Spinal Cord InjuryChronic Pressure UlcersPressure ulcers (PU) are skin breakdowns that often form after blood flow in the skin is reduced from prolonged and repeated exposure to externally applied forces. As many as 85% of individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI) report the occurrence of at least 1 PU since being injured. Despite the increasing attention and emphasis on prevention, PUs still represent a major health risk for persons with SCI. PUs and other skin breakdowns are at risk for becoming infected; it is not uncommon for many different types of "bugs" to be found in the wound. It has been assumed that the presence of these organisms did not impede wound healing or skin graft survival. The current proposal will use a new type of procedure that involves the direct injection of an antibiotic (in saline) into the skin beneath the wound; it is then distributed throughout the wound using a second device that uses sound waves. The study will determine if the antibiotic treatment and the standard of care improves the rate wound closure compared to the standard of care alone in persons with SCI and a chronic pelvic-region PU.
Nutrition Education for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal Cord InjuryThis is a randomized controlled trial to study a nutrition education intervention in individuals with spinal cord injuries both in the acute rehabilitation setting (n = 100) and the community setting (n = 100). Participants in the treatment group will receive six interactive nutrition lectures based upon a successful program that has been used in older adults titled "Eat Smart, Stay Well". The goals of intervention are to improve whole-grain, fruit and vegetable, and low-fat dairy intake and reduce fat and saturated fat intake. Secondary outcomes will include improvements in waist circumference of body mass index and some biomarkers such as cholesterol and blood sugar.

Intermittent Hypoxia to Enhance Motor Function After Spinal Cord Injury
Spinal Cord InjuriesThis study will examine if acute intermittent hypoxia (brief episodes of breathing lower oxygen), which has been shown to enhance plasticity and motor output, can enhance functional outcomes and muscle activation in individuals with spinal cord injury. Our aim is to assess breathing, sitting, standing and walking functional ability before and after acute intermittent hypoxia, compared to a sham treatment. This information may be useful in advancing rehabilitation for people with spinal cord injuries.
Effects of 6 Weeks High-intensity Interval Training Among Spinal Cord Injury
INCOMPLETE SPINAL CORD INJURY (ASIA D)The training consists of 6 weeks of functional electrical stimulation leg cycling exercise (FES-LCE) program. The training program comprises of 2 visits per week. Each visit consists of FES-LCE for 45 minutes. Throughout the 6 weeks program, there will be testing/assessment sessions on week 1, week 3 and week 6. The FES will be applied via surface electrodes and the stimulation intensity based on the participant's tolerance level.

Spinal Cord Injury Vocational Integration Program (SCI-VIP)
Spinal Cord InjuriesThis study involves research about how to help Veterans with spinal cord injury (SCI) gain employment. During the first couple of years following SCI, many people are concentrating on their rehabilitation and are unable to afford the time for return to work. However, studies have shown people often regain the necessary strength and function about two years after SCI to resume activities of daily living very similar to what they experienced prior to the SCI. Even though many social and legal efforts have been made in the last decade to improve chances for people with disabilities to return to work, Veterans with SCI are sometimes hindered in finding employment because of age, past work history, and many other factors. Other Veterans with SCI are very successful at finding employment either working for themselves or working for a company. The investigators know very little about what issues Veterans with SCI face when they attempt to find employment after SCI. The study will analyze both quantitative and qualitative measures to maximize its findings.
