Computerized Based Analysis for Detection and Severity Assessment of Stuttering

Stuttering

In the light of previous attempts to design and develop automated and objective measures for automatic speech recognition system that detects disfluent speech and assess its severity, yet fully automated measurement of stuttered speech is not available. This study was triggered by the need to design and develop a simple and reliable computerized tool for identification of stuttering and measurement for its severity. Therefore, the aim of this study is to develop a user interface that can work on windows system for the adopted stuttering recognition model which can be used in clinical practice by physicians and therapists.

Pilot: Group Therapy for Children Who Stammer

Stammering

The aim of the study is to answer the question: Is a large-scale research study of the effectiveness of group speech and language therapy (SALT) for young people who stammer possible? The study will look at the issues involved in setting up a large-scale investigation of treatment for young people who stammer. It will inform the investigators whether larger studies would be possible and give some early-stage information on the effectiveness of group SALT for these young people. The findings will pave the way for building and testing out treatment programmes where there will be clear positive benefit for young people who stammer and their families. To answer the research question, the study will tell the investigators (a) how easy/difficult it was to get people to take part, (b) young people and parents'/carers' views on taking part and (c) whether the assessments were able to pick up changes in speech and attitudes towards stammering reported by the young people and their carers. Sufficient numbers of participants were not recruited to carry out the intended rehearsal pilot RCT study design.

The Classroom Communication Resource (CCR) Intervention to Change Grade 7 Peer's Attitudes Towards...

Stuttering in AdolescenceBullying of Child

Children who stutter (CWS) are at high risk of being teased and bullied in primary school because of the negative peer attitudes and perceptions towards stuttering. Their experiences can lead to long-term negative psychosocial consequences which can in turn affect academic performance. There is little evidence to determine if classroom-based interventions are effective in changing peer attitudes to stuttering. This study is designed to assess whether a classroom-based CCR intervention versus usual practice in schools will lead to positive shift in attitudes about stuttering at 6-months among grade 7 students.
