Mindful Self Compassion for Combat Deployed Veterans With Moral Injury and Co-occurring PTSD-SUD...

Substance Use DisorderPost-traumatic Stress Disorder1 more

Veterans with co-occurring Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Substance Use Disorder (PTSD-SUD) experience more severe symptomatology and poorer response to existing treatments than Veterans with either disorder alone. Guilt is a common posttraumatic reaction and has been implicated as a risk factor for the development and maintenance of PTSD and substance use. Combat Veterans often report experiencing moral injury defined as perpetrating, failing to prevent, or witnessing acts that violate the values they live by in their civilian lives, which can lead to feelings of guilt and shame. Accordingly, reduction in guilt and increase in self-compassion may lead to improved quality of life for Veterans. This project will conduct a pilot study to evaluate changes in self-compassion, guilt, and PTSD-SUD symptom severity in a sample of Veterans after receiving 8 sessions of Mindful Self Compassion treatment (via a telehealth modality during COVID-19 pandemic). Findings will have significant impact on effective treatment options and lead to improvements in Veterans' quality of life and posttraumatic symptoms.

Behavioral Activation for Heroin Use in China: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Substance-Related DisordersMood Disorders2 more

This was a single-site two-arm parallel-group trial conducted in a Methadone Maintenance Treatment (MMT) Clinic that provides medication service for 254 heroin users in Wuhan, China. Once consented and completed the pre-treatment assessment, participants were randomized to receive either the Chinese translated behavioral activation treatment for substance use (C-BA) or treatment as usual (TAU). Research assessments occurred at pre-treatment, post-treatment, and 1- and 3-months follow-ups. The primary purpose of this study is to: 1. Evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of the Chinese-translated behavioral activation treatment for substance use (C-BA), an evidence based intervention developed to address the individual and psychological needs of Chinese substance users. The secondary purpose of this study is to: Examine the underlying mechanism of C-BA by studying the relationship between change in substance use related outcomes and associated psychological constructs (e.g. levels of behavioral activation and depression).

Intranasal Oxytocin Effects in Alcohol Withdrawal and Dependence; Follow-up Study

AlcoholismSubstance-Related Disorders

This study is an assessment of the long-term effect of oxytocin nasal spray on alcohol withdrawal and dependence in adults admitted for detoxification of alcohol after 60 days and 1 year. It is a follow-up study of a placebo-controlled randomized controlled study where subjects used oxytocin nasal spray during acute withdrawal and the following 4 weeks in an outpatient setting. Half of the participants have received oxytocin nasal spray, the other half placebo nasal spray (NCT02903251). (added March 2019: 24 patients were available for 1-year follow-up)

Targeting Self-regulatory Deficits Through Cognitive Remediation Intervention

Drug Use Disorders

We are proposing a small randomized clinical trial in which 100 substance users will complete the existing Psychotherapy Development Center (PDC) pretreatment assessment battery as well as a novel battery of assays to evaluate cognitive-affective functioning. After completing pretreatment assessments, participants will be randomized to either a (1) cognitive remediation program (training tasks) specifically designed to address cognitive-affective dysregulation or (2) control tasks (verbal fluency tasks). Tasks will be completed twice per week for 4 weeks, after which assessment batteries will be repeated. Finally, we will evaluate real-world behavior and the durability of the training via a one-month follow-up, which will include assessment of substance use as well as the cognitive-affective battery.

Importance of Drug User Detection

Drug Addiction

Identify the illicit drugs (morphine, cannabinoids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, tramadol, cocaine, amphetamine, alcohol, synthetic cannabinoids). Identify illicit drug users in patients who admitted in Assiut University Hospitals undergoing emergency operation and their percent among all patients admitted for emergency operation, for proper selection of anaesthetic agents and proper care before, during and after operations. Compare between addict and non addict in using suitable anaesthetic agents and doses - period of anaesthesia- period of recovery- complications. Compare between addict and non addict patients in :( vital signs before, during and after operation by using anaesthetic chart). Identify the importance of using drug abuse detection as a routine lab work before urgent operations.
