Resistance Exercise Training at Different Intensities
SarcopeniaFrailty1 moreThe aim of the current study, therefore, is to determine the feasibility of recruitment and adherence to resistance exercise training interventions performed at low and high loads, to volitional muscular failure, in a trial population that includes both healthy and frail older people.
Trial of Nicotinamide Riboside and Co-enzyme Q10 in Chronic Kidney Disease
Chronic Kidney DiseaseSarcopenia1 moreChronic kidney disease is associated with the loss of skeletal muscle mass and function. This process detrimentally impacts mobility, functional independence, and quality of life. Mounting evidence suggests that chronic kidney disease impairs skeletal muscle functioning by injuring mitochondria, the central energy producing units of cells. Potential treatment options to restore mitochondrial function include aerobic and weight bearing exercise and medications that directly improve mitochondrial energetics. Unfortunately, exercise programs may be difficult to implement in people who have chronic diseases, such as kidney disease.. Coenzyme Q10 (coQ10) and nicotinamide riboside (NR) are naturally occurring supplements that can directly improve mitochondrial efficiency. Both compounds help mitochondria produce more energy while generating less waste. The primary purpose of this study is to test whether coQ10 and NR can improve muscle function among people with chronic kidney disease. What we learn in this study may help us better understand the mechanisms of skeletal muscle impairment among people with kidney disease and ultimately improve their ability to be active and independent.
A Prospective Study Frailty for Esophagectomy and Lung Resection in Thoracic Surgery
ThoracicThoracic Neoplasm7 moreThe purpose of this study is to develop an all-encompassing frailty model using laboratory and functional studies. A frailty model will help us determine prior to surgery who will require rehabilitation and skilled nursing needs beyond discharge. This model will also help us determine who will likely be readmitted and why they will be readmitted. Understanding these things can help us prevent some of them from occurring in the future.
A Protein Supplementation and Exercise Strategy to Promote Muscle Protein Anabolism in Frail Elderly...
SarcopeniaThe present study is designed to investigate whether timed protein supplementation will increase skeletal muscle mass in the frail elderly population.
Prevalence and Associated Factors of Sarcopenia Among Elderly Patients in Osteoporosis Clinic
SarcopeniaOsteoporosisThis was a cross-sectional study. Patients who attended the osteoporosis clinic of Kowloon Hospital from June to December 2022 were recruited. Grip strength and appendicular skeletal muscle mass index were measured with a Jamar dynamometer and a bioimpedance analyser. Since most patients in our clinic are of Chinese ethnicity, the diagnostic criteria in the Consensus Update on Sarcopenia Diagnosis and Treatment by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia in 2019 was utilised. The diagnosis of sarcopenia was established by the presence of both low grip strength (Male: < 28 kg, Female < 18 kg) and low appendicular skeletal mass (Male: < 7.0 kg/m2, Female: < 5.7 kg/m2)
Immunophenotype of Risk in Older Patients Admitted for Pneumonia
Age Associated Immune DeficiencyElderly Infection4 moreThe objective is to evaluate if the immune risk phenotype (IRP) in patients who have been admitted for pneumonia predisposes to worse long-term outcomes. In addition, the association between the detected immunological alterations and clinical, functional, nutritional or comorbidity risk factors will be evaluated. If the hypothesis is confirmed, helpful immunological markers will be identified. This will be useful in clinical practice to identify patients who can benefit from an intervention and / or to identify the best time for vaccination. Otherwise, valuable information will be obtained on the interrelation between immunological, clinical, functional and nutritional aspects.
Imaging Biomarkers of the Effects of a Mixed Exercise Program
SarcopeniaThe aim is quantify, correlate and establish the diagnostic and prognostic value of the variation of the image biomarkers obtained by magnetic resonance (muscle volume, morphological, biochemical and structural biomarkers) longitudinally in fragile or pre-frail elders with sarcopenia after a mixed physical training of strength and myofascial self-conditioning. This project is based on an, longitudinal, prospective, controlled, randomized, intervention study and blind for the researchers responsible for the study. 60 elderly with sarcopenia and frailty (Intervention Group, n=30; Control Group, n=30) will participate in the study. Intervention Group participants will perform 6-months mixed exercise program consisting in high-intensity strength training and self-myofascial conditioning. Data will be take trough 2 measurements that will be take place at baseline and post-intervention. Criteria of frailty, criteria of sarcopenia, sociodemographic, clinics, kinanthropometric, functional, nutritional and confusing variables will be evaluated. Moreover, magnetic resonance images will be performed to obtain muscle volume, morphological, biochemical and structural biomarkers.
Muscle Loss and Fatigue as a Consequence of Radiotherapy
Breast CancerFatigue1 moreThis study examines the extent of systemic muscle loss and the degree of fatigue experienced by breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. This study seeks to identify whether muscle loss occurs outside the radiation fields and if muscle loss is correlated with the degree of fatigue.
Implementing Resistance Exercise to Reduce Frailty for Older Adult
SarcopeniaTo develop an intervention specifically targeted for these clients who have the frailty syndrome. The Investigators propose to develop an exercise intervention that can reduce frailty in older adults to facilitate their ability to age-in-place. The long-term objective of this work is to develop a package of interventions that can be administered within the existing Medicaid Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver programs. The specific goal of this proposal is to develop a resistance exercise intervention to reduce frailty in older adults receiving long term care services in their home through the Illinois Community Care Program, a HCBS Waiver Program.
Citrulline Supplementation Combined With Exercise: Effect on Muscle Function in Elderly People (CITEX...
SarcopeniaObesityThe main objective of this study is to determine if oral supplementation of Citrulline, when combined with HIIT, can produce significant changes in body composition, muscle quality, muscle metabolism and functional capacity in older obese men and women . The investigators hypothesize that Citrulline combined with HIIT will be more beneficial than HIIT alone which will be more beneficial than citrulline alone which will be more beneficial than placebo alone in obese elderly men and women .
