Exercise Induced Laryngeal Obstruction (EILO)This study aimed to assess if a multidimensional individually tailored intervention, including Norwegian Psychomotor Physiotherapy (NPMP), elements of cognitive behavioural therapy and a rehabilitation plan, helped reduce inspiratory distress and dysfunctional breathing in adolescent athletes with EILO. A mixed methods design, which combined qualitative and quantitative research, was used. Data, including subjective experiences of respiratory distress, findings from NPMP body examinations and objective measurements of lung function and aerobic capacity were gathered before and after a five month intervention involving 18 participants.

Sleep Disordered BreathingThe hypothesis for this study is that children with sleep disordered breathing will benefit from treatment with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) or Bi-level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) in terms of reduction in cardiovascular risk markers and insulin resistance. The CPAP machine delivers a predetermined level of pressure. It releases a stream of compressed air through a hose to the nose mask and keeps the upper airway open under continuous air pressure. This air pressure prevents obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs as a result of narrowing of the airway due to the relaxation of upper respiratory tract muscles during sleep. This machine helps to increase the oxygen flow by keeping the airway open. The BiPAP machine delivers two levels of pressure. Inspiratory Positive Airway Pressure (IPAP) is a high amount of pressure, applied when the patient inhales and a low Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure (EPAP) during exhalation.

Neuroregulation of BreathingDue to recent technological improvements, it is now possible to record the electrical activity of the diaphragm (Eadi), a direct expression of the central nervous system respiratory center activity. By providing a relatively easy-to-use technique to record Eadi the NAVA (Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist) technology offers a new opportunity to explore the effects of various interventions on neural inspiratory activity in human subjects during spontaneous and assisted ventilation both for normal and simulated abnormal respiratory mechanics. The main aim of this project is to measure and compare the components of Eadi signal, the direct reflect of the respiratory centers activity, under various conditions of normal and simulated altered respiratory mechanics (either obstructive or restrictive respiratory mechanics° in order to better understand the neuroregulation of breathing. The second aim of the present project is to perform a similar analysis regarding the effects of various modes (Pressure Support and NAVA) and various levels of assisted ventilation both in case of normal and abnormal respiratory mechanics. Based on the information recorded on Eadi and flow and pressure signals, the last aim of this project is to correlate Eadi and pneumatic derived parameters both during spontaneous breathing and assisted ventilation. Practically, by using the NAVA recording technology, the investigators will perform a physiological study on normal volunteers to explore the effects of normal and simulated abnormal respiratory mechanics on Eadi, flow and pressure signals (airway, oesophageal and transdiaphragmatic pressures) in order to better understand the neuroregulation of breathing. Thirty healthy volunteers with documented normal lung function tests will be included in the study (obstructive respiratory mechanics will be simulated in 15 healthy volunteers and respiratory mechanics will be simulated in 15 healthy volunteers).

COPD AsthmaAim: This study was conducted to determine the effect of progressive muscle relaxation and breathing exercise on sleep quality and exercise self-efficacy in chronic obstructive pulmonary patients. Methods: This study was conducted as a randomized controlled experimental study. The study was conducted with 64 chronic obstructive pulmonary patients, where 36 of them were in the intervention group and 34 in the control group. Data of the study were collected using the descriptive information form, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Exercise Self-Regulatory Efficacy Scale (Ex-SRES) for patients with COPD. Results: When the total scores pertaining to the sleep quality index and exercise self-efficacy of the individuals in the intervention and control groups were compared, it was found that there were statistically significant differences in the intervention group compared to the control group (p < 0.05).
