Multicomponent Intervention in Women at Risk of Sarcopenia

The main question it aims to answer are: What is the effect of a multi-component intervention in women at risk of sarcopenia? Participants will twelve women between 55 and 75 years old with risk of sarcopenia, who agreed through written informed consent for participate 12 weeks with 24 sessions included dancing, resistance exercises, and nutritional education. The outcomes were muscle mass, grip strength, gait speed and body composition. The effects were measured before and after the intervention, under a self-controlled design.
Culinary Medicine to Enhance Protein Intake on Muscle Quality in Older Adults
SarcopeniaAging is associated with a decline in muscle mass, strength, and physical function, leading to muscle mass loss and weakness. These concerns can impact an individual's functional independence and quality of life (QOL). Dietary protein stimulates muscle protein growth. Current studies suggest that optimal protein intake for older adults is greater than the Recommended Dietary Allowance. Barriers to consuming protein-rich foods in older adults include reductions in taste and smell, dentition, dexterity, and changes in living situation. Therefore, nutritional interventions are needed to effectively improve eating behaviors, diet quality, and stimulate muscle growth and strength. These interventions will help prevent, manage, and promote muscle mass loss recovery. Older adults may not be aware of their changing nutrient needs and therefore may lack the skills to prepare nutritionally adequate foods properly. Cooking demonstrations, or culinary medicine (CM), can help teach healthy cooking to reduce potential red meat consumption barriers and improve community-dwelling older adults' dietary habits. Thus, CM can be a novel strategy to improve diet quality in older adults and promote and augment at-home cooking. CM is an evidenced-base field that combines skills of preparing, cooking, and presenting food with the science of medicine. This field can help to accomplish potential eating behaviors and health outcome improvements. A tailored CM program can be an effective strategy that could reduce barriers in protein intake that will enable older adults to age well and productively.
Olive Oil Polyphenols, Vitamin D, Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Locomotor Function (PolivD3)
OsteopeniaSarcopeniaThe present project hypothesizes that the potential protective effect of olive oil relies on its polyphenols profile (quality and quantity) and that it may be synergistic to other food components. Among the nutrients that may be of interest for bone and muscle tissues, unsaturated fatty acids and vitamins are the most described. Consequently, based on the promising available preliminary data, the present project aims to investigate the possible preventive effect of olive oil polyphenols and eventually the synergistic effects of fatty acids and vitamin D on bone, muscle and adipose tissue, in order to prevent any locomotor dysfunction. Volunteers will be supplemented during 9 months. The primary and secondary outcome measures will be performed at baseline, 3 and 9 months.
Effect of Creatine Supplementation and Exercise on Bone Health
OsteoporosisSarcopeniaOsteoporosis is an important health problem, costing the Canadian health care system over $2 billion per year. Loss of bone mineral and bone fragility is especially prevalent in postmenopausal women. Of all osteoporotic fractures, hip fractures are the most traumatic. Creatine monohydrate is a nutritional supplement that is often combined with strength training to increase strength and muscle mass. The investigators recently completed a pilot study in a small number of postmenopausal women (n=33) that showed that creatine monohydrate significantly improved hip bone mineral density during a 1-year resistance training program. In our current proposal the investigators want to determine whether creatine combined with strength training can have an even larger effect on bone mineral density at the hip if given over 2 years in a large group of postmenopausal women (n=240). The investigators also want to determine whether this leads to reduced fractures in these women for up to a year after completing the creatine and strength training program.
Impact of Fat Co-ingestion With Protein on the Post-prandial Anabolic Response in Elderly Men
SarcopeniaRationale: The progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass with aging, or sarcopenia, has a major impact on our healthcare system due to increased morbidity and greater need for hospitalization and/or institutionalization. One way to prevent skeletal muscle loss is to improve dietary intake of the elderly. It has already been shown that ingestion of dietary protein stimulates muscle protein synthesis and inhibits muscle protein breakdown, resulting in an overall positive net protein balance. However, the impact of fat (as part of the meal) on dietary protein-induced muscle protein synthesis remains largely unknown. Based on previous studies by other research groups, we hypothesize that fat further stimulates the muscle anabolic response to protein ingestion. Objective: The primary objective of this study is to investigate the effect of a single meal-like amount of protein with or without fat on postprandial muscle protein synthesis rates in healthy elderly men. Furthermore, as a secondary objective, we will assess digestion and absorption kinetics. Study design: double-blind randomized intervention study Study population: 24 healthy elderly men (55-85 y) Intervention: one group (n=12) will consume a test beverage of 350 mL containing 20 g of intrinsically labeled casein, and the other group (n=12) will consume a beverage of the same volume containing 20 g of casein plus 20 g of fat. Main study parameters/endpoints: Primary endpoint: muscle protein synthesis rates. Secondary endpoint: digestion and absorption kinetics.
