The purpose of this study was to show that the eye pressure measurements made with iCare® Home by patients / relatives do not vary more than those made with the standard method, Goldman applanation tonometry (GAT), by different healthcare professionals. This will hopefully confirm the usefulness of self-tonometry.

The investigators want to evaluate the impact that self-tonometry results have on the clinician's choice of glaucoma treatment. The investigators also want to evaluate how often pressure peaks occur outside the clinic's opening hours.

Pseudoexfoliation SyndromeThe purpose of the study was to evaluate optical ocular components in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome using optical low coherence reflectometry. A prospective cohort study of 224 eyes of patients planned for cataract surgery was conducted from January 2009 until July 2009. Patients were divided in two groups: the first group of 47 eyes with cataract complicated with pseudoexfoliation syndrome and the control group of 177 eyes with uncomplicated cataract. Each group was further divided into two subgroups based on its refractive state: emmetropes and hypermetropes. The optical low coherence reflectometry biometer LENSTAR® LS 900® was used to define ocular optical components.

The study also analyses sub group of OSD prevalence, stratified according to the treatment types (i.e. preserved, preservative-free, and combination of preservative-free and preserved eyedrops), and illustrates the patient perspective on OSD.

Cataract With Exfoliation SyndromeThe purpose of this study is to examine the efficacy of a capsular tension ring (CTR) in preventing anterior capsule shrinkage after cataract surgery in exfoliation syndrome (XFS) with no zonular weakness. The eyes with XFS undergo phacoemulsification and aspiration (PEA) with an intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. All operations are performed by a single surgeon. No eyes with either ectopia lentis or phacodonesis are included. There are three groups; CTR is not used in group A, CTR is simply implanted in group B, and CTR is implanted and closed by tying both eyelets in group C. The areas of continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (CCC) are calculated, and both the time-course change and the comparison among the 3 groups are tested.

It is frequently associated with open angle glaucoma, known as pseudoexfoliation glaucoma, which is one of the most common identifiable forms of secondary open angle glaucoma worldwide. Despite extensive research, the exactchemical nature of the fibrillar material is unknown. It is believed to be secreted multifocally in the iris pigment epithelium, the ciliary epithelium, and the peripheral anterior lens epithelium.

Marfan's Syndrome With Ocular ManifestationsPseudoexfoliation Syndrome3 moreThe crystalline lens of the human eye helps to sharpen vision. There can be issues with the support/stability of the lens. This could be seen with the naked eye of an external observer or with the use of a slit lamp. Certain eye conditions can predispose to issues with lens stability. If patients have stability issues with their natural lens- this would be termed as "phakodonesis". However, in patients who have had prior cataract surgery with implantation of an artificial lens (IOL)- this would be termed as "pseudophakodonesis". Eye conditions such as pseudoexfoliation or Marfan-syndrome can lead to unstable lens support- this can be detected if there are advanced stability issues. However, small instability in the eye's would not be detected with present descriptive methods. The authors have designed a high-speed camera which is able to detect stability of the lens, especially during eye movements. The high-speed camera can detect variation in the change of light reflex from the lens and calculate the amount of lens instability/oscillation. The results (in normal eyes) of this high-speed camera has already been published in a peer-review journal. It is non-contact and measures lens movement. The test lasts less than 5 minutes. Further research is required to assess the amount of lens oscillation (wobbling) in different eye populations - patients with previous cataract surgery (an artificial implant is used to replace the lens) or eye conditions (such as pseudoexfoliation, Marfan syndrome). The amount of lens stability has a role in the planning of further intraocular surgery - especially cataract extraction - however, at present, there is no approved quantitative measurement for this. Participants will be recruited through Anglia Ruskin University (educational establishment), local community groups, and through Southend University Hospital eye clinics (NHS organisation). Participants' data will remain anonymous.
