Pain Relief After Hiatal Hernia Repair Surgery

Shoulder PainHiatal Hernia

Referred shoulder pain (pain felt when the problem is actually in a different location) is very common after laparoscopic (small, narrow cut) hernia surgery. The purpose of this study is to look at the effect of a simple back massager, which can be readily purchased online or in a store, in addition to the use of standard pain medications.

Quantification of Upper Trapezius Muscle Stiffness Using Supersonic Shear Wave Imaging: Efficacy...

Neck PainShoulder Pain

Objectives: (1) To examine the upper trapezius muscle stiffness using SSI in workers with and without neck/shoulder disorders; and (2) to develop a workplace-based exercise programme to reduce upper trapezius muscle stiffness and to enhance shoulder function and work ability in the working population. Hypotheses to be tested: (1) Workers with neck/shoulder disorders demonstrate increase upper trapezius muscle stiffness when compared to healthy control; and a cutoff value of the upper trapezius stiffness was established for early identification of individuals at risk of having neck/shoulder disorders in the working population; (2) Workplace-based exercise programme can reduce upper trapezius muscle stiffness and enhance shoulder function and work ability in the working population. Design: Part A study: Cross-sectional study; Part B study: randomized controlled trial Subjects: One-hundred office computer workers with or without neck/shoulder pain Study instruments: Supersonic shear wave imaging Main outcome measures: Upper trapezius muscle stiffness, Shoulder Pain and Disability Index (SPADI), Neck Disability Index, Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH), work ability index (WAI). Data analysis: Between-group comparisons to show differences in the outcome measures will be analyzed using Independent t-test. To compare the treatment effects, repeated-measures analysis of variance test (between-group factor: intervention vs control; within-subject factor: time (baseline, 6 week and 1 year)). Expected results: Workers with neck/shoulder disorders demonstrate increase upper trapezius muscle stiffness when compared to healthy control. Workplace-based exercise programme can reduce upper trapezius muscle stiffness and enhance shoulder function and work ability in the working population.

sEmg Biofeedback Training in Individuals With Subacromial Pain Syndrome

Shoulder Pain

Objective: To investigate the effects of EMG biofeedback training on the pattern of scapular muscle activation and kinematics in subjects with subacromial pain syndrome. Methods: This is a randomized controlled trial, which will be composed of 40 volunteers of both genders, aged between 30 and 60 years. All volunteers will undergo pre-assessment (IA): pain sensation, pain and function, shoulder range of motion, muscle strength, electromyographic activity and kinematics of the shoulder complex. After the initial evaluation, the volunteers will be randomly divided into two groups for the intervention: exercises group (GE - conventional exercises with elastic band) and Biofeedback group (BG - Biofeedback training). The intervention protocol will last eight weeks. After four weeks, the second assessment (SA), similar to IA, will be performed and the global change perception questionnaire will be added. At the end of the intervention protocol, the third evaluation (TA), similar to SA, will be performed. A follow-up will be performed 4 weeks after the end of the intervention protocol, with the assessment being equal to TA. Statistical Analysis will be performed through Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software version 20.0 for Windows, following the principles of intention-to-treat analysis. The descriptive analysis will use the mean as a measure of central tendency and the standard deviation as a measure of dispersion. A mixed model ANOVA will be performed for intra and intergroup comparisons.

Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block to Treat Shoulder Pain After Laparoscopic Surgery

Nerve Block

This is a prospective double blinded randomized pilot trial to evaluate the efficacy of phenopalatine ganglion block (SPGB) block to manage shoulder tip pain (STP) after laparoscopic surgery. Patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery will be approached by a member of the research team and those found eligible for participating will be enrolled after signing an informed consent form. Patients will be randomized to have the SPGB block with saline versus active drug which contains 10% lidocaine diluted to 5%. The block will be performed , by an experienced member of the research team, and the patient will then be followed up by the investigator for any adverse events and levels of shoulder pain.

Ultrasound Guided Botulinum Toxin Type A Injection of Subacromial-Subdeltoid Bursa in Hemiplegic...

Subacromial BursitisSubdeltoid Bursitis

Good shoulder function is a prerequisite for effective hand function, as well as for performing multiple tasks involving mobility, ambulation, and activities of daily living (ADL). A common sequela of stroke is hemiplegic shoulder pain, which can hamper functional recovery and subsequently lead to disability. Hemiplegic shoulder pain can begin as early as 2 weeks post stroke but typically occurs within 2-3 months post stroke.

Efficacy of Sodium Thiosulfate in Shoulder Pain in Calcific Tendinitis of the Rotator Cuff

Sodium ThiosulfateCalcific Tendinitis1 more

Calcific tendinitis of the rotator cuff is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain. Ultrasound guided percutaneous lavage (UGPL or barbotage or irrigation) of calcific tendinopathy is indicated when conservative treatments (physiotherapy, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) have failed. Our hypothesis is that lavage followed by intra-calcic injection of STS could fasten the dissolution of the calcific deposit. In view of the short half-life of this molecule the investigators hypothesize that this would happen within the first month after the procedure. Therefore, the investigatorschose to assess our primary objective at 1 month. Few studies have evaluated the short-term radiographic evolution after lavage.

The Use of Ultrasound for Botulinum Toxin Subscapularis Muscle Injection Guidance in Spastic Hemiplegic...

HemiplegiaSpastic

The aim of the study is to describe the efficacy of a new approach to the subscapularis muscle under US guidance for the injection of botulinum toxin in patients that underwent a stroke suffering from hemiplegic shoulder pain. Pain and spastic shoulder are common findings in hemiplegic patients following a stroke. The pain interferes with rehabilitation prolonging hospitalization and is related with decreased quality of life. There is a close relationship between spasticity of the subscapularis muscle and pain The patients show a clinical picture of adduction and internal rotation of the shoulder, elbow and wrist and fingers flexion with a limited external rotation of the shoulder. The investigators suggest that paralyzing the subscapularis muscle with botulinum toxin may alleviate pain in the hemiplegic shoulder. Best produced when injected in a specific area of the muscle where a higher concentration of motor points exists.
