Estimation of Muscle Mass in Older Adults Using Deuterated Creatine
SarcopeniaCurrent methods for the quantification of muscle mass are indirect, lack precision, and often rely on expensive equipment that only provides limited (indirect) data on whole body muscle mass. Dual energy X ray absorptiometry has emerged as a potential precise measure of lean mass, easy to use in clinical practice and research. However, it assesses an indirect measurement of total-body skeletal muscle mass and its clinical use for determination of changes in muscle mass may be very limited due to instrumentation availability, particularly in field studies, and cost. Moreover, these methods provide estimates of fat free mass that is not skeletal muscle specific, and are influenced by changes in regional or total body water content. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has developed a novel technique using deuterium labeled creatine dilution for the estimation of muscle mass and has begun clinical evaluation of this muscle-measure in healthy young and older adults.

Vitamin D and Physical Activity for Prevention of Sarcopenia in Osteoporosis
SarcopeniaIn the present study the aim was to determine the prevalence of sarcopenia and to evaluate the effectiveness of an exercise program and vitamin D supplementation in enhancing muscle mass and strength in community-dwelling older adults with osteopenia /osteoporosis. One hundred and forty-five individuals aged 65 years and above with documented osteopenia/osteoporosis were scanned for sarcopenia. The participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups: Group 1-PA and vitamin D (n= 38), Group 2-PA(n=36), Group 3-vitamin D (n= 36) or Group 4-healthy lifestyle(n =35) for 16 weeks. The PA group received a 60-minute 3-day/week exercise programme, the vitamin D group received oral cholecalciferol 2000 IU/day and the control group was provided with health education using videotaped presentations, physician talks on topics concerning bone and muscle health. Body composition was measured DEXA. Vitamin D levels were measured and PA was measured using the Baecke Physical Activity Questionnaire. Physical performance was assessed using upper limb grip strength, walking speed and knee extension strength. All data was collected at baseline and at 4 months.
Resistance Exercise Effect on Physical Performance and Functional Status in Sarcopenic Older Women...
SarcopeniaAging is characterized by a progressive loss of multiple physical and cognitive abilities. From these changes, the most important one is the loss of muscle mass, which has been called "sarcopenia". Resistance exercise is a therapeutic approach for sarcopenia, nevertheless there is no universal consensus. Therefore, this research is interested in determining the effect of a resistance exercise program on physical performance and/or functional status in sarcopenic older women. The main study hypothesis is that a program of resistance exercise will improve physical performance and functional status in sarcopenic older women compared against general recommendations. This is a single-blind, controlled clinical trial, including women> 70 years, living in the community with sarcopenia. Those who agree to participate, will be randomly assigned to one of the following groups: Resistance Exercise Group General Recommendations Group (control) The study will last 24 weeks, with 4 measurements performed at baseline, week 6, 12 and 24. Multilevel models (random effects) will be constructed for the comparison between the two groups. Tests will be conducted with a P=0.05 and confidence intervals at 95%. This protocol has been approved by the local ethics committee.

A Randomized-Control Study of Gym Tonic's Community Based Strength Training Intervention.
FrailtyMuscle Loss1 moreLaunched in April 2015 , Gym Tonic is the first of its kind cross-border exercise-as-medicine partnership between research institutions, business enterprises and service providers from Singapore and Finland. What sets Gym Tonic apart from other exercise programmes is its singular focus on strength training, necessary for frailty prevention and maintenance of functional independence for the elderly. This randomized-control trial is to validate the Gym Tonic programme and data as well measuring its effectiveness in improving physical functions and reversing frailty.
