerebral Palsy (CP). The validity and reliability study of the scale has been done, but it has not been adapted to Turkish language. The aim of this study is to adapt the Sitting Evaluation Scale, which evaluates sitting balance in Cerebral Palsy, into Turkish and to examine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the scale.

Screening for Prognostic Biomarkers of Severe Bell's Palsy in Adults

Bell Palsy

Bell's palsy (idiopathic peripheral facial palsy) is the most common cause of facial palsy, which is related to the inflammation of the facial nerve, possibly induced by herpesvirus reactivation. Its first-line treatment comprises corticosteroids, antiviral therapy and physiotherapy. In most severe cases (grade IV to VI on House-Brackmann scale), facial motricity may remain altered or develop synkinesis or post-paralytic spasm, thus tremendously affecting quality of life. To avoid potential complications, surgical facial nerve decompression could be proposed. To date, however, there are no means to predict if Bell's palsy will evolve with any complications or if the patient will recover entirely. Thus, the invasive facial nerve decompression is equally proposed to subjects who will develop the consequences as well as to subjects able to restore without surgical treatment. This study proposes to search for prognostic blood biomarkers related to the Bell's palsy recovery pattern. Adult patients with severe Bell's palsy will be proposed to have a blood sampling for proteomic analysis in the early stage of the disease. Then 125 biomarkers on a Peptiquant™ kit will be analysed by mass spectrometry, and prognostic biomarkers will be selected regarding to the clinical recovery of Bell's palsy

MindEx: A Novel, Multifocal, Cognitive Brain-Machine Interface System

This research study is being done to develop a novel brain-computer interface (BCI) technology that can enable severely paralyzed individuals to interact with the world through direct brain-control of a computer. This technology is named MindEx (for Mind Extender). It utilizes four implanted "chips" in the human brain from which investigators can record brain activity during subjects' thoughts and decode meaningful information from this activity to be used as control signals for a computer, a laptop, or a tablet. The use of four brain regions is a significant differentiating feature and scientific innovation of this study over much prior work in this space, that typically derived control signals from one, or sometimes two brain regions. The brain regions to be used here can allow the decode of multiple variables simultaneously, including not just moment-to-moment position, but also high-level goals, intentions, decisions, scene comprehension, and error-related signals involved in natural human behavior. The research is being done through a prospective, longitudinal, single-arm early feasibility study to examine the safety and effectiveness of using MindEx to provide the user an intuitive, efficient, and accurate ability to control multiple applications on a computer interface such as a word processor, a paint application, or to play simple video games. Such versatility could greatly improve the autonomy and quality of life of severely paralyzed individuals. Two subjects will be enrolled, each implanted with MindEx for a period of at least 53 weeks and up to 313 weeks. The study is expected to take at least one year and up to six years in total.

Postoperative analgesia after shoulder surgery remains a challenge in patients with preexisting pulmonary pathology, as interscalene brachial plexus block (ISB), the standard nerve block for shoulder surgery, carries a prohibitive risk of hemidiaphragmatic paralysis (HDP). Although several diaphragm-sparing nerve blocks have been proposed, none seems to offer equivalent analgesia to ISB while avoiding HDP altogether. For instance, even costoclavicular blocks, which initially fulfilled both requirements, were subsequently found to result in a non-negligible 5%-incidence of HDP. In this randomized trial, the authors set out to compare ISB and combined infraclavicular block-anterior suprascapular nerve blocks (ICB-ASSNB) for patients undergoing arthroscopic shoulder surgery. The authors hypothesized that ICB-ASSNB would provide equivalent postoperative analgesia to ISB 30 minutes after shoulder surgery and therefore designed the current study as an equivalence trial.

A previous study completed in 2022 (NCT05158179) was conducted using cohorts of healthy controls, and adults with general laryngopharyngeal disorders. This study will expand on the previous research to include a separate cohort of adults being seen in clinic for an existing laryngopharyngeal disorder resulting from previous radiation or other cancer treatments.
