UH3 Phase - Mindfulness-Based Blood Pressure Reduction (MB-BP) : Stage 2a RCT

HypertensionPrehypertension

The primary aim is to identify the impacts of a behavioral intervention called "Mindfulness-Based Blood Pressure Reduction" (MB-BP) vs. enhanced usual care on the primary self-regulation target, specifically an assay of self-related processes (Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness) (MAIA) at 6 months, via a randomized controlled trial.

Effect of Relaxing Music on Blood Pressure and Resting Heart Rate

PrehypertensionBlood Pressure1 more

Prehypertention is defined as systolic blood pressure between 120 and 139 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure between 80 and 89 mmHg. People with prehypertension have the higher risk to develop hypertension compared to people with normal blood pressure (normotensive) especially when getting old, therefore prehypertension is known for preliminary stage of hypertension. Framingham Heart Study have shown the progression rate from prehypertension to hypertension was as high as 19% over 4 years. Prehypertension will also lead to abnormality of the cardiovascular system. Thus it is very important to identify the prehypertension at early stage, so that steps can be taken to slow down the progression to hypertension and to normalize the blood pressure level. Minimal reduction in blood pressure produce a large benefit to human health, as stated in JNC (Joint National Committee) VII report, a 5mmHg decrease in systolic blood pressure would be able to reduce as much as 9% mortality rate caused by coronary heart disease, 14% mortality related to stroke, and 7% decrease in all-cause mortality. Previous studies have focused on effect of music therapy in hypertensive elderly, prehypertensive pregnant women, prehypertensive elderly but no research has been conducted on prehypertensive young adults. In addition, prehypertension increase risk of developing cardiovascular disease, thus early intervention is needed to prevent the progression of prehypertension to hypertension status and normalize the blood pressure level.

Mindfulness-Based Blood Pressure Reduction (MB-BP) Intervention Development - Stage 1 Single Arm...

PrehypertensionHypertension

Specific aims are: To outline and evaluate key active elements of the Mindfulness-Based Blood Pressure Reduction (MB-BP) intervention. This aim will be achieved using (a) focus groups of participants undergoing the MB-BP intervention, (b) discussion with experts (including cardiologists, epidemiologists, mindfulness experts, mindfulness intervention instructors) prior to, and following pilot testing of MBHT in participants, and (c) clinical judgment of the investigators performing the intervention. To evaluate impacts of MB-BP on target engagement (pre-post change in effect size) and longevity of target engagement (follow-up time-points). Follow-up time periods include 10 weeks, 6 months and 1 year. This study is a prospective single-arm trial during the intervention development phase. Following this phase, after the intervention has been further developed, a subsequent study (with a different clinicaltrials.gov identification #) will utilize a randomized control trial design to further evaluate causation and effect size.

The Effect of Grape Seed Extract on Blood Pressure in People With Pre-Hypertension

Hypertension

In this research study, the investigators are interested in learning how extracts from grape seeds can help those individuals with high blood pressure. The investigators also hope to learn how grape seed extract effects your blood and cell functions. The grape seed extract the investigators will use in the study will be provided either in a beverage or a capsule form and is currently available on the market. This study is also using a placebo; therefore the treatment subjects receive may or may not contain the grape seed extract. The purpose of this study is to determine if the grape seed extract (GSE) will lower blood pressure in people with slightly high blood pressure (Pre-Hypertension).

Salt Reduction on Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Organ Damage

Hypertension

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of a modest reduction in salt intake on blood pressure in white, black and Asian individuals with hypertension or prehypertension, and also to determine whether a modest reduction in salt intake has beneficial effects on the surrogate markers of target organ damage in cardiovascular disease.

Destiffening and Hypotensive Effects of Whole Milk and Full-fat Dairy Products

HypertensionPrehypertension

The specific aim of the proposed study is to address the efficacy of conventional full-fat dairy products as part of the normal routine diet for improving vascular function and reducing blood pressure in middle-aged and older adults with elevated blood pressure. The investigators hypothesize that dietary intervention including whole milk and full-fat milk products will induce significant decreases in systolic blood pressure and arterial stiffness. The investigators also test the hypothesis that the reductions in blood pressure will be associated with the corresponding decreases in arterial stiffness and/or increases in endothelial vasodilatory function as well as improvements in arterial baroreflex sensitivity. If our hypotheses are supported by the results, the information could be used as a basis for recommendations for the use of whole milk and full-fat milk products in the secondary prevention of elevated blood pressure and vascular dysfunction.
