Use of Wearable Devices to Assess the Impact of Stress in Workers' Life Quality

Stress DisorderBurnout4 more

Introduction: Work stress has become more and more important in the last years as it affects both health and productivity of workers. In the last years, different wearables devices have started to be used to monitor stress at work to understand their consequences on daily life activity and sleep quality. Objective: to establish whether wearable wristbands are devices capable of determining the work stress level of workers from a research center in Galicia, for which different variables related to the work stress level and quality of life of these workers will be evaluated. Methods and analysis: The only inclusion criterion is to be a worker from a research center from Galicia. As for exclusion criteria, will not be allowed to participate those workers who are close to retirement ( <5 years), have health issues that hinder participation in the study, or present skin hypersensitivity or allergic reactions due to the materials the wristbands are made. This is a pilot study to determine the viability, sample size, cost, and duration of the study. This is an observational, analytic, and longitudinal study. In other words, in this study different variables from the population of interest will be observed and recorded without any direct intervention, so as to establish causality associations between these variables. It is considered as longitudinal since a six-months tracking of the variables will be performed. As for the statistical analysis, different tests will be performed to analyse the distribution, correlation, and association of the different features, as well as the significant differences between them at different points of the study (detailed below).

Sleep Disorders Prior to and During a Course of Radiotherapy for Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer Female

The main goal of the study is to evaluate sleep disorders in breast cancer patients prior to and during a course of radiotherapy in terms of severity of sleep disorders, distress for the patients and use of sleeping drugs, in order to evaluate the potential effect of habituation to radiotherapy during the course of treatment and generate hypotheses thereof. The patients will be asked to complete a questionnaire prior to radiotherapy, after 5 and 15 fractions of radiotherapy, and at the end of radiotherapy. The questionnaire includes questions regarding symptoms, distress, sleep disorders and sleeping drugs. In addition, a questionnaire regarding the use of smartphones / tablets will be completed prior to radiotherapy. Forty-eight patients with documented start of radiotherapy and with a documented completed questionnaire at baseline and at least one completed questionnaire after start of radiotherapy should be subjected to statistical analysis. Assuming that 5% of patients do not fulfil these requirements, a total of 51 patients should be enrolled to this study.

Shift Work, Heredity, Insulin, and Food Timing Study

Shift Work Type Circadian Rhythm Sleep DisorderDiabetes Mellitus4 more

The purpose of this study is to determine whether night time eating that coincides with elevated endogenous melatonin impairs glucose tolerance, particularly in carriers of the MTNR1B risk allele.

Shift Work and Risk of Cardio-vascular Disease

Shift-Work Sleep Disorder

The purpose of this research is to test the hypothesis that those with non-traditional work schedules (e.g. shift workers) have a higher cardio-metabolic risk than those with traditional work schedules (e.g. day workers), and that both accumulated sleep debt and the degree of circadian disruption predict the elevated cardio-metabolic risk. The findings of this research are expected to increase our understanding of physiologic tolerance to non-traditional work schedules and provide the basis for the development of methods for the early detection of adverse health effects and determine coping strategies for the millions of workers with non-traditional work schedules.

Sleep, Cognition and Memory Disorder

Sleep ArchitectureSleep Disorders1 more

The increasing incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related sleep-disorders with the aging of the population is a major issue of public health. The prevalence of sleep disturbances is about 50% in dementia patients. Sleep in dementia is mainly characterized by prolonged night-time awakenings, sometimes with longer sleep latency and/or early awakening. The presence of these sleep disturbances is the main reason for the institutionalization of AD patients, as well as a major cause of the deterioration of the caregivers' sleep. The MEMENTO cohort is composed of patients with isolated memory complaints or mild cognitive impairment, at high risk to develop dementia. All voluntary patients from the CMRR (Center of Memory, resources and Research) of Bordeaux (MEMENTO cohort) will be tested at inclusion and followed-up 1 year later. For these two evaluations, actigraphic monitoring at home, 2-night polysomnography (PSG) monitoring at hospital including a 24-hour period of urinary melatonin dosage, neuropsychological tests battery, a virtual reality tool and questionnaires will be used.

Cardiometabolic Risk of Shiftwork

Sleep DeprivationCircadian Dysregulation1 more

The overall goal of the present application is to test the hypothesis that shift workers, who are chronically exposed to circadian misalignment and sleep loss, have a higher cardio-metabolic risk than day workers, and that the accumulated sleep debt and the degree of circadian misalignment both predict their elevated cardio-metabolic risk.

Theory Based SMS Reminders - Text's Impact on Patient Attendance

Otorhinolaryngologic DiseasesSleep Disorders1 more

The project will be done at the ear, nose and throat outpatient department at Lovisenberg Diakonale Hospital (LDS) in 2015-2016. About 12% of patients with appointments at the surgical outpatient clinic at LDS do not attend their appointment even after receiving both letters and shot message service (SMS) reminders. Persuasion theory suggests that the SMS reminders may be more effective if the text appeals more to the patient's feelings. The project is designed as a randomized controlled trial in which the control group receives the standard text that has neutral content and the intervention group receives a more emotion-based SMS reminder. The aim is to determine whether the more emotional text reduces the proportion of patients who do not show up for their scheduled appointment at the surgical outpatient clinic.

Pressure Algometry Evaluation of Two Occlusal Splint Designs in Bruxism Management - RCT

BruxismSleep Disorder

During the study, designated pressure points before and after one month of splint usage will be evaluated as possible indicators of two different splints efficacy.. Two study groups will be formed. The study will be conducted on patients reporting to the Dental Prosthetics Outpatient Clinic of PUM in Szczecin, Poland. Patients aged 18-65 years with probable bruxism, yet requiring splint therapy will be included in the study.
