Effects of Nitrate in Vegetables on Blood Pressure in Subjects With Prehypertension

HypertensionCardiovascular Disease

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of different vegetables on cardiovascular function in subjects with moderately increased blood pressure. Specifically we are comparing the effects of vegetables with a high natural content of inorganic nitrate with those of vegetables with a low nitrate content.

Autonomic and Hemodynamic Responses to Inspiratory Muscle Exercise in Pre Hypertensive and Hypertensive...

PrehypertensionHypertension

This study aims to evaluate the autonomic and hemodynamic responses triggered by inspiratory muscle exercise in prehypertensive and hypertensive individuals. The reason that leads us to this study refers to clinical relevance for individuals with high blood pressure levels, since this type of exercise can act as a important nonpharmacological agent for arterial pressure control. In addition, this study aims to elucidate the mechanisms involved in cardiovascular responses to inspiratory muscle exercise and, consequently, provide safety in the prescription of these for this population.

Health Effects of a Nordic Diet Rich in Plant-based Foods and Fish

PrehypertensionHypertension

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of a Nordic diet rich in plant-based foods and fish on indicators of cardiovascular disease risk at two different levels of salt intake. The study is a 20-wk randomized controlled crossover trial. The subjects follow a salt-restricted diet during the study. The study begins with a 4-wk run-in phase for all subjects. After that the subjects are randomly allocated to one of two groups. Group 1 consumes a healthy Nordic low-salt diet enriched with plant-based foods and fish for 16 weeks. Group 2 consumes a low-salt diet for 16 weeks. During the 16 weeks, both groups receive salt and placebo capsules in a double-blind, crossover fashion (8+8 weeks).

Modifying Dietary Behavior in Adolescents With Elevated Blood Pressure

HypertensionPre-Hypertension

The purpose of this study is to examine the long term effects of a 24-week clinically-based behavioral nutrition intervention emphasizing the DASH diet compared to routine nutrition care on changing diet quality, blood pressure, hypertension status, and vascular function in adolescents with elevated blood pressure.

Korean Life-Style Modification Effects on Blood Pressure

PrehypertensionHypertension

In hypertension, lifestyle modification has been proven to be effective in reducing blood pressure while decreasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. The dietary approaches to stop hypertension(DASH) diet, sodium restriction and exercise has been shown to reduce systolic blood pressure by 8-14mmHg, 2-8mmHg and 4-9mmHg, respectively. The DASH-sodium diet has been shown to have additional systolic blood pressure lowering effect of 7.2mmHg, which is equal to adding one antihypertensive drug. However, as the dietary pattern is different in the Korean population, the investigators cannot implement the data from Western countries directly to the Korean population. For example, the consumption of dairy products is much smaller in the Korean population when compared to the western population. Therefore, the effectiveness of DASH-sodium diet and exercise on blood pressure lowering in the Korean population is not well defined. In this study, the investigators sought to determine the effectiveness of the DASH-salt diet and DASH-salt diet plus exercise on brachial blood pressure lowering. The study will be performed on untreated prehypertension patients and uncontrolled hypertensive patients undergoing anti hypertensive treatment with blood pressure measured between 140-159mmHg/90-99mmHg at the time of enrollment.

Study of Febuxostat Effect on Blood Pressure in Patients With High Normal Blood Pressure

PrehypertensionGout3 more

High normal blood pressure, also called prehypertension, is a significant problem. High uric acid in the blood, the same thing that causes gout, may cause higher blood pressures. The investigators plan to monitor the effects of the drug febuxostat(trade name Uloric) on blood pressure and stiffness of the main blood vessels and see if lowering uric acid has any effect.

Mindfulness-Based Blood Pressure Reduction: Stage 2a RCT

HypertensionPrehypertension

The primary aim is to evaluate impacts of a behavioral intervention called "Mindfulness-Based Blood Pressure Reduction" (MB-BP) vs. enhanced usual care control on systolic blood pressure at 6 months, via a randomized controlled trial.

The Effect of Soursop Supplementation on Blood Pressure, Serum Uric Acid and Kidney Function in...

Blood PressurePrehypertension1 more

This study was a randomized controlled trial study. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of soursop fruit supplementation on blood pressure (BP), serum uric acid (SUA), and kidney function. The definition of prehypertension and hypertension was accepted as delivered in The Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee (JNC 7) as the systolic BP was 120 - 139 mmHg and diastolic BP was 80 - 89 mmHg for prehypertension, while systolic BP ≥ 140 mmHg or diastolic BP ≥ 90 mmHg for hypertension. Based on the study by Sja'bani (2014), the cut-off point of (SUA) was divided into 3 categories, which are normal (< 5 mg/dL), high-normal (5 - <7 mg/dL), and high (≥ 7 mg/dL). A number of 143 people with essential prehypertension and high normal uric acid level were assigned as subject in this study. Subjects were randomly assigned into two groups which are treatment and control group. For a 3 months period, the treatment group was given 2x100 g soursop fruit juice per day and the control group was left without treatment. Blood pressure was measured by medical team using Omron HEM-907 (digital automatic blood pressure monitoring) every 2 weeks (3 times readings for each) in each subject's home. Subjects were examined in sitting position. Evaluation of laboratory examination was taken at week 0, 7 and 13.
