Enhancing the Vagal Tone in Prediabetes Individuals

PrediabetesAutonomic Nervous System Imbalance2 more

This is a 2-year course of study. A randomized control trial will be conducted, in which 90 prediabetes individuals will be recruited and randomly assigned them into the wait-list control group or experimental group to test the effectiveness of 8 once-a-week, individual, 20-min sessions of HRV biofeedback on modulating vagal tone, glycemic control, psychological wellbeing, and inflammatory status in this population. Its longitudinal effects will be evaluated after 3- and 6-month follow-up.

Milk Protein Feeding After Aerobic Exercise in Older Adults With Pre-diabetes Taking the Biguanide...

Physical Activity

The investigators propose that post-exercise milk protein feeding will enhance the mitochondrial protein synthesis (biogenesis) response to an exercise-training program. In addition, the investigators propose that this stimulatory effect of protein feeding will overcome the potential blunting effect of metformin on exercise responses. The investigators will investigate these outcomes over a 12-week exercise-training program in older adults with pre-diabetes with or without metformin treatment.

Replacing Refined Carbohydrates With Healthy Fats on Cardio-metabolic Markers

Pre-diabetesMetabolic Syndrome

The primary goal is to to characterize the effects of consuming 1 avocado fruit 7 days / week (5-7 days is acceptable) compared to a no avocado relatively low fat, carbohydrate control treatment over a 12 week period on insulin sensitivity as measured by the Matsuda composite index of insulin sensitivity (MISI).

Medium Chain Triglycerides and Aerobic Exercise on Ketone Production in Women With or Without Prediabetes...

Prediabetic State

The aim of this study is to compare the effect on ketone production of dietary an MCT supplement combined or not with physical exercise in two groups of women (N=10/group), healthy adults and patients with prediabetes. After an evaluation of the metabolism (a 4-hour visit with multiple blood samples) at the beginning of the study, all the participants are taken for one-week the MCT supplement alone follow by a one-week period of taking the MCT supplement in combination with physical exercise. At the end of each period of time, the 4-hour visit for the evaluation of the metabolism is repeated.

Glycemic Effects of Honey

Pre-diabetes

Honey has been used as a sweetener for centuries. Recent data indicate that honey consumption may have beneficial effects upon glucose intolerance, a health issue currently affecting 57 million Americans of every age and ethnicity. In order to evaluate the glycemic effect of honey, the investigators will carry out a human trial assessing biomarkers of blood glucose responses, insulin sensitivity, oxidative stress, and inflammatory markers. Our primary objective is to determine the glycemic effects of honey in comparison to sucrose and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). The investigators hypothesize that honey will promote improved glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity compared to both sucrose and high fructose corn syrup in normal glycemic and glucose intolerant adults.

Trial of an Herb and Mineral Combination Product on Fasting Glucose in Adults at Risk for Developing...

Prediabetes

This is a multi-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in approximately 104 subjects (52 per group) to evaluate the effectiveness of an herb and mineral combination product on fasting serum glucose levels in subjects with impaired fasting glucose. The study consists of 5 visits: a Screening visit, followed by a Baseline visit (at which eligible subjects will be randomized to product to consume throughout the 12-week supplementation period), followed by Supplementation period visits at 3, 6 and 12 weeks after baseline.

Dietary Effects on Circulating Lipoprotein-associated Phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) Activity and Enzyme...

Impaired Fasting GlucoseNewly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes

We determined the effects of dietary intervention (replacement of refined rice with whole grains and legumes and a high intake of vegetables) on circulating Lp-PLA2 activity and enzyme activity in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in patients with impaired fasting glucose (IFG), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes.

The Effect of Aliskiren on Endothelial Function in Pre-Diabetes and Diabetes

Diabetes Type 2

The purpose of this research is to study and determine the effects of Aliskiren on blood vessels and blood flow. The primary hypothesis is that Aliskiren will increase endothelial function by 30% or more in comparison to the placebo group.
