Promoting Resiliency in Veteran Families With Young Children
StressPsychological11 moreFamily-centered prevention services for civilian dwelling military (CDM) families & children are rarely available in civilian communities or often framed around mental disorders and family deficits. As of June 2010, over 1 million military service members from various military conflicts have become veterans. Wartime deployments can adversely impact the psychological health of children as well as marital relationships, parent-child relationships & overall family functioning. Although young children in CDM families may never have to cope with another parental deployment, their families may continue to struggle with the lasting effects of wartime deployment that cannot be ameliorated by singularly treating the service member. There is a need for family-centered preventive interventions that effectively build resilience and mitigate war deployment-related family difficulties, especially given the potential adverse emotional & developmental impact of deployment separations and reintegration stress on young children and their parents. To address this need, this study proposes to test the efficacy of FOCUS-EC (Families OverComing Under Stress for Early Childhood), an established strength-based, family-centered preventive intervention that is culturally sensitive and socially accepted by active duty military communities & has promising program evaluation data. A randomized control trial will be conducted with 200 CDM families with young children, ages 3 to 5 years, recruited from Los Angeles & surrounding counties (200 veterans, 150 spouses, and 300 children). CDM families will be randomized to the FOCUS-EC intervention condition (n=100 families; 100 veterans, 75 spouses, 150 children) or web-based educational materials condition (n=100 families; 100 veterans, 75 spouses, and 150 children) and assessed at baseline, 3, 6, & 12 months. It is hypothesized that in the FOCUS-EC condition: 1) children will exhibit more positive social-emotional & behavioral outcomes & developmental competencies than children in the comparison condition, 2) families will exhibit more positive family environment, improved parenting, enhanced parent-child relationships, & fewer parent psychological health problems than families in the comparison condition. The investigators also aim to explore potential moderating effects of child health/development risk, military & deployment/separation history, exposure to combat/trauma during deployment, and veteran & spouse/partner background factors.
EMDR Intervention for Psychological Trauma Among Syrian Refugees
Psychological TraumaTo implement an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)intervention to treat the trauma symptoms among Syrian Refugees.
Extension of EMDR vs. PC For Motor Vehicle Accident Trauma
TraumaPsychological1 moreThis is an extension of a randomized clinical trial comparing eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) to progressive counting (PC) for volunteers from the community who are distressed by the memory of a motor vehicle accident. The purpose of this extension is to add Phil Manfield's recently developed Flash technique as a precursor to both EMDR and PC, to see a) if that has any impact on participant retention, treatment effectiveness, or treatment efficiency; and b) if such impact is equivalent with EMDR and PC.
Flash Open Trial With Therapists In Training
TraumaPsychologicalThis study will test the eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) based Flash technique and a progressive counting (PC) based variant. EMDR-trained therapists will be trained in the standard Flash, and PC-trained therapists will be trained in PC Flash. In each group they will try it with a minor upsetting memory, and then with two more significant upsetting memories. Participants will use the subjective units of distress scale (SUDS) to rate distress pre- and post-treatment.
EMDR vs. PC For Motor Vehicle Accident Trauma
TraumaPsychological1 moreThis is a randomized clinical trial comparing eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) to progressive counting (PC) for volunteers from the community who are distressed by the memory of a motor vehicle accident. Participants will be assigned to the geographically nearest therapist, and then randomized to treatment condition.
HIV Prevention and Care of Psychological Trauma in Vulnerable Rwandan Youth
Acquired Immunodeficiency SyndromeStress Disorders1 moreThe investigators propose a prospective single arm pilot cohort study of 100 youth (ages 15-25) to evaluate the feasibility of this project. A convenience sample of subjects will be enrolled on a voluntary basis from those who come to the day care center located in Nyanza, a district of the Southern province, in Rwanda.
Prevalence of the Traumatic Events in Women With Fibromyalgia
FibromyalgiaPsychological Trauma5 moreSuffering a traumatic event is a potential risk factor for developing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with or without comorbidities with other pathologies that can become chronic with time, including fibromyalgia. Different study results show the existence of an association between living traumatic events and developing fibromyalgia. However, studies in the field have not evaluated thoroughly the nature of traumatic events, the subsequent development of PTSD and the degree to which it can cause an impairment. These results will allow us increase the knowledge about the effects of comorbidity between both medical conditions, get to know in depth the type of traumatic events that female patients with FM suffer, and express the importance of the implementation of a therapeutic approach which takes into account the existing psychological symptoms in addition to the main principal pathology.
Psychometric and Patholinguistic Assessment of Psychotrauma Related to Natural Hazards in the Commune...
Psychological TraumaPosttraumatic Stress Disorder PTSD1 moreThe project is to study the evolution of mental health in a little town of the French Martinique (Le Prêcheur) by using an innovative method of analysis that combines patholinguistic and psychometric indications for patients who risk of developing psychotrauma due to a natural hazard. Investigators will gather precise and factual data concerning the psychic and mental state of the population, by collecting patients' feelings and sentiments through individual interviews and audio recordings that will be then transcribed, and analyzed, and repeated, according to a quantitative, qualitative, and prospective methodology. This research is launched in order to meet the needs expressed both by the French authorities and the population towards an optimization of crisis management.
CFT Self-Help for Accessing Cervical Screening After Sexual Assault
TraumaPsychological2 moreThe aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of a new self-help intervention designed to support individuals (anyone with a cervix) to access cervical cancer screening following the experience of sexual assault, by addressing psychological barriers identified by previous research, specifically shame, low self-efficacy and the re-traumatising nature of attending to sexual health after sexual trauma.
R34 Family Navigator Enhancing Early Engagement
Mental Health IssueTrauma1 moreFor the current study, the investigators will develop, implement, and evaluate web-based and consultative training for Family Advocates employed at Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) across the United States to enhance children's early engagement in evidence-based mental health treatment. The interactive web-based training will embed key targets of knowledge and skills related to family engagement, trauma, evidence-based practices (EBP), and EBP services in the community. Seventy-five CACs who apply to participate in training will be randomized to a webinar-only training group, a webinar plus consultation training group, and a delayed (waitlist) control group. It is hypothesized that the Family Advocates and CAC Directors will report high levels of satisfaction with the training. More importantly, it is also hypothesized that webinar training will improve Family Advocates' knowledge, resulting in minor improvement in EBP engagement, while the addition of consultation in the second training group will lead to increased use of engagement skills, thereby resulting in greater improvement in family engagement in EBP.
