Treatment of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, a Long-term Follow-up

Complex Regional Pain SyndromesChronic Pain

Complex regional pain syndrome, CRPS, is an uncommon but often very disabling chronic pain syndrome characterized by, beside pain: sensory disturbances, peripheral autonomic changes and inflammatory features. The diagnosis is subdivided in CRPS type 1 where no nerve injury has been identified, and CRPS type 2 when a major nerve injury has been verified. A combination of exposure in vivo, a form of behaviour therapy where the patient is gradually confronted with avoided movements and activities, and interventions directly targeting a hypothesized cortical reorganisation is an interesting novel approach for treating CRPS. The present study consists of (1) a qualitative interview study with 10-15 subjects that has received this form of treatment, in order to better understand their experience and effects of the treatment, and (2) a case series with long-term follow-up of 3-5 subjects that received the treatment för 5-8 years ago, in order to study the long term effects of the treatment.

Geriatric Psychiatry and Pharmacovigilance

DementiaDepression3 more

The purpose of this observational multicenter-study is to investigate safety of psychopharmacological treatment and rates of adverse drug reactions in gerontopsychiatric inpatients. Elderly people are at higher risk for developing side effects under pharmacological treatment due to an altered metabolic situation, higher comorbidity rates and often polypharmacy. Furthermore gerontopsychiatric patients can often not articulate their symptoms clearly, for example due to pronounced cognitive impairment. The aim of the study is to gain valid data of possible adverse drug reaction rates, their potential risk factors and outcome, as well as medical prescription practises. To assess these outcomes an intensive pharmacovigilance-monitoring will be conducted at the five participating study sites. At Baseline demographic data, previous and present disorders, use of drugs, previous and present medication, quality of life, cognitive function, physical examination results, laboratory results and ECG will be assessed. Afterwards patients are visited weekly and screened for possible adverse drug reactions. All adverse drug reactions will be coded in the MedDRA-system. In case of a possible serious adverse drug reaction serum levels of all psychotropic substances applicated will be assessed. Drug combinations will be analysed using an established advanced bioinformatic tool (mediQ). Diagnosis, medication intake and possible adverse drug reactions are documented continually. 2 weeks after discharge from the ward, patients will be contacted by phone to assess catamnestic data.

Assessment of SSD in Outpatients by Using SSS-CN

Somatization Disorder

About 70-80% of patients with somatic symptom disorder (SSD) visit the general medical hospital instead of psychiatric or other mental health settings. The current self-reporting questionnaires are neither sufficiently considering companioned anxiety or depression nor validated for monitor the treatment efficacy of such group. The Somatic Symptom Scale-China (SSS-CN) is developed due to the urging clinical demanding in general hospital. The study aims to investigate whether the SSS-CN could serve as a timely and practical instrument to detect SSD and assess the severity of the disorder.

Burning Mouth Disorder (BMD) - A Neuropathic Pain Disorder

Burning Mouth SyndromeTaste Disorder1 more

Oral burning can have a multitude of reasons. Recent neurophysiologic study results suggest that a primary burning mouth disorder (BMD) may be a peripheral and/or a central neuropathic disorder. The aim of this study is to first identify patients with a primary burning mouth disorder by excluding other possible causes for oral burning. By means of qualitative and quantitative sensory testing and a gustatory examination in the individual patient the investigators want to find out whether neurosensory differences exist between patients with a primary BMD and controls and whether gustatory and neurosensory deficits always coexist in BMD-patients.

Effects of Intraoperative Esmolol on Post-mastectomy Pain Syndrome

Post-mastectomy Pain Syndrome

Chronic postoperative pain is an entity that is usually neglected by anesthetists, but several studies show that the choice of anesthetic technique may interfere with this prevalence. Esmolol is a selective beta-blocker of ultra fast duration that has been studied as a perioperative venous adjuvant with antihyperalgesic and opioid sparing action. The investigators ventured the possibility of this anti-hyperalgesic effect attenuating the chronic pain syndrome post-mastectomy.
