A Comparative Study of the Safety and Efficacy of Face Talc Slurry and Iodopovidone for Pleurodesis...
Malignant Pleural EffusionsRecurrent Pleural Effusions2 morePleurodesis is a technique used to fuse the two layers of the lining over the lung. This is done to get rid of collections of fluid or air in this space. A common reason would be cancer of the underlying lung or elsewhere causing fluid to collect in the pleural space. In this situation it is a palliative procedure to free the patient from symptoms like breathlessness.
Out Patient Talc Slurry Via Indwelling Pleural Catheter for Malignant Pleural Effusion Vs Usual...
Pleural EffusionMalignantThis is a multicentre randomised controlled trial evaluating global health related quality of life outcomes in patients with malignant pleural effusions. Patients will be randomised to receive either chest drain and talc pleurodesis or indwelling pleural catheter and talc pleurodesis. Patients will be followed up for 3 months post intervention
Respiratory Function of Dexmedetomidine in Patients Undergoing Pleuroscopy
Pleural EffusionsChronic3 moreThe primary objective of this prospective trial will be to assess the effects of dexmedetomidine administration on oxygenation and respiratory function in patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic medical thoracoscopy/pleuroscopy for a pleural effusion compared to conventional conscious sedation/monitored anesthesia care (MAC) with midazolam. The secondary endpoint of the study will be to also assess the effects of dexmedetomidine administration on respiratory mechanics and postprocedural complications
Prognostic Factors on Malignant Pleural Effusion
Pleural EffusionMalignant1 moreMalignant pleural effusion can occur in up to half of the patients with metastatic disease. It can cause shortness of breath to patients and so far there is no protocol on its management. The study is looking at patients with malignant pleural effusion and aims to identify its prognostic factors. Pleural fluid and blood analysis will be performed as in the standard of care and results will be collected at the start of diagnosis. This will not affect subsequent management plan. Patients' disease course will be followed up and progress data will be collected. Data will then be analysed to identify relevant prognostic factors.
Using Thoracic Ultrasound to Predict Pleurodesis Success in Malignant Pleural Effusions: a Pilot...
Malignant Pleural EffusionThe observational pilot study at the Churchill Hospital, funded by Oxford Respiratory Trials Unit, will assess the feasibility and efficacy of thoracic ultrasound (TUS) assessment in patients undergoing talc pleurodesis via intercostal chest drain (ICD) for recurrent symptomatic malignant pleural effusions (MPE). Participants will undergo TUS pre and post pleurodesis on up to four occasions. We hypothesise that a TUS scoring system will be able to predict short and long-term pleurodesis success earlier than current conventional medical practice allows. This study may ultimately allow the proposal of a treatment algorithm to manage patients with MPE in a more efficient manner.
Use of Guidance Videos to Increase Engagement and Decrease Anxiety in Patients Undergoing Pleural...
Pleural EffusionPleural Effusion2 morePatients planned to undergo a pleural tap will get verbal explanation or watch a personalized guidance video in addition to verbal explanation. Questionnaires will be filled to assess the effect of the video training on understanding, cooperation and anxiety.
Detection of EGFR Mutation in Malignant Pleural Effusion of Lung Cancer Patients and Cancer Cell...
NSCLC1. Detection EGFR mutation of cancer cells from malignant pleural effusion. 2. Established the cancer cell lines with without EGFR mutation from malignant pleural effusion.
Ibuprofen or Morphine in Treating Pain in Patients Undergoing Pleurodesis for Malignant Pleural...
Metastatic CancerRATIONALE: Morphine and ibuprofen help lessen pain caused by pleurodesis. It is not yet known whether one drug is more effective than the other in lessening pleurodesis-related pain or whether the size of the chest drain tube affects pain. PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is studying ibuprofen to see how well it works compared with morphine in treating pain in patients undergoing pleurodesis for malignant pleural effusion.
A Comparative Study Between Regional Anesthesia in Thoracoscopes and the Conventional General Anesthesia...
Pleural EffusionMalignant11 moreVideo-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is usually performed with general anesthesia and single lung ventilation. However, performing thoracic surgery under awake regional anesthesia has several potential advantages including avoidance of airway trauma and ventilator dependence associated with endotracheal intubation, besides promoting enhanced recovery after surgery and shorter mean hospital stay.
Identifying Early Lung Cancer Cells in Malignant Pleural Effusion Samples From Patients With Primary...
Lung CancerMetastatic CancerRATIONALE: Studying samples of pleural fluid in the laboratory from patients with lung cancer may help doctors identify early lung cancer cells. It may also help the study of lung cancer in the future. PURPOSE: This laboratory study is looking at malignant pleural effusion samples from patients with primary lung cancer to see if early lung cancer cells can be identified.
