This project aimed at analyzing and assessing of the early and late Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia(HAP) bacterial pathogens and their resistance to antimicrobial agents. The incidence of their resistance to antimicrobial agent is assessed. Included are patients hospitalized in the Intensive Care Departments of cooperated University hospitals, who developed early or late HAP. Bacterial pathogens and their resistance to antibiotics are identified using standard microbiological methods. The patient's mortality with respect to their initial antibiotic therapy is statistically analyzed.

The main objective of this study is to assess the safety of administering intravenous (IV) pentamidine for Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) prophylaxis in adult inpatients with hematologic malignancies and stem cell transplant recipients. There will also be an assessment of patient satisfaction associated with intravenous pentamidine PJP prophylactic therapy.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU) acquired pneumonia, including ventilator-associated pneumonia, is a frequently occurring health-care associated infection, which causes considerable morbidity, mortality and health care costs. Important pathogens causing ICU pneumonia are Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The epidemiology of ICU pneumonia and patient-related and contextual factors is not fully described, but is urgently needed to support the development of effective interventions.

This was a retrospective study that all teicoplanin-treated adult patients with Gram-positive infections admitted to Zhengzhou Central Hospital affiliated to Zhengzhou University from February 2015 to August 2016.

Three endotracheal tubes (ETTs) with different surfaces properties will be studied regarding formation and structure of the biofilm formed on those ETTs. Cultures from oropharynx and tracheal secretions as well as pieces of the ETT will be examined. Findings from electron microscopy (EM) and microbiology will be analyzed and compared in respect to the three materials.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of an antimicrobial stewardship program to reduce the length of stay of patients admitted to hospital with a diagnosis of pneumonia. The antimicrobial stewardship program will be implemented in several hospitals in Ontario, Canada. The program will identify patients with pneumonia, review their charts and make recommendations to their attending physicians about antibiotic management.

This study will conduct an evaluation of the World Health Partners (WHP) private provider project to see if the social franchising and telemedicine project has an impact on health outcomes in treatment vs. control areas. The evaluation will also estimate specific parameters of the WHP program that can be used to maximize financial sustainability and replicability/scalability of the program.

In a recent experimental study, the investigators showed that the growth factor Activin A is expressed in the lungs of rats with the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) at levels that are comparable with those determined in the bronchoalveolar (BAL) lavage fluid from patients with ARDS. In the same study, the administration of the Activin A inhibitor Folistatin resulted in attenuation of the histological damage of the ARDS-afflicted rat lung. The precise role of Activin A/Folistatin in acute respiratory failure associated with acute lung inflammatory pathology has not been elucidated yet. Therefore, the purpose of the present, observational study is to investigate the role of Activin A/Folistatin in respiratory failure due to ARDS and/or ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), also in relation with other biochemical markers, such as cytokines and surfactant-related proteins.

The investigators will conduct qualitative interviews of hospital personnel regarding HAI prevention practices, and use coded data from these interviews to assist in developing standardized practices.

The purpose of this research study is to gain understanding of the basic responses of the lung to inflammation and specifically if a certain medication can reduce the inflammation alone or in combination with another. Inflammation is the way our bodies react to irritation or injury, and involves red, warm, and often painful swelling of the affected tissue. "Acute lung injury" involves inflammation that is not specific to one area of the lung and is caused by any one of several conditions: infection, trauma, breathing toxic substances, etc. When lung injury is severe, not enough oxygen can get into the body; this can lead to the need for mechanical support of breathing (mechanical ventilation), problems with brain, heart or other organ function, and in some cases, death.
