Electrophysiology and Blood Flow in Patients With Schizophrenia and Their Siblings

HealthySchizophrenia

This study will explore how the brain works during memory testing in an effort to understand why some patients with schizophrenia have memory difficulties. Patients with schizophrenia and their unaffected family members are eligible for this study. Studying family members may help identify the genes related to the memory deficit in schizophrenia. Normal volunteers will also be studied. Normal volunteers, patients with schizophrenia, and their family members interested in participating in this study will be screened with a complete medical examination and psychiatric assessment, and performance of simple tasks. Study participants will be shown numbers on a screen and asked to recall them after a brief period. This will be done during electroencephalographic (EEG) recording, in which electrodes attached to the scalp measure the brain s electrical activity. The same test will be repeated while the patient has magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. The combined MRI and EEG testing will permit better localization of the brain s electrical activity. ...

Waist Circumference Measurements in Schizophrenic Patients

Waist Circumference MeasurementsSchizophrenia1 more

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome(MS) among pt's with schizophrenia has been reported to be high, ranging from 24 to 43% in males and 27 to 52% in females. Schizophrenic patients with MS have an increased incidence of DM, coronary heart disease and increased mortality from cardiovascular diseases. Central adiposity is highly correlated with the presence of hypertension, coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and increased mortality risk. Waist circumference(WC) is a better indicator of abdominal obesity and a better predictor of CVD than either BMI or waist-to-hip ratio. However, currently there is no standard location for the measurement of WC. Objectives: 1. To compare the magnitude of WC measured at 3 sites ( immediately above the iliac crest, midpoint between the lowest rib and the iliac crest , umbilical level) in males and females. 2. To examine the correlation of WC with Triglyceride, cholesterol, HDL, LDL and glucose.

Non-interventional (NI) Study to Observe Efficacy and Usage of Quetiapine in Acute Episodes of Schizophrenia...

Schizophrenia

Observational, non-comparative, epidemiological study to collect and analyse real life data on schizophrenic patients receiving quetiapine according to the standard medical practice in Croatia. The main objectives are to assess after 6 months of quetiapine therapy severity of illness and global improvement in patients using Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scale.

Prospective Studies of the Pathogenesis of Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia

The purpose of this study is to use structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study children at high risk for schizophrenia. It is hypothesized that children at high risk for schizophrenia will have abnormalities of brain development, especially of the cerebral cortex. The study will also describe normal brain development in children from birth to age 6 years

Direct Measurements of Cardiometabolic Risk in Treated Schizophrenia Patients

SchizophreniaCardiovascular Disease

Participants will be asked to do the following: A screening session in which you will take part in a diagnostic interview that will take about 2-3 hours to complete and will address your medical history. If you've recently participated in one of Dr. Haupt's or Dr. Newcomer's studies (HRPO #03-1281, 01-0134, or 04-0191) you may not have to complete this screening interview. An ultrasound test of your heart and blood vessels where an ultrasound machine will use sound waves to create images that allow the main blood vessels in your neck to be examined. You will be lying down for the procedure, and a colorless gel will be applied to the side of your neck where the handheld probe (called a transducer) will be placed. The transducer will then be gently moved over each side of your neck. This procedure will take approximately 30 minutes. A magnetic resonance image (MRI) study where the amount of fat in your liver will be measured. The MRI involves having your body painlessly scanned inside a tubular machine, while lying on a table for about 45 minutes. Some routine blood tests to assess glucose (sugar) and lipid (fat) control and liver function, as well as an additional hepatitis screen if you have a history of hepatitis. You will go to the Intensive Research Unit (IRU) or Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) after an 8 to 10-hour overnight fast (except water). Approximately 42 ml (3 tablespoons) of blood will be obtained from you, and you will also have your height, weight, blood pressure, and waist and hip measurements taken. This will take approximately one hour. A dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan to measure your body fat and body muscle content. The DEXA scan involves lying on a table in a private room wearing a hospital gown for about 15 minutes while a machine silently measures the amount of fat in your body. The DEXA scan is part of the research study and gives the researcher a picture of how much fat is in your body.

Qualitative Analysis on the Experiences of Employment Among Schizophrenic Patients

Schizophrenia

The aim of this search is to realize the subjective experiences of employment among schizophrenic patients by qualitative analysis. We plan to recruit 50 people diagnosed with schizophrenia and divide into two groups, employment and unemployment. Every subjects will complete the demographic data, the evaluation of severity of disease, the record of medication and an intensive interview about their employment experiences. Finally, we will analysis the thick descriptions to understand how schizophrenic patients interpret their employment experiences and which factors will affect their successful employment.

Treatment Response in Schizophrenia: Bridging Imaging and Postmortem Studies

Schizophrenia

The overarching goal is to identify imaging markers that will predict treatment response, and to confirm or validate these biomarkers using anatomical studies of postmortem tissue. Early detection of drug response would yield specific treatment strategies that are tailored to the individual, thus improving both the quality of life of the patients and drastically reducing the costs associated with unsuccessful treatment strategies.
