Psychotraumatology in Somatic Medicine
TraumaPsychological; SomaticPsychotraumatology is clinically highly relevant, especially in the medical-somatic disciplines. Despite progress in recent decades, the clinical care is still inadequate - with unfavorable health effects for affected patients. There are avoidable burdens for involved clinicians and the health care system as a whole, also in terms of costs. With this background, our long-term project combines different research levels. Besides clarifying the clinical phenomenon, it aims to examine 1) the influence of traumatization on the physician-patient interaction as well as 2) the current psychological stress of the patients. Furthermore, 3) moderating factors on the side of the physicians, such as professional experience on the physician-patient interaction will be examined.
EMDR Pre-treatment Yoga for Complex Trauma
TraumaPsychologicalYoga practice has shown benefits in treating multiple physical or mental disorders (Barnes, Bloom, & Nahin, 2008; Khalsa, 2004; Ross, Friedmann, Bevans, & Thomas, 2013) and has recently been evaluated for PTSD. We identified six randomized controlled studies measuring the effect of yoga in women (mostly) who experienced childhood violence (see table). With the exception of one pilot study (Dick, Niles, Street, Dimartino, & Mitchell, 2014; Mitchell et al., 2014), all studies show a significant reduction in PTSD symptoms compared to the pre-treatment period and compared to the control group (waiting list group). In particular, it was shown that this reduction in symptomatology was comparable to that of other commonly practiced psychotherapies, such as the exposure techniques of Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies or EMDR, and comparable to pharmacological treatments (Van Der Kolk et al., 2014). Prolonged yoga therapy would also significantly improve dissociative symptoms (Price et al., 2017). However, all these studies tested the effect of yoga therapy in isolation, without associating it with conventional and recommended treatments for trauma. However, given the fields of action of the yoga listed above, we think that it could be the ideal tool to prepare (in the pre-treatment phase) the work on traumatic memory. We believe that the combination of yoga therapy and EMDR would work in synergy to reduce complex PTSD and achieve a higher success rate than these individual approaches. In this work, we will use a yoga technique adapted to the treatment of psycho-trauma called "trauma sensitive yoga" (Emerson, 2015).
Emergency Psychological Intervention With Children: Alex Storm
Psychological TraumaAlex storm hits France, especially the French Riviera, from September 30, 2020 to October 3, 2020. A lot of people have been impacted by this event. Among these people, 116 children have been taking care by the medico-psychological emergency unit and have been assessed by child psychiatrists or by psychologists.
Psychological Trauma and Resilience After Critical Illness
Acute Respiratory FailureShockCritically ill patients experience a severe physical disease, associated with a psychotrauma, which may lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (17 to 30% of patients after critical illness) and persistent symptoms of anxiety and depression. RESIREA study will study psychodrama, resilience and factors associated with resilience in patients previously included in the NUTRIREA-3 randomized controlled trial designed to compare standard calorie and protein feeding complying with guidelines to low-calorie low-protein feeding in a well-defined group of severely ill ICU patients requiring at least MV and vasoactive drugs.
Therapeutic Termination of Pregnancy and Psychiatric Implications
Therapeutic Abortion With ComplicationsPersonality Disorders6 more25 parental couples, with a prenatal diagnosis of fetal abnormality, had psychiatric evaluation for eligibility before TToP and after one year from the procedure. Women and unborn's fathers were also subjected to different psychometric questionnaires (HAM-D, HAM-A, BDI-II, PCL-5, IPDS, CTQ, CD-RISC-10).
Prevalence of Traumatic Events and PTSD in Immigrant and Non-immigrant Patients With Psychotic Disorder...
Psychotic DisordersPsychological Trauma3 moreHigher rates of psychosis are described in migrant population. Likewise, this populations could suffer several adversities during migration process that could lead to higher exposure to traumatic events and higher rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There is a growing evidence that trauma is associated with psychosis onset. The aim of this research is to study the association between psychosis and traumatic events exposure/PTSD in immigrant population. Our hypothesis is that the higher incidence of psychosis described in immigrant population is associated to higher trauma exposure. A case-control observational study is performed. Patients who presented at least one psychotic episode are recruited from acute and chronic units at "Parc Salut Mar" (Barcelona). Estimated total sample is 196 individuals. Trauma exposure is assessed by validated trauma scales. Known factors associated with psychosis are controled during the statistic analysis.
Improvement of the Diagnosis and Medico-legal Management of Psychological Trauma in Patients Involved...
Registration of a Complaint Following the Terrorist Attack of 14 July 2016Psychological trauma is a major public health concern that affects numerous patients who have experienced traumatic events. The objective of our research was to improve the diagnosis and management of persons experiencing such events. We will seek to determine factors brought into play in the construction of psychological trauma and the best way to identify them so as to implement the optimal management of patients and ensure recognition of this condition. In addition, in the context of our activity as expert witnesses, we will study the methods used to assess and quantify psychological trauma. In this respect, a medical appointment will be made by a nurse of the Forensic Medicine Department of Dijon CHU. During this consultation, a self-report questionnaire will be completed by the patient alone to evaluate the level of acute stress followed by a psychiatric consultation and completion of the IES-R questionnaire with the doctor to identify symptoms of psychological trauma.
Improving Mental Health Following Early PREgnancy Loss Using a Brief Cognitive Task
Post-traumatic Stress DisorderMiscarriage4 moreThis is a randomised controlled trial designed to investigate the impact of a brief-cognitive task based intervention on intrusive memories, mental health symptoms and daily functioning, in women following an early pregnancy loss.
Psychological Factors in Acne: A Focus on Psychological Trauma
Acne VulgarisThis cross sectional questionnaire based study will aim at exploring psychological factors at play in the experience of acne, and their association with perceived and clinical severity. We will focus in particular on the role of psychological trauma in the patients with acne and their wellness. This project is being undertaken as part of a wider developing initiative in the Dermatology Department within NHS Tayside, which aims at identifying and consequently addressing the psychological needs of their patients. Participants will be consecutive patients with acne aged at least 18 years old, seen in the outpatient clinics of the Dermatology Department in NHS Tayside. Potential participants will be informed about the research by their clinician during an outpatients appointment and if interested, given an information sheet and consent form to review. Verbal consent will be sought by the clinician to give the potential participant's contact details to the Chief Investigator (CI)/Research Assistant (RA). If agreeable, the CI/RA will contact the potential participant after at least 24 hours to arrange a mutually agreed time for meeting. If the potential participant are still keen to participate and has read the information sheet, fit our inclusion criteria, are not deemed to be distressed by their attending clinician and want to take part, they will be included. Participants will complete a number of standardised questionnaires and a demographics information sheet in the outpatients' clinic with the CI/RA present. The questionnaires include questions on psychological trauma history and symptomatology, general psychological distress, appearance related distress and perceived severity of condition. Clinical severity of their acne will be obtained from patient files after questionnaire completion by NHS staff. Participants will also be given a debrief letter and additional forms of support and information to take home with them. Participants will not be contacted for follow-up.
